And a big thanks to you because now others will know how effective the "Write Existing Data" method is. I don't know for sure if this is the only reason that the method was writen into the CloneDVD software but it SURE does resolve many ripping errors such as:

video_TS/vts_XX_X.vob:read error

video_TS/vts_XX_X.vob XX tcsector reader

video_TS/vts_XX_X.vob:read error
data error (cyclic redundancy check)

etc, etc

due to original manufacturing defects, scratches, dings, flaws etc

Thanks again and best regards,

Yes, the Audio Folder is just a legacy from the early days of DVD authoring. Don't know why they still include it on modern originals. You don't need it to get a successful backup. Just the entire Video_TS folder.

Unless you have alot of conflicts on your machine or programs popping into execution etc, I don't think you have to shut everything down. But you know your machine best. I built a stand alone (no web connection) dedicated box (with only my few beloved backup programs) which I use for the sole purpose of protecting my purchase-investment in DVD movies. So I don't experience conflicts.

AnyDVD has no fuction during the burning stage, the movie was decrypted as it was copied to your HDD already. It neither hurts not helps to have it running during the burn.

I just wanted to say one more thing I forgot to mention. After I used the windows method to get it to my hard drive I did not use the "Write Existing Data" method it would not let me (clonedvd). It told me to use the other two options so I used movie only with only the the english 5.1channel. Also I have read in so many places that things like antivirusus, firewalls, etc... can cause your media to freeze skip things of that nature. In witch I have incountered. And all I use is Tys from supermedia store and burn at 2x speed. These are the things that give me perfect results. So usually disable mine and a few other things I wont need to burn movies. Anyways sorry I did not mention this before whisperer1 and thanks again.

Re: The Constant Gardner R1 Widescreen

CloneDVD2 + AnyDVD did the trick first time for me with no issues.

i just wanted to say that any time i encountered a disc read error in CloneDVD2 (TC, Cyclic..etc), i was never able to copy the files to the HD as a workaround...ever

i have backed up several hundred discs and have come across this issue dozens of times - very annoying trying to take back an X-Files season and wanting the store to open and only swap the one disc, for fear of getting another box set with a different disc bad (happened to me 3 times with Fellowship of the Ring)

so i was wondering what your success rate on average was with this method?, as mine is zero

Re: The Constant Gardner R1 Widescreen

MensaBoy322,
My success rate has been 100%. But it only happened perhaps 4-6 times out of 2000. If it has happened to you "dozens" of times, you have a whole other problem. Fellowship of the Ring was a breeze.

Slow down your rips by setting AnyDVD to "Slow and Quiet" for your ripping drive. If that doesn't work do the same for your burning drive and rip from the burner rather than your ripping drive. Writer drives are optimized for burning not ripping and are inherently slower at ripping than a DVD-ROM drive no matter what the manufacturer's specs say.

It is my belief that manufacturing defects are rare. Many posters believe otherwise, but I think it is a "easy avenue" cop out. A high percentage of disk exchanges get home and still the replacement won't copy for a whole other reason other than defects. Then they use the write existing data method and presto it works. Probably the first disk would have worked too.

Also, you seem to state that these are purchased, new disks. If there is a possibility that you are getting the originals from another source (for heaven's sake don't state it) and they are scratched, of course that is a big issue when it comes to ripping.

Re: The Constant Gardner R1 Widescreen

Whisperer,

some are pressed DVDs and some are not, take the burned discs out of the equation and i would guess that leaves 6 or so out of 400+

in all cases an attempt was made to rip from the burner after the combo drive failed, and in all cases the failure occured in the same VOB, AND in all cases an attempt to copy that VOB to the HD failed with a cyclic error

in all cases but one the first replacement of the disc from the retailer solved the issue

i just tried to rip the "but one" disc that i couldnt back up(or replace) before - and it went through perfectly

i have since replaced both drives (formerly a Sony CRX320E combo and a Memorex +/-16x DL (rebadged 3520 i beleive)) with an NEC 3550A and a LiteON 1693S, and havent had a read error while ripping a pressed DVD - so perhaps my issues with it are history

as for the burned DVDs that still dont rip (tried a couple anyway) i would guess that they are indeed errors on the disc i wont be able to fix

You probably deleted or damaged the contents of the "eraser" directory in the CloneDVD program directory. Reinstall CloneDVD, this will solve the problem.

Re: The Constant Gardner R1 Widescreen

I just wanted to say that Ive also successfully used AnyDVD and Windows Explorer to copy Constant Gardner to my HD then shrink it with CloneDVD2. It was seemingly stuck the first time around, but after spotting the file causing most of the problems (VTS_01_6 in my case), I tried ripping it by itself, which took awhile but worked great. Then I ripped the rest of the DVD the same way minus the one file. Most of my other shrink programs work too now that its been ripped to the HD.

I just wanted to thank Whisperer for all of the info in this thread, its quite a valuable resource. I've copied around 300+ dvd's, and I still learned quite a lot reading through this thread. So in closing thank you.
