AnyDVD Discuss, Stranger Than Fiction has 99 VTS at Copy Movie forum; Just a heads up on this title. I was able to make a backup using AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 using the DVD-5 Quality setting (if you use the DVD-9 setting Nero Recode reports the main title is uncompressible) and ripping to the Hard Disk then burned with Nero Recode.

Stranger Than Fiction has 99 VTS

Just a heads up on this title.

I was able to make a backup using AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 using the DVD-5 Quality setting (if you use the DVD-9 setting Nero Recode reports the main title is uncompressible) and ripping to the Hard Disk then burned with Nero Recode.

Yes I know I could have just burned it from CloneDVD2 but when I make a backup I also include a scan of both the DVD case jacket and the DVD it self. The only program that will let me add data files to the DVD backup is Nero Recode.... New feature for CloneDVD2?

My first attempt was using AnyDVD and then burn with Recode Nero had the following error when DVD-Video files reallocation started:

“Required file VTS_21_0.VOB is not present”
“DVD-Video files relocation failed”

Next I tried to process it through VOBBlanker ad got the “Reached the 99 VTS limit” error (this is the second title that puts 99 VTS files on the DVD (Saw 3 was the first)). Then I used CloneDVD2 as outlined above and it all worked.

What version of VobBlanker are you using as the last 2 Beta versions are supposed to handle it?

Using Anydvd ripper + Recode should be able to produce a main movie only backup.

@ Corie23,

If the particular DVD Movie cannot be viewed in a DVD device by definition it is defective and should be returned for a replacement or total refund.

Stranger Than Fiction (R1 Widescreen) has executables!

DO NOT PURCHASE THIS TITLE!
Sony is cruising on the edge of their customers tolerance once again!
Yes - this title has a slew of nonsense ifo commands, and vts files.
But - what is unforgiveable is that this title also has autorun executables in it.
For all those poor shnooks who still have autorun enabled on their computers - Sony is now mucking around doing whatever it feels like!
My Lite-On sata dvd drive says it is a non-standard disc format and refuses to read it or play it in any standard run of the mill dvd player program.
Is this a Sony or Lite-On problem? I do not know. Nor do I care since other Sony titles as recent as "Marie Antoinette" read and play just fine in this drive.
Avoid this title. Do not buy it.
Do not rent it.
If you've already purchased it or rented it - bring it back.
If you have a dvd drive which refuses to see it - complain to the drive manufacturer about that - threaten to return the dvd drive - and bring the dvd back right away!
That is what I am doing with it!

Alan,

I just got my copy from amazon ... Gonna go at it after dinner. I know you don't like compression, so did you split it with CloneDVD? If so, what chapter did you split it on? Or did you just backup DVD5 style to test if you could duplicate any problems? I may just do this one Verb DL via CloneCD ... since I don't relish the thought of de-selecting 99 TS's!

BTW: I find all the above, angry talk about not buying the movie just plain silly(!)... Or not comforming to DVD standards etc. What do you expect(?) ... they're at war with you! Sorry, you are all old friends on this thread ... no dis intended ... just my opinion.

Correction-Post:

Sorry Alan, I was mixing you up with Webslinger who doesn't like compressed backups ... so I have no idea whether you do or don't do your backups done via DVD5 with compression.

Sorry - shoving executables onto an entertainment optical media to install themselves on unsuspecting customers is unforgivable. Having a brand new optical drive that considers the disc to contain an unreadable file format is just plain silly (is this Sony at war with Lite-On - or in collaboration with?).
And yes - the disc is perfectly readable using my Benq drive - and rippable using a freebie program (RipIt4Me) as well as AnyDVD - so my message to Sony is what is the point?
The disc is going back tomorrow due to the fact that it is unreadable in my Lite-On disc drive - and it wanted to install something on my computer.

Oh, don't get me wrong ... I despise Sony for their RootKit abomination. For their refusal to conform to industry standards commitees in an attempt to collect licensing royalties by forcing their own standards on the marketplace such as: their attempt to hijack the Video standards in the 70's, their attempts to hijack the CD standard in the early 80's, their attempts to hijack the DVD standard in the mid 90's. This is a despicable orgainization.

But I might like the director, actors, writers, the score, and everything that went into the production. Great movies end up being produced by bastards like sony. And whatever happened to the caveat that foreign corporations are not allowed to own interest in American media. MONEY and the corruption of the American ideal of "For The People". And don't anyone try to say that they are not foreigners unless you really want to see me let loose.

But Rich, wadayagonnado? A few guys returning movies is gonna be about as effective in fighting Sony Imperialism as believing that the US can successfully occupy Iraq! This is what I mean by silly. But I understand your need to vent and "do something" about it

Yah, I have always felt that with power and wealth, kinks could begin to show up in firmware updates. An encoding only on certain "brand" originals that a drive responds to.

Suggest never putting any original into your drive without AnyDVD running for exactly this reason.

I'm certain you're copy also has 99 VTSs, you're just referring to the '83' bad sector removals...

Disabling autorun serves that purpose . .

Everyone gets to make their own decisions regarding who they will give their hard earned money to for what level and type of products and services. If you are ok with entertainment oriented optical media designed to install malicious software on your computer, and/or be completely unreadable by new optical drives, then by all means continue to plunk down your money for this stuff.
