1. Drag-n-drop the VIDEO_TS folder from the DVD to your hard drive. I usually make a folder named the same thing as the title of the DVD and drop the VIDEO_TS folder into that one... that keeps things straight.

2. Run whatever program you like.

It's really that simple. Just rip it first.

Re: Sky High

Gurm,
Using your method, then using CloneDVD's write existing data, can you still split the movie or juggle around or remove unwanted title sets, audio & subtitle tracks?

Thanks,
Whisperer

Not using write existing data, but, you could indeed use the Clone DVD button to split the disc from the hard drive. However, using CloneDVD there's almost never a need to do that...just work with the disc directly. Now if you're using some other encoder such as DVD Shrink or Recode then Gurm's method makes a lot more sense. I personally have been using Vob Blanker in combination with AnyDVD to rip to the hard drive. I can remove stuff I don't want in that process such as ads and warnings. Then I can either CloneDVD that or if the disc is really big still then I'll DVD-RB it.

Ya, that's the way I always do it. Just curious about the other method. Never had a movie yet that I couldn't backup with the "Copy DVD" method. Just had to wait a day or so, once in a while, for AnyDVD to catchup to new protections.

Yup. But if you can't do it with CloneDVD it's highly unlikely that copying it directly to the hard drive will make any difference. It's possible but unlikely. The only reason I switched from doing it exclusively with CloneDVD to Vob Blanker is that I can remove more things with Vob Blanker. Otherwise I'd still be using the CloneDVD method. I like to remove stuff and then remove the buttons for the options I've taken out so I use Vob Blanker to remove unwanted material and copy it to the hard drive, PGCEdit to hide the unwanted buttons, and then I either CloneDVD that if it's small enough or I DVD-RB it if it's large. Works for me every time.

Re: Sky High

Try copying the VIDEO_TS folder from the DVD to your hard drive first, and then use DVD Shrink or CloneDVD on the files on the hard drive. If that still does not work, I suggest getting a copy of Vob Blanker. Open the DVD in Vob Blanker with AnyDVD running and then output it to a folder on the hard drive. That will correct the structure problem that's causing DVD Shrink to fail.

Re: Sky High

I don't mean to intrude on the thread here, I have a copy of VobBlanker, and have the default settings enabled, after inserting the dvd into the drive, how do I know what file to process? I've never actually used it before and was needing advice on the program. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

AnyDVD 5.6.1.1 works fine, just looking for information.

Re: Sky High

@dmp31

Yea, no problem. In the input folder edit, click the browse button and drill down into the DVD's VIDEO_TS folder and select the IFO file. When it's done processing that, select the Output folder's browse button and select a directory on your hard drive to save the VIDEO_TS folder's contents to. Next just hit the process!! button at the bottom. When it's done, you can then use whatever shrinking program you want. I hope this helps!

P.S. You can obviously remove content before hitting process!! but I don't really want to go into how to do that here. There are vobblanker tutorials out there for that.

Re: Sky High

Good Lord, I'm always amazed.

Nobody has tried ripping BEFORE processing yet?

You are all aware that 99.99% of the issues with AnyDVD and shrinking software... is due to NOT ripping first, right?

I mean, I understand that it'd be NICE if we could all use AnyDVD completely transparently, but in practice, especially with brand new releases...

Re: Sky High

Worked ok using DVD Decrypter to rip to hard drive using detect structure protection set to aggressive. It inserted dummy sectors. Then I used the latest CloneDVD2 to rip out the trailers and it corrected something in the IFO file. After that it worked fine using DVDRebuilder to re-encode to DVD5.

Re: Sky High

DVDD choked at about 50 percent for me. I may try the aggressive mode next time. Thanks for the info.
I also use DVD-RB but this movie was small enough (less than 4000Mb I believe) to put on a DVD-5 with no compression, movie only.

Regards,

Re: Sky High

I use just about everything, when I have a problem with one I revert to the other. The end result is something is gonna work. And with the help of the guys and gals on this forum you can't go wrong. Without sounded like a complete idiot though; what is DVD-RB? And I have never used VOB Blanker, explain.

My current softwares are:
AnyDVD
CloneDVD
DVD Decrypter
DVD FAB Express Decrypter
DVD CSS Protection (Region Free)

Re: Sky High

DVD-RB is DVD Rebuilder...it's a program that uses encoders rather than transcoders to shrink the DVD. Reencoding of large movies generally give better results than transcoding.

Vob Blanker allows you to blank out parts of a DVD such as previews, trailers, logos, etc. Removing the unwanted crap before transcoding or reencoding gives a little more space to play with.

And I've never had a problem with just using AnyDVD and CloneDVD for most of my movies. If the movie is too large to transcode(70-80% is my threshold depending on the type of movie) then I use DVD-RB but still AnyDVD works fine for me. When it doesn't, I email slysoft and tell them about it and a few hours later a new version is magically released.
