beginner help with copying please!

hi...i am totally new to this and have just started a free trial dvd rental thingy. before my first dvds arrive i want to make sure i have what i need software wise to copy most recent dvds (friend who has been doing it for a while said new ones they are getting sent through are red). I also want someone to WALK me through what i need to do from start to finish. i am not computer literate really and as we have just got a new laptop i dont want to mess it up by screwing things up that i dont understand.

so can someone tell me what i need exactly to make this job as easy as possible, then tell me how to do it and i guess also tell me what sort of programs that may be preloaded onto my laptop i need to disable. (have seen talk of anti virus stuff and roxio- dont even know what second one does...)

anyone patient enough to guide a novice??

thanks!!

Wow. Uhh...

Ok, step 1: Read the forum rules, and realize that renting DVD's with the express intention of copying them is illegal and we won't discuss it with you?

We wouldn't believe you at this point.

Are you a movie or rental industry plant or with law enforcement of some kind trying to collect evidence on people who would help a pirate? You will find we don't help pirates at cdf.

Gee ... golly ... Dduuuhhh!

Or are you just so stupid that you think you can openly get help with a crime on a public forum?

In either case ... Aloha!

I suggest you browse thru prior posts. You will find all you need there. Use the "search" feature for something specific, it has all been answered before. Since you started out asking about illegal activity, you may not get much help in this thread.

And, according to the letter of the law, you CANNOT legally make copies of even your own DVDs as you have to violate the digital copy protection and THAT makes it illegal to do.

halpos should check on the laws where he/she lives to determine what activities are legal regarding backing up his/her legitimately owned entertainment media for personal use. Even then it may not be all that clear.
If you subscribe to what people from the mpaa and riaa say/believe - they have the right to do anything destructive to any computer you stick one of their products in, and you should send them some money every time you hear, see or remember something from a cd or dvd . . .
