Try redoing it and output the files to the hard drive instead of burning them directly in CloneDVD. See if those files will play in a DVD player application off the hard drive. That will rule out any media issues.

I tried that and the HD image worked. I clipped the first three seconds off the "bad disk". Reburned the new image. That worked! (See my edit above.) I burned the new image with the same media (Verbatim DVD+R5 8X) as the first so I don't think it's the media.

Re: Dark Water

Fascinating. Chalk that one up to cosmic rays. LOL. I use Verbatim + media as well and have never had a problem with it, but, bad burns do occasionally happen. At least you got it working that's the important part.

Re: Dark Water

Just to expand on Whisperer1's comments re: compression and large digital TVs. Although I cannot see much, if any, difference between a movie compressed by 20% and one not compressed at all on a 32" standard definition CRT, I'm assuming my new 56" 1080P Toshiba which will be delivered in three days .. WOOOOOOHOOOOOOO! ... WILL all-too-obviously highlight the deficiencies in the compressed picture.

So my rule of thumb the past couple of years while I've been building my library of Netflix 'backups' .. has been to copy bit-for-bit across two DVDs if necessary, unless (1) I could squeeze it onto one blank with maybe no more than a 5-8% compression (although Whisperer1 tells me that might have been a mistake :-() or (2) it is just some movie that I really don't care that the PQ is 100% ... oh say some dumb comedy or some older black and white movie where the visuals don't have the same 'pop' anyway.

Oh and any movie with Scarlett Johannson ALWAYS gets the 100% treatment :-) Even that dog "The Island" ...

And with high quality blanks for $0.30 or whatever on sale, I don't mind getting up halfway through a movie to change disks ... geesh ...

Oh and I'm given to understand that the absolute 'best' way to deliver a quality DVD picture to the new HD sets, is via an 'upscaling' DVD player with HDMI out ... so I invested modestly in a new DVD player as well ...

just thought I'd let you know that this is illegal, and we'd appreciate it if you didn't discuss it on the forum as per the rules you agreed to when you signed up here.

Re: Dark Water

So sorry didn't realize it was illegal and I won't repeat anything like that again. However it is an interesting question whether or not it IS illegal in Toronto (where I live ... actually using a Canadian version of N******S) or in many other non-American juridictions. This IS a forum for worldwide users, right? Not just Americans?

ther'es nothing wrong with netflix, but Im pretty sure that burning commercial titles that you don't own is illegal in most countries.

Re: Dark Water

It's far from clear it is illegal in Canada (and I'm guessing other countries as well). It is 100% legal here, and in the US, to "time-shift" programs off TV ... movies included. Time-shifting for personal use only, rental VHS movies was a grey area, as is time-shifting any DVD rental. For sure if you make a DVD copy then try to sell it or profit from it ... that's illegal. But time-shifting for personal use ... I would take to court and win :-)

Anyway won't mention again. Happy New Year.

Re: Dark Water

dougb,
Well, old boy, since you've said what you are doing, said what city and country you live in, and expounded a somewhat self serving synopsis of what you think is legal and not legal ... I think you can expect a knock at your door soon. I'm a little short of cash, due to the holidays, so I can't bail you out. But maybe some of the other cdf members can pitch in.

When you go to court, hire a good lawyer. Wear a suit and tie, not your pirate gear and DO NOT, under any circumstances, defend yourself! I don't think they let you get netflix movies in prison.

Best regards,
Whisperer

Just havin a little fun with you dougb!

Re: Dark Water

I ripped Dark Water with AnyDvd 5.8.1.1 and CloneDVD2 2.5.4.3. Have it on HD at 4.22 GB so there is no need to compress it. I just have the movie with english. No menus etc. but I got 100% quality. I assume it will burn just fine. It did burn just fine on ProdiscF02 media at 16X.

Doesnt Slysoft not email you with the details about all the new versions releases. They do for me, i think its a realy nice gesture.
You should check your spam box as they may be going there.

AnyDVD has an automatic update check, which will inform you about new versions. It is enabled by default. You must have disabled it. Your fault.
