Problems

First off I am new here, so greetings to all.

I run a presario laptop with a usb connected external DVD writer, dual layer.
I have been using DVDshrink successfully. I have down loaded the trial of AnyDVD and CloneDVD2. The problem I have is with two Star Trek DVDs Both having the same issue. Both are new DVDs with no scratches or visible damage. Both play in my sony DVD recorder on the TV, but not in my TEAC player. Both DVDs play on my laptop. However on both DVDs I am unable to copy them or the files on them, the issue is with one .vob file only. With anyDVD running they appear to be ok, and show up unencrypted. However when it comes to the point of reading/copying the one .vob file the DVD device stops reading and the software stops responding. The only way out is to remove the disk and switch off the DVD unit. I suspect it to be a protection issue that beats anyDVD. Although it sometimes brings up a message that it is a disk fault. I seem to be unable to find a solution. The rip function in anyDVd also fails and is unable to fix the file. Also disks burnt with cloneDVD2 are rejected by the DVD units on my TV, they will not recognise the disks as DVDs.
Advice and assistance in this would be appreciated.

Re: Problems

@ Mountnman,

Welcome to the Forum.

To avoid any confusion when making a Forum posting provide the version number of the software you are using.

It would be helpful to provide any error codes and complete error narrative that you receive when experiencing your problem.

You state that these problematic DVD titles fail to play on your “TEAC player”. Please provide amplifying information on your “TEAC player”. Exactly what is a TEAC player” ?

You state “the software stops responding”. Please provide amplifying information on “the software stops responding”. Exactly what “software stops responding” ?

You state “disks burnt with cloneDVD2 are rejected by the DVD units on my TV”. Please provide the MID (Manufacture ID and Media Code) (Example: TYG02) of the blank DVD Media you used to burn these DVDs. To obtain the MID (Manufacture ID and Media Code) (Example: TYG02) use a software utility program similar to DVD Identifier (http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com) or DVDInfo (http://www.dvdinfopro.com).

Also provide the Manufacture Name and Model Number of your “the DVD units on my TV”.

Also provide the Manufacture Name and Model Number and Firmware version of the External DVD Burner you are using in conjunction with your Presario LapTop Computer. To obtain the Firmware Version of you External DVD Burner use either DVD Identifier or DVD Info.

Also provide the exact complete name of the Commercial DVD Movie Title that are causing the difficulties.

AnyDVD 5.9.4.1 CloneDVD2 2.8.9.2 DVDShrink3.2 3.2.0.15 Nero 6.6.0.16 Smart Ripper 2.1 Ulead Burn Now 1.1.5.0 I am running XP Home, sp2 with all microsoft updates

It would be helpful to provide any error codes and complete error narrative that you receive when experiencing your problem.

Error codes do not appear untill DVD burner is turned off, and only relate to not finding the burner anymore

You state that these problematic DVD titles fail to play on your “TEAC player”. Please provide amplifying information on your “TEAC player”. Exactly what is a TEAC player” ?
TEAC player is my crappy TEAC brand DVD player model DV 3150

You state “the software stops responding”. Please provide amplifying information on “the software stops responding”. Exactly what “software stops responding” ?

The software that stops is whatever I am using, i.e. The AnyDVD rip to HDD that fixs stuff stops getting info from DVD reader and will not respond to buttons, CloneDVD2 stops getting info from DVD and fails to respond to buttons, DVDShrink either during analysing or encoding stops getting info from DVD and will not respond to buttons. This also occurs if I try to copy from the DVD with nero or ulead with AnyDVD running. Without AnyDVD nero and ulead see the protection.

The blank DVDs I use are 8X imation DVD+Rs, when copied from the CloneDVD2 copy with DVDShrink they work fine, so I do not think the media is the issue. But they are
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:CMC MAG-E01-000]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [Not Available]
Manufacturer Name : [CMC Magnetics Corp.]
Manufacturer ID : [CMC MAG]
Media Type ID : [E01]
Product Revision : [Not Specified]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier V4.3.0 - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also provide the Manufacture Name and Model Number of your “the DVD units on my TV”.

The DVD player I was using is the TEAC DVD player model DV3150, it had issues with playing some of the copies I have made and struggled to play some of the commercial DVDs also, including the two mentioned below. It would pause during playback and jump ahead a bit, repeatedly, failing to respond to buttons during the pause.
My new machine is a Sony DVD Recorder model RDR-HX710, it does not have any issues playing any disks so far, even the ones that the TEAC struggles with, but still will not recognise the DVDClone2 burnt disks as DVDs

Also provide the Manufacture Name and Model Number and Firmware version of the External DVD Burner you are using in conjunction with your Presario LapTop Computer. To obtain the Firmware Version of you External DVD Burner use either DVD Identifier or DVD Info.

The external usb DVD burner is showing as "DVDR/RW DD1601 - [FW 15AF] - [USB]" I am unable to find a brand name, but I suspect it is samsung.

Also provide the exact complete name of the Commercial DVD Movie Title that are causing the difficulties.

Star Trek - The Collectors Edition - TNG 17 and Star Trek - The Collectors Edition - TNG 18 are the two that will not copy. Each has three episodes on it, and it is always the second episode that has the issues. 1 & 3 play fine and I am able to copy the files off the disk. It is just one .vob file pertaining to the second episode on the disk that resists, if I can just get the data of the disk I'll be all right.
The two disks that were copied by CloneDVD2 and were not recognised by either the DVD player or the DVD recorder were of Transporter 2 and Today You Die, however I have overcome this.

I hope I have supplied sufficient info this time

Regards

Re: Problems

@ Mountnman,

When attempting to make backup copies of Commercial DVD Movie Titles ensure that all background activities and invasive operations like Ant-Virus and Packing Writing are curtailed and that all Multi-Tasking operations are ceased. This is extremely important when using external USB devices.

Suggest viewing the below PC World article concerning DVD Burner Firmware.

http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article...,115672,00.asp

Research indicates that your DVD Burner is an OptoRite DD1601 DVD Burner and the current version 15AF is old and out dated. Below is a Web Link for the newer current version 16AF Firmware which provides improved media compatibility.

http://www.opendrivers.com/driver/22...-download.html

Also your CMC MAG E01 blank DVD Media is known low grade cheap blank DVD Media that has proved to be very problematic. Suggest acquiring proven known quality blank DVD Media. Locally procured FujiFilm or Sony, which clearly states Made In Japan has proven to be quality DVD Media and avoid purcahasing FujiFilm or Sony manufacture in any other country other than Made In Japan because is media quality is unknown and should be considered suspect. In many circles Taiyo Yuden Media is consider high quality top of the Media. Rima.Com (http://www.rima.com) is a reliable source of Taiyo Yuden Media.

To insure the greatest compatibility of recorded DVD Media suggest using DVD-R Media, which is more compatible with a greater number of DVD playback devices than DVD+R media.

When using the AnyDVD- CloneDVD software combination and encounter problems with particular .VOB files in a Commercial DVD Movie Title use the “AnyDVD Ripper” function which is accessed by right clicking on the Red Fox Icon located the lower right Task Bar. To acquire detailed information concerning the ‘AnyDVD Ripper” function use the Forum “Search” button are research the “AnyDVD Riper” feature.

Also it should be noted that your Nero software is old and out dated. There is a newer vision 6.6.1.4 that corrects and improves some functions of Nero.

Also have you ensured that your USB data cable is of top high caliber quality and not some cheap inferior quality?

Also have you closely viewed the Star Trek - The Collectors Edition - TNG 17 and Star Trek - The Collectors Edition - TNG 18 DVDs in a stand-alone desktop DVD device and ensured that there are any noticeable visual errors? It could possible be that these two DVDs in question contain manufacturing mastering errors which prevent copying.

bjkg

Re: Problems

Thank you bjkg,
A very informative response. I have obviously got some work to do updateing some stuff. I also have some things you brought up to check out as well. I have tried the ripper mode in AnyDVD you mentioned and it works no better. I will investigate getting better quality DVDs, but I suspect it will be difficult in my location due to lack of choices. I am unable to access a desktop DVD. It may be of interest that I am unable to access the disk burnt on my sony DVD recorder in my laptop, although AnyDVD does seem to read it and brings up a report at first.
Once again, thank you for your help and advice

Re: Problems

@ Mountnman,

I am confused. In two previous Forum postings in this thread you stated that you had a TEAC DVD Model DV3150. The TEAC DVD Model DV3150 is stand-alone desktop DVD device. Why cannot you view the Star Trek - The Collectors Edition - TNG 17 and Star Trek - The Collectors Edition - TNG 18 DVDs in your TEAC DVD Model DV3150 and closely monitor the playback of these DVDs for any visual abnormalities, which could be an indication that these two DVDs in question could contain manufacturing mastering errors, which prevent copying? It is not that unusual to run across Commercial DVD Movies Tiles that were manufactured with defects.

You fail to mention the area that you are located in but if in the USA Rima.Com (http://www.rima.com) is a reliable source of Taiyo Yuden Media. If not located in the USA suggest conducting a Web Search and try to locate a Web Retailer in your area that caries Taiyo Yuden Media. The quality of Taiyo Yuden Media is well worth the effort in locating.

Best Regards,

Re: Problems

Ah, yeah, ok, my mistake, I thought you were refering to a desktop pc with a DVD player in it, did not realise you meant the TEAC, it seems to have major issues playing those DVDs, yet my New SONY has no issues playing anything. Have fixed everything but being able to extract the data from the two Star Trek DVDs. Did this by uninstalling and then reinstalling all nero stuff, also downloaded the latest updates and installed them as well. So only reading the two DVDs is an issue, I suspect damage to the DVDs. I am in a rural location in New Zealand.

Re: Problems

@ Mountnman,

The normal installation of Nero installs Packet Writing software called InCD. InCD and all other Packet Writing software programs are very invasive and can cause conflict error problems with various Burning Programs. Strongly suggest removing any and all Packet Writing software programs.

Re: Problems

I have bought the latest version of AnyDVD and CloneDVD2, I no longer run inCD. Although I have had to eject and then reload and continue with Clone DVD many times during ripping the disc because of read errors I have suceeded copying the disk. I have noted that nero will not burn the copy unless speed control is turned off in AnyDVD, something to do with aspi. The bottom line is I have won!!!! So I am very happy now.
