| Re: AnyDVD 6.1.6.7 Discussion Thread I updated yesterday both AnyDVD as well as CloneDVD and also the latest DivX Pro Pacakge. After the required reboots etc after so many programs are updated I usually run Check Disk followed by running an Offline Defrag with Perfect Disk. To my surprise a scheduled on a reboot Check Disk on my "C" Drive where XP w/SP2 is installed never happened? So I decided to run the offine defrag that Perfect Disk uses and what do you know for the 1rst time ever Perfect Disk reported that it was unable to run an offline defrag because of a driver conflict that caused the volume to be locked? Trouble shooting I decided to boot into safe mode and then schedule a Check Disk. The reboot from safe mode to safe mode and Check Disk worked ---> obviously whatever driver was locking the volume never loaded in safe mode and thus did not interfere with running Check Disk. After booting into normal mode I tested running an offline defrag with Perfect Disk this time choosing to force any open handles closed beforehand. The offline defrag completed successfully but in another attempt to do a Check Disk from within XP's normal mode it fails. So either AnyDVD or CloneDVD or the latest DivX Pro package is the culprit here? Since the day before I ran Check Disk as well as an offline defrag with Perfect Disk without a hitch. I am thinking that maybe the fix for Vista's UAC that was incorporated in the latest build of AnyDVD maybe has issues with XP's User Profiles? About the only other tool I can think of to isolate the offender would be to install MS's UPH Clean and try to determine which drivers are not unloading from the user profile that are also causing the volume to be locked since my event log does not indicate any indication of problems with a profile being unloaded. Sysinternals Process Explorer does not reveal any processes running that are different then before updating these programs. So it seems to point to a profile issue? Anybody else running XP experiencing a failed Check Disk due to a locked volume? Saphire

| Re: AnyDVD 6.1.6.7 Discussion Thread I just completed a format and re-installation severals hours ago for the exact same reason. I started after midnight and broke at 3 o AM. Resumed this morning at 7:00 AM.Although I also did upgrades of AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 yesterday, I cannot confirm that this issue was attributed to the upgrades. Yet it is certainly intriguing that we have so many parameters in common. All other partitions would complete an Offline Defrag and Chkdsk was functional on all partitions except the C:\ partition. Despite investing several hours on the issue, no solution was found.

| Re: AnyDVD 6.1.6.7 Discussion Thread ....So far my "C" drive which is a RAID-0 on the VIA VT8237 Controller is still useable so I have decided not to do a fresh install of XP. Hoping that Slysoft will update AnyDVD and/or Clone DVD and correct the locked volume issue. I don't think that the DivX package update has anything to do with it. Esp in light of the fact that the UAC issue in Vista was the rationale behind the recent two updates for AnyDVD I suspect that more and more software is going to have to be separated one version for Vista and another version for Win2003/XP/W2K simply because Vista is....for lack of a better word "a different animal". Also Similar to your findings my "storage" RAID-0 on the Promise Controller as well as my other "storage" 2 SATA's in USB enclosures do not suffer any volume lock and are thus unaffected and running Check Disk or for that matter an MFT defrag with Perfect Disk on-line because they are non-OS drives Saphire

| Re: AnyDVD 6.1.6.7 Discussion Thread Going back to .6.5 solved the problem below; although 6.6 hadn't given any problems previously that i am aware of. .6.7 is also causing problems on my Win 98 SE machine which has never had issues with Any DVD before. I've been using Anydvd with no problem on Win 98 SE for quite awhile. I installed 6.1.6.7 & upon inserting any disc I got a kernal access error & also a pc crash. It was repeatable with any disc. I tried installing 6.1.6.6 over the top of 6.7. It said my trial was up! I uninstalled 6.7 & reinstalled 6.6. Any DVD registration is back to normal. However, 6.6 is also now crashing (it no longer crashes the pc, just AnyDVD). I even tried restoring to a registry back up from before the 6.7 install but still have the same problem. Here is the current windows error message: ANYDVD caused a general protection fault in module ANYDVD.EXE at 0187:004f6811. "Tragic" was in reference to the intrusive nature of the software. What is "tragic" is software with a hidden agenda, configured for profitabily instead of functionality. I don't need applications reconfiguring the core settings of my Operating System. I don't believe this is a requirement for the task of DVD back ups. It has long been my policy to discontinue the use of any application that is overbearing and intrusive. All I need is an application that facilitates the back up of DVDs that I own. With the infrequency with which this occurs, it would be more prudent to replace the DVD at $13 - $25 instead of laboring for countless man hours restoring my system to a state of my personal preferrence after it has been hosed by some rogue application. As a point of information for those who were unfortunate enough to experience this issue, Slysoft/Elaborate Bytes has concluded that the issue was created by the release of CloneDVD 2.9.1.0. As such, they have issued a new release, 2.9.1.1 which is supposed to rectify the issue. I think it is time that I re-evaluate my relationship with Slysoft in reference to the continued use of these software applications. I cannot continue to support rogue applications. There are other similar applications without the intrusive configurations that i may need to exploit instead.

I have upgraded to CloneDVD 2.9.1.1 and am happy to report that this update does indeed fix the locked volume issue that affected at least XP and that once again Check Disk functions normally without resorting to a safe boot as well as in my case, an offline or boot time defragmentation that Perfect Disk has. I hope that the folks at Slysoft will post an update to AnyDVD pronto! that incorporates the updated ElbyCDIO driver that was the "culprit" behind this locked volume issue in XP for those end-users that don't also have CloneDVD. ...And BEFORE they release any more updates for both CloneDVD or AnyDVD that they fully "beta" test them on sytems besides Vista for those of us that are holding off on switching to Vista for reasons that are tooo long to list here SaphireX
