Re: Into the Blue - Can't back up

Yea, well, good luck with that. As you're likely aware, it's not a commercially produced disc. Hence, no one here can really help you with it. The odds are that it was "mastered" incorrectly which is causing your problems.

Re: Into the Blue - Can't back up

It is a commercially produced disk. It has all the trailers and extras along with the cover. This friend of a friend of a friend works here in our town that presses these movies for distribution. He "Borrowed" a pressed disk and backed it up. Have never had problems backing up any of the other ones for the last little while. Oh well, guess I'll keep tis one as a backup and buy the original from the store when it comes out and hope it doesnt have the same problem

Re: Into the Blue - Can't back up

Well, however he backed up the "borrowed" pressed disc is what's causing your issues. The simple fact is there is absolutely NO protection on the disc you have. Not even CSS or region coding. Which means it ain't no original. Plain and simple. Whatever he used to back it up is messing up your ability to copy it. The "solution" to your problem is fairly obvious. Copy the files to your hard drive and use CloneDVD's write existing data function. But, I'd caution you as to where you get your discs. That doesn't sound so kosher to me...

Golly, gee, gosh-darn, I'm confused! He knows damn well it isn't kosher so I'd prefer that we don't even hint at or suggest a solution (as you might have felt compelled to do out of good manners).

There may come a day when the legal survival of cdf depends on the ethics of it's members. He did mention manufacturing and distribution. For all we know, these guys could indeed be the "powers that be" gathering evidence to threaten cdf's right to exist. The right to exchange legit information between people who buy their movies and want only to protect their investment without being beholden to the studios for "replacement programs" (and added charges for same thereof) or "permission" to keep from damage that which we paid for. In other words, our fair-use rights under existing copyright law.

SamuriHL,
You're a decent guy. Most of us are. I don't know if the thread should be closed because it might lead to some interesting discourse, if others join in, on ethics. And cement a pattern of response-behavior, on member's parts, when this kind of posting occurs in the future. Then again, the thread might just die a natural death because of lack of interest or apathy about the subject.

Re: Into the Blue - Can't back up

Funny you should mention ethics as I just had to take 3 more ethics classes for work on Friday. From an ethical standpoint, we should not help this guy. I know that, you know that, we all know that. I tried to overlook the fact that he PROBABLY knew his copy wasn't legit. And after his post about the guy taking pressed DVD's and making copies of them, there really wasn't a question of whether or not I should have helped him. I shouldn't have...period. And ordinarily I wouldn't. I was just in one of those moods I guess.

Re: Into the Blue - Can't back up

And I helped Caboose on the other thread, if you noticed. But I thought about it, off and on, for two weeks and wished I had not. My thoughts on the subject have now crystallized and I won't do the same in the future. And I'm rather glad that a "clone" post came along for me to exercise my "redemption".

I am worried about our fair use rights under established copyright laws going back 100 years, as it relates to the digital medium. To be very brief our rights are and were, first the right to quote from texts without being sued. Followed by transcribing rights, the right to own a copy machine , the right to buy a tape recorder and record off the radio or a video recorder to record a tv show (which is the real reason for the FCC's lobbied and bribed requirement that broadcasting switch to digital--so a CSS stream can be included in the broadcast to stop us from recording). Now that this "new" digital medium is upon us, the movie industry wants to rewrite fair use laws as if "digital content" is some magical word that negates the American citizen's hard earned fair-use legal precidents and rights. I am very worried about our rights being under the power & control of the presently conservative government branches of the executive (say no more), Judicial (recent nominations and appointments) and legislature (pro-big business majority). And all that money that the movie industry has to sling at those branches with no checks and balances on lobbying activity and graft.

If it really does appear that we, on cdf, are a bunch of renegade pirates, then that will make legislation and court judgements against our digital fairuse rights seem justified. And one should never under estimate the power of the enforcement branch if all goes against us. The end of another American freedom. ...twilight of the gods.

it's part of the cdfreaks rles to not dicuss pirated copies. he even offered you some assistance with a warning, and you're so brash as to post a reply like this?!

"borrowing" and copying a disc from the distribution plant is pirating. assuming you plan on buying the dvd whn it comes out, that might make it a little better, but the advice he gave about us not being to help with a pirated copy is true.

a) it's against forum rules

b) we don't know what kind of media, what kind of burner, what kind of programs it was burned with so we can't really offer any insight as to what's wrong with it.

please go back and read the rules you agreed to when you signed up for the forum.

Since 2001, I spent $14,500 +/- on DVD movies. I like owning a movie that I like. I also like having the the artwork and cases of the original on my shelves. But I remember Barabas was out of print for years and unavailable at any online (even used at Amazon) or walk in store. I wanted it so bad I copied an original that wasn't mine. I have the same desire to copy "White Buffalo" (1977-Charles Bronson western) which is only available in region2 although I have not been able to get a hold of that one yet. There are a few others on my wish list that I would bend my ethics to obtain because I can't find them for sale.

You have used cracked CloneDVD software in the past and pirate a pirate's copies. I am sure I can't call b*llsh*t on you. But at least you are truthful about what you do as am I. But your truthfullness is not in question here; it's your ethical rationalizations about open piracy that is in question. And your open postings about it.

I'll post back any damn place I want, especially when I run into a little crooked little bugger like you, without even the good sense to use a little tact! I still think you are baiting and challenging the integrity of the members of this board with your open advocacy of piracy and that you might be an industry plant on a phishing expedition. Even if you are not, industry eyes watch these threads, I'm sure. Cdf is an honest forum board with standards of integrity.

Whisperer

Thanks to members for posting back while I was sleeping. I hereby and openly apologize for my aggression on this thread to both you and forum member imTrojan. But his blatantness got my dander up. You all have made very well mannered responses. Good morning from L.A.
