having problems with backing up my Closer dvd having the same problems as everybody else in this forum. I'm using anydvd version 5.4.4.1 and have tried to copy it with dvd decripter clone dvd2 and dvd shrink. this is the report I get from anydvd.

and this is what clone dvd does.

invalid block start code

one or more blocks might be corrupted by a prior copying process or by the source device covering critical read errors.
try copying files to your harddrive(again) and retry

any suggestions cheers

Which Closer DVD (Country)?

it was supposed to have been fixed in 5.4.3.1 (previous version) but i had a problem with the rental version, didn't try 5.4.4.1 though. recode/ dvdshrink said it was missing vts_1_8.ifo or something.

dvdfab decrypter ripped it fine and then recode handled it fine.

was a bit of a crap film though after all that, natalie portman taking a leaf out of sin city's book and having fully clothed strippers!

By R2 we mean UK (Europe and Africa?)

R2 could mean German, Italian, France... (they all have different versions)

If you suspect AnyDVD send the .IFO files to Slysoft. If a new form of protection is found they usually release a new update in a day or so to correct. See the following post for explicit instructions;

I note you listed DVD Decrypter.

A lot of people have had problems lately using DVD Decrypter with AnyDVD, and not setting the right settings in DVD Decrypter.

Try just dragging and dropping the files to the desktop, or even just having CloneDVD open up the disc directly.

I can confirm that there is no problem with Closer R2 UK/Ireland using AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 - can't remember what version I used to back it up it was a while ago - only wish I hadn't bought it in the first place!!! (or is it just me who thinks that a movie of a play - filmed in the same way as the play is acted just doesn't work??)

Just checked - actually Closer R2 UK/Ireland was the first disc I couldn't back up - and which caused me to buy AnyDVD, CloneDVD2 and CloneCD all in the one day - because Slysoft had an update out on the same day (okay technically that update didn't work - but the next one did!! and was my first post on this forum too!!)

well the uk *rental* version must be different then, as it sure don't backup using anydvd in any form!

There has been reported problems with Nero Recode and AnyDVD used together - You could try copying and pasting the DVD to your hard drive first - this normally allows Recode to work.

Of course, it must be an ex-rental copy that you have bought that you are trying to backup

i always copy to hard drive first. i then tried dvd shrink and recode and it didn't work, dvd2one would only work in main movie only mode.

i tried dvdfab decrypter which ripped it fine and enabled recode to do it's stuff, therefore anydvd was the problem, not recode or my use of it. END OF STORY!

I don't know, if copying rental DVDs is legal in the UK, but did you tell SlySoft about this? Did you send IFOs? This could solve the problem.

I tried shrink & recode with anydvd 5.4.4.1,no joy.Then tried it with 1click dvd copy 4.2, backed up perfectly. I generally use the combination of shrink, nero, anydvd, if i get problems i turn to 1click, with dvd decrypter as a last resort. Hope this helps.

So as I said before, AnyDVD 5.4.4.1 will remove the protection from Closer R2 no problem - what seems to be the issue is that certain software packages are not able to handle this. CloneDVD2 and 1click both seem to have no problem!!

Although I bet that someone will still post back saying that these is a problem with AnyDVD because the can't backup Closer R2 using Recode!!

Let me take the opportunity to explain what is going on.
Closer R2 (UK) suffers from various problems. First, it has a new Arccos variation. AnyDVD has already been updated to detect this correctly.
Second, this disc has various mastering errors which are not related to the copy protection at all. AnyDVD already corrected all invalid file pointers in the .ifo files.
Unfortunately it has a new mastering error (new version of the Sony protection crap probably means more DVDs with severe mastering errors?), namely it has VOBUs listed in the title set, which do not exist. elby CloneDVD does not care, but DVDShrink would issue an "out of memory" message.
AnyDVD tried to be gentle, and has sorted the VOBU blocks.
In this particular case it made matters worse, because DVDShrink aborted right away with an "Navigation structure corrupt" error.
We are preparing an updated version of AnyDVD, which will remove the illegal block addresses. I have already made some tests, and DVDShrink does now work correctly.
It is very likely, that other DVDs have similar problems. From what we heard, it is likely that Bewitched R1 (US) has similar problems. However, NOBODY has sent us .ifo files yet, so we can't do anything to solve this problem.

Perchance could you be gracious and also post a copy of your #14 posting in the current Forum posting thread titled “Bewitched”.

In posting #9 in the current Forum posting thread titled “Bewitched” I strongly suggested that Forum Members who were have problems with Bewitched to send you folks the .IFO files but as you state no one has taken the efforts to send the .IFO files. Hopefully if you made a posting in the current Forum posting thread titled “Bewitched” would prompt them to send the necessary files.

I am using DVDFab Express and trying to rip Bewitched. When I try to open files in DVD Shrink error occurs "cannot open files" Help!!

like the man from slysoft said the problem is not anydvd. i have a ex-ental copy of closer that i bought, nero recode , dvd decrypter, will not work. what will work is anydvd and dvd shrink. england regeion 2 dvd. hope this helps.
