Playback Fault with WinDVD and AnyDVD 6.1.0.0

After installing AnyDVD 6.1.0.0, I can no longer play many of the "Buena Vista". One in particular is "Grey's Anatomy" Season 1.

While I'll acknowledge that Buena Vista DVDs are ripe with mastering errors (the same "Grey's Anatomy" discs don't play in my Pioneer DVL-919), this trouble was created by AnyDVD v6.1.0.0. If I disable AnyDVD, or downgrade to v6.0.9.9, the DVDs play correctly.

Any advice - or fix available?

System Information:
Windows XP w/ SP2
PIII 1GHz
1 GB RAM
Plextor PX-712SA & PX-755SA DVD Drives - SATA
Adapted Serial ATA 1205SA controller
Adapted SCSI 39160 Ultra160 Controller
ATI All-In-Wonder 9800 Pro AGP board
WinDVD v5.1 B05.026

blam1 -

Your posting is confusing because it appears that you believe because you have installed the AnyDVD v6.1.0.0 computer software program on your Computer that now your original Commercial DVD Movie Grey's Anatomy Season 1 DVD disk will not play on your Pioneer DVL-919 Stand Alone Desktop playback device. The AnyDVD v6.1.0.0 computer software program (or any other version of the AnyDVD) software program does not do anything to alter or change the data in any way on original Commercial DVD Movie disks. Original Commercial DVD Movie disks are Factory Pressed Manufactured DVD-ROMs disk and no computer software program can Write / Erase / Altar / Change the data on Factory Pressed Manufactured DVD-ROM disks.

If you are unable to view your original Commercial DVD Movie Grey's Anatomy Season 1 DVD disk on your Pioneer DVL-919 Stand Alone Desktop playback device indicates that this particular original Commercial DVD Movie Grey's Anatomy Season 1 DVD disk contains some type of “Flaw”. It is most likely that this “Flaw” contained on your original Commercial DVD Movie Grey's Anatomy Season 1 DVD disk is what is causing your particular problem with the Grey's Anatomy" Season 1 DVD and AnyDVD v6.1.0.0 combination.

The apparent remedy is to acquire a known “Flaw Free” copy of Commercial DVD Movie Grey's Anatomy Season 1 DVD disk.

For what is worth I have made error free backup of copies of the complete Grey's Anatomy Season #1 and # 2 series using AnyDVD/ CloneDVD without any problems.

Also noting your above posted information it might be helpful if you tried using the AnyDVD v6.1.0.0 software program in the “Safe Mode” and see if that improves the performance of AnyDVD.

Thank you very much. You discovered a bug in Macrovision RipGuard processing of AnyDVD 6.1.0.0
The next update will fix this.

Unfortunately it does in this particular case because of a bug. This will be corrected soon.

SlySoft (James),

Please explain your above quoted Forum posting. How does this “Bug” overwrite the data on a Commercial Factory Pressed Manufactured DVD-ROM? This is particularly odd because the AnyDVD software program doesn’t even contain any “Burning Engine” that could be inadvertently be triggered by some “Bug”.

I am having great difficulty understanding how by having the AnyDVD v6.1.0.0 Computer Software Program (or any other version of the AnyDVD) installed on a Computer can trigger a DVD Burning software program to attempt to Write/Erase/Altar/Change the data on a Commercial Factory Pressed Manufactured DVD-ROM Original Commercial DVD Movie. I believe the boot sector on a Commercial Factory Pressed Manufactured DVD-ROM will not allow a DVD Burner to engage the laser to cause any damage to the Commercial Factory Pressed Manufactured DVD-ROM. If I am wrong in this assumption please explain the mechanism that is occurring with this “Bug”.

You are not wrong, of course. But judging the statement from blam1:

Quote:

and

Forum member blam1 was referring to playback of the original discs on the Windows PC where AnyDVD is installed. Stand-alone players don't have AnyDVD running.
AnyDVD does indeed alter the content of a pressed disc "on the fly" while the data is transferred through the operating system (this is its sole purpose).
It does not alter the the content on the physical disc, of course.

Thank you for bringing this problem to my attention.
Please try the new released AnyDVD 6.1.0.1, it should fix your problem.

I can't speak for SlySoft but if you read the initial posting carefully it explains itself, IMO. I believe you misunderstood the initial posting.

As stated by the OP one of two things fixed the problem: (1) Disabling AnyDVD 6.1.0.0 or (2) removing 6.1.0.0 and downgrading to 6.0.9.9. Most likely no AnyDVD version installed would also allow the disc to play fine. If all 3 of these cases existed on 1 computer system then it would be quite likely that the problem was caused by AnyDVD. It was, in fact, AnyDVD and the release notes for 6.1.0.1 state they fixed a problem with Macrovision RipGuard protection being incorrectly removed.

No, data on the disc was ever changed. The problem would occur when the DVDs were read and since AnyDVD runs transparently then if it was incorrectly "fiddling with the data" on-the-fly then it could cause the disc to seem flawed when a person tried to play or copy it on their computer.

Anyway, good to see things fixed so quickly

Re: Playback Fault with WinDVD and AnyDVD 6.1.0.0

This leads me to something I thought way back then that today I would never tell anyone. Being new at the whole burning thing I figured that when I got me new 2x cd rewriter I could take all the cds that AOL was sending me and reburn them with music. When I got to reading up on burning cd's and realized this was just plain stupid. I took the AOL CDS and filed them in file 13. Today I just at how little I knew back then. I realize that people today that have not copied a DVD can make statements like anydvd caused problems with my original DVD or ask will copying a dvd damage the original.
