Still having Arcoss + Xvid problems with AnyDVD.

I'm still running into sound sync problems when converting Across protected discs (such as The Longest Yard, Madagascar (Now infamous it seems!)). I've tried using AnyDVD ripper but this seems to overcompensate the sound going from drastically late to early! Is this supposed to be fixed on the latest (5.9.4.1) version of anyDVD (which I have) or has no solution been found yet (other than the joys of trying to guess how much out the sound sync is in milliseconds and correct for it?

I've also tried running the discs through Clone and then converting the files it outputs but this doesn't work either.

So I'm a bit stumped. Anyone any ideas?

Re: Still having Arcoss + Xvid problems with AnyDVD.

I have found two solutions that seem to resolve the problems.

The first program is called MPEG Mediator, It is a little hard to use but in a nutshell.

0) Rip the DVD with DVD Decrypter in IFO mode.
1) Open IFO file for your DVD (not vob files)
2) Configure the xvid coded for pass 1.
3) Configure audio.
4) Set output file
5) Add to Joblist
6) Repeate steps 1-5 for pass 2
7) Start

The second program is FairUse, seems to work great with AnyDVD; cost $20.

Let me know if this fixes it for you. I just did Longest Yard with AnyDVD and FairUse two nights ago.

Which CloneDVD Version? 2.8.8.1 or better may have a fix for that. You could try CloneDVD mobile as well (VOB passthrough setting).

Or, honestly, just use the remaster option in ShrinK!

Re: Still having Arcoss + Xvid problems with AnyDVD.

@ Weaver4: These both seem to be programs for actually encoding to .avi - I already have a program for that in AutoGK, which produces output compatible with my standalone DVD player.

@Tru: CloneDVD 2.8.8.2 is what I'm using. I tried just running the files I wanted to convert to avi through it (with 100% quality), because I read that the output files it produces should be completely compliant with DVD standards. However when I convert the VOB files it produces they still have the sound sync issue that suggests whatever is confusing AutoGK is still there.

@Gurm: I was under the impression the vobblanker was just exactly what the AnyDVD ripper was. In which case I don't see how it would help. Do you suggest I rip with DVDDecrypter (with anydvd) and then use VobBlanker. I'm fairly sure last time I did this it overcompensated the sound sync from being late to early, the same as anydvd ripper seems to. As for shrink, I assume you mean just outputting the VOBs I want to convert and then trying to use AutoGK on them? Don't see what the difference is to CloneDVD but will give it a go.

Menawhile, any other ideas? I guess what I'm really not sure about is whether or not AnyDVD is supposed to be fixed with this - because there is a post from James saying they were working on it but it doesn't seem to be in the changelog.

A little off-topic in this forum, but if you use the psl plugin as described here...
http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=56831
...you won 't have video/audio desync, when encoding with AutoGK....

Well see part of the problem is that you're using AutoGK. There was a VERY similar post on Doom9 the other day and it turned out that AutoGK is BAD at audio/video sync in some cases like this.

I'm suggesting that you use Shrink... do "reauthor", pick ONLY the movie, trim the blank space from the beginning and end, output THAT to a VOB, and THEN load that VOB up in AutoGK or whatever.

But what you might notice is that the ripped VOBs play just fine. This indicates that perhaps some of the blame lies with your encoder, no?

Re: Still having Arcoss + Xvid problems with AnyDVD.

The PgcEdit PSL2 plugin has done the job. It's strange that AutoGK works when using the pluging with Arcoss discs but nothing else seems to. I'm not sure I understand why that is but I guess Gurm must be right in that it's a problem with AGK. At least I know how to sort it now and thanks for all the help.

Re: Still having Arcoss + Xvid problems with AnyDVD.

Well I wouldn't COMPLETELY blame AutoGK. It's like the errors that Shrink/Recode were having with AnyDVD. It has SOMETHING to do with how AnyDVD is providing the output, so James can take steps to alleviate the problem, but it's not entirely AnyDVD's fault...

Re: Still having Arcoss + Xvid problems with AnyDVD.

Yakuza965 The programs that I mentioned do a much better job of keeping the audio in sync with the video when it does a encode. Think of it this way: You can take the Longest Yard movie and play it on the cheapest DVD player on the market and the audio and video are in sync. So the data is all there and correctly formatted. But some programs look at this data "too much" as files and just copy the files over to your hard-drive, some of these files have "garbage" in them to try to fool the encoders. Some encoders don't even look at the IFO file which is the file that tells the DVD player how to play the movie. When a encoder ignores this information it is much more likely that it will have "sync" problem. Both of the programs I mention (MPEG Mediator and FairUse) look at the IFO file to determine the correct way to read the file to keep it in sync.

The second approach is for a ripper to look at the IFO file and the content of the files on the DVD and prepare the vob files have the garbage removed before they are encoded.

I prefer the first approach because it means that any DVD that plays on a standard DVD player should be able to be backed up. The second approach will only work until the manufactures of DVDs figure out how to "insert more garbage".

Re: Still having Arcoss + Xvid problems with AnyDVD.

Hello Folks,

This is the AnyDVD Forum and I am sorry but the bulk of this thread discussion is off-topic has absolutely nothing to do with the AnyDVD software program.

If you guys want to troubleshoot Xvid and associated software problems suggest moving this discussion over to the Copy DVD Movie general Forum (http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=62).

Best Regards,
bjkg

I disagree. Everything one wants to do with video requires a tool-chain. Two of the most popular things are to back-up a movie to a DVD ( CloneDVD) and compress a movie for storage (AVI). This thread is how to do the latter with anydvd. One could use DVDFab Decrypter with FixVTS, or they could use DVD Decrypter with PCE Edit. But how does one use the best tool (that would be anydvd) to accomplish the same thing? Having a solution would increase the Revenue of anydvd so it belongs in this forum.

You see many messages in this forum for problems with anydvd and dvd shrink; those problems may be related to dvd shrink but they are still discussed in this forum. No difference here.

My earlier post may have been dedicated to avi encode tools but they are tools that I have found work well with anydvd.

Yeah I'm with you here weaver4 - the reason I asked the question here was that some time ago James from Slysoft said they were working on a fix for xvid problems with anydvd - I was wondering why it still seemed to not work and whether there had been a fix/workaround implemented. That seems pretty closely related to anydvd to me!

Does it work when you use the AnyDVD ripper?

Nope. Still out of Sync. (only with AutoGK though - as mentioned previously it works with FairUse and others.)
