Re: help with The Fog??

i have a 40gb harddrive. admittedly i dont know alot about computers (much less than i wish i did) but i'm told that's pretty decent. i dont have alot of stuff on here either. i dunno what the problem is.

and just to update, i got the fog copied. i tried several times with just dvdshrink to copy it and it never worked. finally after some guy told me "oh i just used dvdshrink" i thought... shoots, i should do it again. it worked. now i'm having the exact same problem with scarface. it's the same stuff all over again. first dvdshrink wont do it, so i copy it to a folder with any dvd, it doesnt copy all the files it should so i can't open the files through dvd shrink. then i tried to just copy it using dvd clone and tried nero (which, that method (nero) worked for harry potter goblet of fire)) and nothings working again. it's very frustrating.

and i'll go ahead and try it again and try to get the log for you.

Re: help with The Fog??

[quote=ripit@kristyclueless, if you have that little space, consider your computer ill equiped to burn dvd's. You have to have more space. I'm guessing you are working on a pretty small hard drive? You might have to upgrade (and it doesn't have to be expensive).
You do not have enough space to rip to your hard drive (copy 1 on your computer), then shrink with shrink) copy 2 on your hard drive (or maybe it was clone dvd that needed more space).
Solution, get another hard drive (you need it). Solution for now, use the free trial of anydvd, and nero or clonedvd2. Go directlly from the original through anydvd working in the background to nero or clonedvd. That will solve your lack of space problem. Instead of having two copys on the hard drive (your rip and the compression working files), you only have the compression files. Even if you only have one drive it will work, you can swap disks. Its kind of hard for us to help when the space limitations on your computer may be the problem.
With nero, you have a log (you want to use the "copy entire dvd-movie" option under start smart). If it fails for any reason, it will ask you if you want to save the log. You defanatlly want to save the log and know where it is being saved, so we can see it and help more. clonedvd would be easier to try but if it doesn't work, the nero log can tell us why it failed.
There were issues with the fog (when it first came out it there were many problems copying it). there were no macrovision movies then, it was arrcos (which can be tricky). Anydvd defanatlly kills arrcos, but with these recent evil copy guards, it depends on the burn program too. It is very hard (maybe imposible) for us to help unless you work out the hard drive issue. How big are your drives?

IMPORTANT!!! If you save your nero log, it contains your nero serial number near the top. Remove it!!! If you don't, I might have to give it to my friends (just kidding). Do not delete anything else. Info about your computer and the media you are using can often be the clue that we need (and it can be in the log).[/QUOTE]

Okay. So ... I tried to do what you said, I went through Nero and I clicked on DVD > Copy and Backup > Copy DVD. I only have one DVD d/r so I didnt know if it would work. It seemed like it might for a minute, cuz it copied it (I guess) but then it said it didnt have enough room on the blank disc for the movie (this is for Scarface now, by the way (which I had the same problems I had with The Fog)). Here's the log for that part.

I also tried something else. I also tried clicking DVD > Photo and Video > scroll over to Burn DVD-Video Files. It didnt work either. For that I ripped it through Any DVD and then tried to add those files. Here's the log for that.

I'm sure you've guessed that these logs mean nothing to me. I have no idea what they mean or say. I'm hoping that you can help me with this. Thanks for trying thus far.

Re: help with The Fog??

The copy dvd function that you used the first time would have worked if the movie was small enought to fit, but since most are not, you need to compress the dual layer disk to fit a single layer disk (using nero recode). Go to nero start smart, select dvd at the top, go to copy and backup, then "copy entire dvd-video". That will open nero recode, the program you want (you might see some similarities to shrink as both programs were written by the same person, though nero recode has been updated more). Try that and tell what problems you have/post the log.

i tried to do what you said. i opened up nero, clicked on dvd at the top, went to copy and backup, i didnt see "copy entire dvd-video" but i saw "copy dvd", figuring it was close enough i was gonna click on it but it wants to open it with nero express, not recode. so, i went to see if i needed any updates, which i did, so i got 'em .... still dont have recode. i figured i must be missing something cuz i'm still sick and i'm still so tired so i had someone else look at it and try to get recode. still didnt work. is there something we're missing?

I've had that happen before, but I was still able to open the files through DVD Shrink and burn them without a problem. This time when I try to open the files it says it can't find the VIDEO_TS.VOB. I'm new to all this so I dont even know what that means. Help? Please? Thanks in advance.

P.S. - I should mention that everytime it's happened (I've tried to redo it like three times so far, I think) each time it processes a little bit more. It would make more sense to me if it just stopped at the same place everytime. I still would have no clue what to do ... but at least it would seem like it's just trouble spot, I guess.
Kristy, I haven't waded through ALL the verbiage in this thread, but I experienced the same problem when -- just for the heck of it -- tried to copy all the files on my DVD of "Memories of a Geisha" via AnyDVD. When I attempted to open the movie in Shrink, I received the same message as you. So, with AnyDVD running, I manually (Windows Explorer) copied VIDEO_TS.VOB from the disc to the folder containing the partially copied files. Worked like a charm! For some reason, AnyDVD's copy-to-hard-drive method leaves out a few files -- perhaps it's related to copy protection.

But in lieu of that method, I'd find DVD Decryptor (extinct but do a search for it...a free program) and in combo with AnyDVD, it'll rip any of your backups.

Re: help with The Fog??

Hi Kristy...I've had my own problems with The Fog but I did get it ripped. I use AnyDVD running in the background and DvDshrink. Like posted above if you have disk space problems that needs to be corrected first. But may I put in my 2 cents. I only have the one drive so I can't go disk to disk. First off way back I created a folder on my c:drive and named it Back_up. Not to offend you but I'm telling from scratch. Go to My Computer...select c:drive..
right click and select New...pick folder and name it whatever you want. Ok, that out of the way put in your movie in your dvd drive. Open shrink and it may take a minute but click ok when it detects The Fog. Navigate to where it shows destination folder and browse to the folder you created on your c:drive. Now you know for sure where your movies are. I only copy the main title and no menus so go to reauthor and drag the main movie title over to the box on the left. Go back to compression and pick your language and audio. The less you have checked the better the compression. Now click Back-Up. Wait for it to rip ...insert a blank disc and your done. On my system this takes about 15 minutes total using an 8x disc.
Like stated in other post in here, everyones systems are different and so our results will be somewhat different. I have my own post in this forum about The Fog if you want to see other problems. I hope this helps and good luck......HAPPY BURNING

i copied did some of that, except i left the menus in. i tried to copy it with dvdshrink like i normally would but it wouldnt burn for whatever reason. i ended up having to burn it through nero. it didnt come out right. the menu is all janky and doesnt work. i dunno. im trying something else now, maybe if i leave the menu out it'll be alright.

But in lieu of that method, I'd find DVD Decryptor (extinct but do a search for it...a free program) and in combo with AnyDVD, it'll rip any of your backups.
how did you do that? I mean, how did you manually copy VIDEO_TB.VOB from the disc to the folder containly the partially copied files? I dont know alot about this stuff.

I think I might have tried Decryptor but I dont remember at this point. I've tried everything I can think of and so far nothing works out for me

Right click the drive containing the disk. Click explore. go into the VIDEO_TS folder, find the file, and copy it, same you would any file on your hard drive. Right click, copy, then find the destination directory and paste.

Try using IMGburn. I know it's just something else to download but I use it myself all the time. It's a great little burn engine. I'm just not that fond of Nero. To each his own I guess.

Re: help with The Fog??

IMGburn is actually a great program. I would sugest that you not only download it, but dvd decryptor too if you you can find the final version of it (macrovision shut them down so its not officially avalable anymore). Using these two programs is the best way to burn dual layer but they are good for a lot more than that. Even though dvd dycryptor hasn't been updated in a while, it still works great and I have found that sometimes alone, and sometimes in combination with anydvd, dvd decryptor can sometimes get past these newer problem movies just fine. Fyi image burn is written by the same person that wrote dvd decryptor and they are designed to work well together. imgburn doesn't have ripping capabilittes due to the macrovision thing though (which is why dvd decryptor is usefull). Another thing about those two programs (someone corect me if I am wrong here), they do not leave anything running in the background so there really isn't much risk of it conflicting and messing other programs up. They are only runnig when you run them and are using them.

Personally, I think nero is well worth having (sometimes nero has its advantages, sometimes imgburn/decryptor has its advntages, it depends on what you are doing). Both are usefull tools. I personally would recomend against nero 7 though (too new and way too buggy), but nero 6 works quite well for many tasks. With these newer problem movies, sometimes its just a matter of trying diffrent programs till you find one that works. fyi imgburn cannot compress (so far as I know) so you still have to use shrink or nero or clone dvd or something like that to get to a single layer disk. Using dvd decryptor and then trying these programs might be worth it though (try with anydvd running, and without it running, see if either works).

If all else fails, and hopefully I won't get in trouble for sugesting this, if you own the movie, try renting it and copy the rental for a backup. It is ilegal (and why I hope I don't get into trouble for mentioning it), but after all, you do own an original copy of it, and maybe something along the lines of mastering errors or poor quality of the original might have something to do with the problem. alternatively, if you are within the time frame that you can still exchange at the place of purchase, that might be worth a try. Mastering errors and or poor quality pressed originals is more common than you might think.

Re: help with The Fog??

There is a newer version of AnyDVD out now. V5.9.5.3. If you bought it I would go ahead and update. You didn't state if yours was a trial version or not. Not that it would make a difference but I noticed you have Win. XP Pro Ser. Pack1. I would suggest updating to the latest service pack. I use 2000 pro but I'm sure there is at least a sp2 for xp. I think you mentioned something about low disc space. If you navigate to MY Computer, right click on your c:drive, select properties, how much free space do you have? I'm just trying to get a clearer picture.

Re: help with The Fog??

okay everyone, sorry it's taken me a while to respond to ya'll. i've been out of town. i had to go see my favorite rollerderby team whoop butt in austin. just to update, i got the movie copied. i ended up using dvd decrypter in combination with dvd shrink and it was miraculous. i swear there were golden beams coming out of the sky and angels sung. it was awesome, however not as awesome as the derby. heh. anyway, thanks for all the advice and trying to help and all that jazz. i'm sure i'll need help later and i know i can count on ya'll. thanks again!
