Im having a problem with GANTZ Region4, Disk 5, VTS_02_5.VOB.

Im on my second physical copy of it and cannot get past a particular spot without errors (see log below). My drives (liteon dvd-rom and pioneer dvr-106) both come up with read errors trying to copy that file, from that position.

Tried Anydvd 5.9.4.1, Dvd decrypter, dvd fab decrypter 2.9.7.2, pcgedit with PSL plugins (reports no bad sector protection found), voblanker, anydvd ripper, fixvts - all error on the same file..

My standalone player (pioneer 676a) also skips about 10 seconds on the same spot.

Discs are clean - no phsycally obivious (by eye) defects/marks.

Im strongly suspecting a mastering/phsyical error (pretty damn severe too) on this title - is anyone able to verify or suggest any alternative way to backup this title?

The last line error repeats. I had anydvd running whilst using dvddecrypter - however turning off structure protection etc (configuring to run with anydvd) yields the same results.

Don't use decrypter to rip (and I would uninstall dvd fab decrypt; I consider that program to be completely useless, especially if you own anydvd). Right click the fox on your toolbar. Select "rip video-dvd to harddisk".

Sorry, I missed that; I skimmed your post too fast. If your pioneer 676a is failing with the original, it's probably, as you say, a mastering error (especially since both your standalone player and your optical drives are having problems reading this disc); and unfortunately, there's not much you can do other than try to get a replacement that works properly (you mentioned this is your second copy; I guess they produced a bad batch of discs; it happens . . .).

Does the original disc playback alright in your computer? If not (given the original doesn't work in your pioneer 676a either), this disc is bad.

I would get the 21 day free trial of Elby's CloneDVD2 and try this movie. It is better at structural manufacturing "defects" purposely mastered into the DVD original as a protection scheme. They play fine on your player but the technique messes up many backup softwares.

If standalone dvd players can't play back the original disc properly, something is wrong with it.

Clone is just better than most at puposeful mastering errors. Althought the latest is Version 2.8.9.2, two updates ago addressed what might be Mr Bitey's issue. ... "might".

My point is this defect wasn't created on purpose since it appears that standalone dvd players are unable to play the original disc without skipping. I suppose Clonedvd2 is worth a shot with Anydvd running in the background (since Clonedvd2 now allows up to 20 read re-retries for scratched discs), but I wouldn't hold my breath (and even if a rip were created from this faulty disc, I wouldn't trust that the rip would be good as one produced from a perfectly working original disc). As I stated before, there's not much you can do other than try to get a replacement that works properly.

Ya, Ok ... I missed this in re-reading the OP.Mr Bitey,Using a flourescent desk lamp light, rather than tungston lamps or daylight, shows up flaws in the data layer better. You should be able to get your money back from the retail store.

if the standalone skips that part on playback then you're screwed. you can't back something up that doesn't play correctly.

since it's unlikely that the same store will have a different (maybe unaffected) batch of discs...not to mention that they're probably sick of exchanging discs for you, I'd see if you can get anywhere with the company.

maybe at least calling and bitching will make you feel better about it haha.

Thanks for the responses guys.. Ive been running dvd decrypter overnight on it with retries set to 0 and ignore read errors - its upto about 3000 read errors and has only got about 6 meg furhter (sigh). Think i'll just take it back and import an Region 1 version rather than wasting time trying to get a 'good' copy locally.

Whisperer1, thanks for the advice re: clonedvd2 - i'll grab the trial version a bit later and see if it can work some magic (or at least skip over the bad area quicker - dvd decrypter is reading in 2Kb chunks)..

Update:
After about 12 hours and over 3300 read errors, I seem to have a good copy. The problem area appears to be right on the transition between a scene and im not seeing any actual missing footage when played back on my PC.

I put the disc back in my standalone player and the problem is at 81:28, the player skips to 81:38 and seems to just cut the starting second (or two) off the new scene - my PC copy appears to have the scene. I havent played it back on my home theater yet so I cant see if the dolby-digital stream is broken in the problem area.

This all seems a bit suss to me..

Slysoft: Worth you guys checking the IFO's ? - although one would think the IFO's would avoid the bad sectors and not exhibit the problem on a standalone - I think i'll try another standalone and see.

Ive kept the log if thats of any use to anyone (might be worth making a PSL list up if anyone else has issues with this disc).

While I do not respresent Slysoft, the logical response is if the original cannot be played back on a standalone player without skipping, the answer is no (there's no reason to be sending IFOs if the original disc is damaged in some manner). The evidence points to the strong likelyhood that your original disc is faulty, which is why you are getting read errors. This is confirmed by the skipping in your standalone player in conjunction with the crazy amount of time it took for your drive to finally rip the disc. It's possible your copy is good (and if so, it's better than your original disc), but if I were you I would be still be trying to obtain a good original. Good luck

Im strongly agreeing, however some of the sony accros discs dont play properly in some standalones either.. Oh well.. back it goes - not worth wasting anymore time over

If so, that's an anomaly (at least, the playback issue is not intentional) and still doesn't represent a problem on Anydvd's end. Moreover, given that you were able to eventually rip the disc, this suggests Anydvd worked (provided it was running in the background while you were ripping the disc), despite the original disc being damaged.
