Question For Olli ?

Hello Olli,

It appears that many Forum members are reporting an increased problem reading numerous DVDs and getting CRC Read Errors when using AnyDVD to decrepit and remove copy protections.

Many of these titles that Forum members are reporting as problematic I have used AnyDVD- CloneDVD and made backup copies without any problems.

I use a Lite-On SOHD-167T DVD-ROM as my “Reader” and a NEC ND-3500 as my “Burner”. I also ensure that I have the latest version of AnyDVD-CloneDVD and it is a rarity that I ever have problems making backup copies of my DVDs.

It is know fact that some DVD “Reader” hardware devices are better than others. The Lite-On SOHD-167T DVD-ROM and other Lite-On DVD-ROMs (163/165/166) are noted for their ability to read data with out errors. Perchance could the problem that many Forum members are experiencing reading the DVD with AnyDVD be related to the poor “Reading” ability of their particular DVD “Reader” hardware device. If so what steps can Forum members take to improve the “Reading” ability of their “Reader” hardware device.

I also remember in the early days of CloneCD that Elaborate Bytes had a list of “Preferred” CD Burners available so that customers were made aware of a particular CD Burners “Specifications” that allowed the full potential of the CloneCD software program. Perchance could a similar list of DVD Burners be made available to customers.

I welcome any comments that you might have on this topic.

Best Regards,
bjkg

Re: Question For Olli ?

..and couldn´t the enormous read speeds of newer drives also cause this problem?
Would it be possible to slow down/control the read speed of a dvd drive with AnyDVD? What will happen if a dvd drive supporting min.8x slowed down to 4x? Will that destroy or lame it after several uses?

please give me some insights

thanks and greetings

Re: Question For Olli ?

bjkg, I agree with the DVD ROM drive being a possible problem, I had an old, well used Pioneer 106 DVD ROM drive that was a complete pain. It was always misreading disc's. As well LITEON being good at reading disc's, I now use a Samsung TS-H352 and it's excellent, it seems to read anything, including DVD RAM.

Since having this drive, I have never had a problem backing up any disc using Any DVD and Clone DVD. I recon you have a good point there. I don't know what Ollie will say, I look forward to his comments.

It is true that some devices read particukar DVDs better. But these DVDs are usually badly manufactured. I have the Swiss version of Fahrenheit 9/11 and this DVD is so badly pressed, it plays only in some DVD-ROMs, and they need very long and several retries to read the disc (I believe I used either a PX-W708 or a Pioneer DVD-ROM, can't remember). I needed to copy the disc to harddisk to watch it without skipping and freezing!
I was just to lazy to send it back and ask for an exchange, but this disc is defective. It is broken. People should slap this cr*p right into the face of the manufacturer.
What I am trying to say: If a drive can't read/play a disc properly, either the drive or the disc is defective. Sometimes you can be lucky trying a different drive (like I was), but it doesn't make sense to make a list of drives.
In Video DVD world, you don't need any special features like raw mode, writing "weak sectors" or "fast error skip".
The only advice I can give is to avoid Panasonic / Matshita drives because of their stupid region locking.

AnyDVD can already do this.

Re: Question For Olli ?

Hi Olli, thanks for answering .Actually i had no need to use & try AnyDVD till now because of dvdd...but i am quite sure that might change soon or later...

As for good dvd writers from my experiences i would recommend:
Plextor, Toshiba and there seems to be some good russian-dvddrive which was good for copying starforce3 but i can´t remember the name anymore ....somebody the name present?

Re: Question For Olli ?

@ Arktos,

Years ago I would agree about the quality and reliability of Plextor Products. I in fact own a couple of Plextor CD Burners that were actually manufactured by Plextor.

I am aware that recently Plextor has been marketing DVD Burners that are actually manufactured by NEC, BenQ, Sanyo, Matsushita, and possibly other manufactures. I am also aware that Plextor cannot even assure Plextor owners that the Plextor Plextools software will work with Plextor DVD Burners.

I am not confident about the quality and reliability of today’s Plextor product (See Olli’s comment #4 concerning Matsushita drives). My comment is if Plextor DVD Drives were such a great product why would they have to farm out the manufacturing of their product out to other companies to make their DVD Drives.

Best Regards,
bjkg

ohhh what a pitty ...i was just going to buy a new one of those Plextor released dvd drives...but bjkg please i have one question, would you still recommend Plextor 712A or are there better ones out there now from other companys not named here?

finally found this special cd drives being able to copy starforce3...
Teac CD-W548E
so wouldn´t they have good dvd drives than build aswel lif these cd drives are so good?!

I am looking for a good dvd writing drive which also still has 2x 4x writing speeds and also features auto boot burns and al these other special things...
also region patching should be done by firmware updating and such...

greetings

Re: Question For Olli ?

@ Arktos,

I am partial to NEC DVD Burners but don’t let that influence you in your decision.

I would suggest visiting the CD Freaks CD & DVD Burner Forum (http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=61) and do a little research before I purchased a DVD Burner.

In response to your specific question concerning the Plextor 712A I would visit the CD Freaks Plextor Forum (http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=43) and do a little searching there.

There are some very talented firmware modifiers that frequent the CD Freaks DVD Burner Forum and you can find various firmwares that optimizer the full potential of particular DVD Burners.

Best Regards,
bjkg
