Problem with XP64, AnyDVD and Alcohol120%

Using
  • Windows XP-Pro 64bit (installed today and patched up to current levels)
  • AnyDVD 6.0.6.3
  • Alcohol 120% 1.9.5 (build 4327)
  • MSI ComboX48
AnyDVD is able to correctly identify a disc - for example, Real Men R1 - and add the CSS key to it's archive, but Alcohol still reports that the disc is copy-protected.

Am I missing a setting somewhere, or is Alcohol being a bit 64-bit aware and bypassing 32-bit AnyDVD?

Are there plans for a 64-bit version of AnyDVD?

You could try to change AnyDVD's SafeMode setting. You are already running the 64-bit version of AnyDVD.

Re: Problem with XP64, AnyDVD and Alcohol120%

Tru : "SafeMode" didn't help - Alcohol still barfs with the same error.

zaq : Are you using the same software versions and optical drive? FWIW and ICIM, my ComboX48 is running firmware 1.50 and it's connected solo to the only IDE channel on this 975X-based mobo...

Interestingly, I've succesfully kicked off a "Rip Video-DVD to Harddisk" process with no problem. CloneDVDmobile says the disk is corrupt, but reads the ripped folder quite happily.

VLC 0.85 (x86) will read and play both the DVD and the ripped content.

At first I thought it might be a problem with the drive itself as it is quite aged but it was handy - it'll be partnered by a new RW once I can find somewhere with SATA units so no biggie if it just won't work. However, since AnyDVD itself appears to read the discs without issue, this suggested that the problem might be an software interaction issue.

Any further thoughts?

Re: Problem with XP64, AnyDVD and Alcohol120%

the software are all SS latest versions drive is Benq1655 with latest FW
Why don't you try something other than alcohol to rip?
try dvdshrink, voblanker free progs and you can even try clondvd2 trial from SS
you can event try the built in ripper in AD or even a simple drag and drop of the dvd files to HDD
many options are still there
make sure AD is always running

But are you using Alcohol 120% to read the discs with?

I did - see above - and that worked.

That I can do, having been a licenced user of the entire Slysoft suite for some 18 months or so.

In any event, some futher dicking around has yielded a solution - changing the Device Control Interface setting on the Options/General tab in Alcohol 120% from "default" to "ATAPI/SCSI" resolves everything, and I can make images again.

AnyDVD is a 64-bit driver (otherwise it would not run on 64-bit OS). Are you are using a RAID controller to connect your optical drives? If yes, try to use the Microsoft drivers, not the drivers from the controller, if possible.
It is possible that AnyDVD needs to run in Safe Mode because of your controller, but then Alcohol (which digs very deep into the system because of the copy protection circumvention it does) will bypass AnyDVD.
It is also possible that Alcohol cannot work with AnyDVD on 64 bit systems at all. I never tried this. I suggest you try CloneCD if you want to make 1:1 copies of protected Video DVDs in combination with AnyDVD.

Ah! This is good to know. I am glad it worked out!

Re: Problem with XP64, AnyDVD and Alcohol120%

"Dicking" around always helps

also NO
I don't use Alcohol software

used to, long time back to back up certain pc games
out of that phase now

Re: Problem with XP64, AnyDVD and Alcohol120%

Well, it seems that my dicking around was only superficially successful.

While Alcohol gave every appearance of making an image of the disc, the resultant image was unreadable by *anything* when mounted.

James - the optical drive is connected as master to the single IDE/P-ATA connector on this motherboard (Abit AW9D-MAX), and it's not a RAID-capable interface. I've also tried AnyDVD in both "safe" and (presumably) "un-safe" modes but to no avail. Also, fair comment regarding the 64bit-ness of AnyDVD - I hadn't quite thought things through last night. Certainly this combination of software in 32bit-land works satifyingly well...

zaq - FWIW, I don't actually use those bits of Alcohol (honest), but I find it a much better tool than the combination of Nero and DaemonTools for managing images generally - I have to do lots of stuff with MSDN downloads for work, etc.

Anyway, it looks like I'm SOL with this particular combination of software and OS - I shall probably end up ditching XP-64 as the driver support is woefully inadequate... I only installed it because Vista RC1 barfed horribly during installation... at least I got a nice snap of the BSOD to torment our MS-TAM with on Monday morning.

Ah well, life on the bleeding edge...

Only had time to try CloneCD (as recommended above by those you should know) - it appeared to work but created 7*1gb files instead of 1*7gb file, which is not useful. Maybe I missed a config setting, but I don't really have time to play during the week - I had just hoped for things to *work*... after all, this is no longer the dark ages of the 20th century.

At some point I might try the remaining utils I have licensed copies of - but I'll probably instead revert to XP32. I spend enough time in the office trying to get things to work that should but don't to want to spend more time at home doing the same thing.

that's the way clonecd works. did you try burning and seeing if it works? if you don't want to waste a dl dvd then try to find a 3gb file (and it will make 3 1gb files) and try it with a single layer dvd.

Or mount it with Virtual CloneDrive.

Re: Problem with XP64, AnyDVD and Alcohol120%

I didn't try mounting or burning the results that CloneCD produced, since it didn't produce results in the format I wanted - I'll get to it again at some point, but I have more important things to worry about for the moment.
