Trouble trying to copy Ayumi Hamasaki DVD

I think I may have come across a DVD using the bad sector protection. When using AnyDVD (the latest version) I get a CRC error (cyclic redundancy check). No ripping/copying software can seem to clone it. It is odd that the disc is over 2 hours long, and yet, the whole thing is 4.18 GB. I've seen somewhere that the Ring protection with bad sectors is probably not compatible on dual layer discs, so that would seem to make sense. According to the auction site on ebay (where I bought it) the disc is region code free. The dvd was shipped to me from China. So far, I've managed to rip all VTS files except for VTS_1_3.vob. I came close a couple times, but it never makes it all the way through the copy. I'm wondering if the new release of AnyDVD 3.9.2.1 is able to handle this new protection, or if there are any future plans to update it to handle this new copy protection technique? I love Any DVD and CloneDVD2. For archiving backups, there is no better software. Thanks in advance for any input.

This sounds more like it is just simply a faulty DVD. Have you tried actually playing it on your PC all the way through? I'll bet it would freeze at the same point. Send it back for a replacement.

Well, that's what I thought at first, but on the stand alone dvd player and if played on the PC with Power DVD, it goes all the way through with no problems. If the disc was damaged, then I would assume that it would freeze at the point that was presumably damaged.

why not used alcohol or such like to copy the DVD with ignore read errors, then burn the disc image and see if the movie is complete and plays fine.

Good idea, or try DVDDecrypter as it can also get passed bad sectors with the right settings. Get it here

When a DVD is damaged I don't think even God himself can get it to copy the damaged file. I had such a disk with the cycle redundancy check error and tried everything, including DVDDecrypter with over 1000 retries, just wouldn't go.
Even tried ignore and that didn't help. I suppose there are just some things in life that won't go the way we want them to.

Re: Trouble trying to copy Ayumi Hamasaki DVD

Not sure if you guys have seen this, but it is in this forum. Sounds like this may be what I have com across....
http://www.cdfreaks.com/news2.php?ID=9833
Being that the total size of the disc is 4.18 GB, the part about this new copy protection not working on a dual layer disc would make sense, since I ran a DVDInfo app on it and verified that it is a single layer format. I'm not sure if the newest version of AnyDVD has been updated for this new protection, but according to Olli there was a beta version in the works that was written to get around it. I wonder if there is a way to get a copy of that beta version....
Also, it's strange that even though this is a commercial DVD, it has no CSS encryption to protect it's content, and the only thing it seems to have to copy protect it is that one area of bad sectors. I would seem to me that the recording company would use SOME form of copy protection, and perhaps this is the route they went instead of the traditional CSS.
