| Re: An idea for AnyDVD I understood what the original poster was saying immediately, and it makes perfect sense. I have no idea why people replied telling him to check his region, or telling him that AnyDVD "already removes it" when he's asking for information to be displayed in the status window. You guys must be very young if you don't recall the days of trying to copy commercial VHS tapes which had analog Macrovision on them. Analog Macrovision (as I understand it) writes some white spaces between frames. (If you've ever adjusted a vertical control on an old TV, this is the "black bar" you see on screen.) It was originally meant to mess up the automatic adjustment system most all VCR's have so that, on recording the video signal with Macrovision added, it would constantly try to adjust contrast and brightness to correct defects that weren't there. When playing back your recording, you would see a very annoying tell-tale "flickering" that would in most cases severely degrade the image. VCR manufacturers could have easily fixed this exploit, but they didn't to appease the studios. Very few people still record on VHS, but firmware on most modern DVD and hard disk recorders can recognize this Macrovision signature and disable recording of the video signal. My understanding is that there is a flag on many commercial DVD's to tell the DVD player to add analog Macrovision to the video signal output by the DVD player's analog video output jacks. On DVD's, analog Macrovision is not actually on the video on the disc itself, but added by the DVD player. AnyDVD automatically turns these flags off. The original poster is asking for the AnyDVD information window to display that the analog Macrovision flag was found, and it turned it off. As was previously mentioned, Macrovision RipGuard protection is something entirely different. |

| Re: An idea for AnyDVD Thats all well and good, and great information but if read the AnyDVD page that tells you what AnyDVD actually does , you would know that it already does this. Features

| Re: An idea for AnyDVD I hate jumping into threads like this, but, I'm going to give it my best cause I don't think you guys are understanding what it is he's asking for. First off, he KNOWS that it removes the APS protection. That isn't his request. His request is that IF AnyDVD detects and removes it, that it should STATE that in the information window. Nothing more, nothing less. APS has absolutely NOTHING to do with RipGuard. I hope this helps. |

You are correct, AnyDVD does not say a word if it removes APS for a very simple reason: At the moment the summary is written, AnyDVD does not know if a title set is protected by APS. (I don't think the whole disc has to be protected). When the summary is created, AnyDVD has finished analyzing and replacing the .ifo files. Now the AnyDVD application (the little fox) returns to idle state and the driver part takes over. APS is in the .vob files, and the driver will remove it on the fly if told so (APS settings in AnyDVD preferences). Of course there would be a solution - the driver could tell the application "hey, just removed some APS, update the status log". But honestly, this looks to me like a waste of time (and money). Simply not worth the trouble. Before doing this, I would rather implement "AnyCache and the reposition of DVD subtitles". ![]() | |
