Need advice on region codes

Hello! I am the newest of newbies, so please forgive my ignorance, but I've spent all day on this and cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I recently ordered a copy of one of my all-time favorite movies, "Clarissa," from England, the only place it is available on DVD. It finally arrived Friday, and I am trying to figure out how to rip it and burn it to a DVD, sans Region 2 encoding, so I can watch it on my regular DVD player.

I downloaded AnyDVD and CloneDVD2, which I thought would take care of the region encoding. With AnyDVD running, I ripped and burned the movie -- only to find that the DVD won't play in either of my non-computer DVD players! (I got a "cannot play" message.) It plays fine on my computer. Have I somehow copied it with the regional encoding?

If it helps, I am running Windows XP with a Lite-On SOHW-812S DVDR/RW drive.

Forgot to add...I'm using Memorex DVD-R 8X discs, and my DVD players are a Sony (a couple years old) and a Samsung (brand-new).

I am not sure, that this problem is really related to region problems, but in case it is, do the following before copying the DVD:

1.) Click "DEFAULT" in AnyDVD settings
2.) Set the Default Region Selector to "2"

Hope this helps!

Re: Need advice on region codes

If that dont work you can also try to use dvd decryptor and dvd shrink both freeware. when it ask you to select the region code if you select the right one it will remove code all together and youll have region free dvd...............Have you used the memorex media before......the media quality could always be problem or even possably firmware

This is exactly what AnyDVD does.

Re: Need advice on region codes

Still no luck -- does the same thing as before Since I've never used the Memorex (or the DVD burner) before, I'm going to try ripping and burning a different, U.S. disc to make sure there are no problems. I'll report back

Re: Need advice on region codes

If you put the disc in the drive when you have DVD Decrypter open, it'll bring up a window if RCE protection is present on the disc.

If it says 'RCE Protection: No', then RCE isnt the problem.

Maybe you player just doesnt support the PAL tv system.

PAL is the UK system, right? The original disc seems to play fine on my computer.

Re: Need advice on region codes

Unless it is something do with the Frames per second, (PAL 25 - NTSC 29.97) Usually though once the region protection is removed, the disc will play, just play it in black and white... I would try using the suggestion of giving DVD Decrypter, just to eliminate AnyDVD is not tripping up on this disc.

Re: Need advice on region codes

Just got done backing up "Resident Evil," and that's working fine in both my DVD players, so I'm thinking it's not the media or the DVD burner. I'm off to give the DVD Decrypter a try....

Re: Need advice on region codes

I've seen loads of instances with PAL wont work on NTSC players.

It appears fine round the other way - i.e. NTSC on PAL - and yes that where it then plays in black and white. The thing is, that black and white problem is down to the TV not supporting NTSC (sometimes a scart will fix that instead of going via co-ax).

This is about the actual dvd player not supporting PAL.
I think all you can do is get a player that actually supports PAL, or have the bother of converting all of your PAL dvds to NTSC.

Re: Need advice on region codes

OK, the DVD Decrypter was a no-go. *Sigh*

CloneDVD is telling me that this DVD's format is "MPEG2 PAL," so I think you pinpointed the problem, Lightning.

Now how can I convert my PAL disc to NTSC? (I only have the one movie in PAL format, so it shouldn't be that big an issue. I hope!)

OK, I've been doing some reading in the forum and would like to amend the above post to say:

"How can I convert my PAL disc to NTSC without trying to follow a process that will likely result in me bursting into tears?"

Re: Need advice on region codes

Sanvean,

If I may suggest, hopefully 1 of your two DVD stand alone DVD players are capable of reading rewriteable DVD's, I would think the Samsung has that capability. Read the owners manual to confirm. While you are experimenting on getting a good burn with your region problem, burn it to the rewriteable, if it doesn't work just erase it and try something different, a quick erase only takes about 20 seconds with the Liteon, I have the same burner. Hell of a lot cheaper than the coasters you end up with.

Also if you don’t already have the software, you can download the free version of DVDInfoPro here, http://www.dvdinfopro.com/.

Just insert your burned disc and click the media tab, it will tell you what regions the DVD was burned for, as well as the media manufacturer and speed of burn. Great utility, I use it all the time. It also has the capability to change the book setting for your Liteon 812S for DVD+ media. I suppose you know the Liteons prefer DVD+ over DVD- media. When you use the book setting change the DVD+ to DVD-Rom.
What this does, it tricks the stand alone player in believing this was a pressed (store bought) disk, rather than burned. It makes the disk readable in just about any player regardless of age.

Re: Need advice on region codes

May I ask if within CloneDVD2 are you are using
option 1 Clone DVD titles, or
option 2 Clone DVD

I ask because my standalone player is a pioneer 355s. I also have a import DVD the itillian Job which is region 1 ( I am region 4) that when I try yo play the disk gives a message "This disk cannot be played".

Now If I try option 2 "Clone DVD" Then i still have the problem on the back up but if i use option 1 "Clone DVD titles" back up the movie only I have a worker.

Sanvean,

As you have figured out, the regions are not the problem -- it's PAL vs. NTSC. I too received a favorite film on DVD in PAL format and would like to convert it to an NTSC DVD. I haven't been able to find anything at cdfreaks explaining how this might be done with AnyDVD and CloneDVD. It seems that other 'transcoding' software is necessary, and it still seems excessively complicated. Let me know if you figure anything out. I will do the same.

A simple --tear free -- but more expensive solution is to buy a region free DVD player with an internal PAL to NTSC converter, which would allow the PAL disc to play on your NTSC television. Look online... here, for example: http://www.dvdoverseas.com/store/ind...talog86_0.html

It might also be possible --but I don't know -- to output from your computer to your tv and play it on your tv that way, but that sort of defeats the purpose, depending on your purposes.

Otherwise, you might have to remain content with watching Clarissa on your computer.

Good luck.

bwisialo, I did find a helpful guide, but no luck so far...it's here: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/arch...vi_tmpgenc.cfm

I haven't had the time to mess around with it as much as I'd like, but I'm still working on it...
