How is that crude? Might have overdone the alliteration a bit, but that's all.

Thanks rolling56. I do have a pretty strong view about this price hike and am interested in the discussion.

And to alan1476 - I found this link on doom9.

blutach do you own any of SS products or see a future in purchasing from them?

No, I don't; and no I won't be at current and especially future prices.

See earlier in the thread (where's that "shame on me" emoticon when I need it?)

BLutach
You really have me and maybe others confused
You don't own and it seems you don't intend to own any SS products, nor do you like them, yet here you are, again.
So really none of you arguments hold water this time around
You certanily are not an affected customer or potential customer
Right?

Its like me saying I don't smoke, but get mad if the price of cigarettes goes up

In fact you should be happy since you see nothing but doom for SS beacuse of the price change , and if they do it to themselves all the better
Heh?
Regards to you

@zaq

Everybody who doesn't own something is a potential customer.

And just because I don't intend to buy the product, doesn't mean I don't have an opinion on this price hike and the broader ramifications of it, nor does it mean I am not permitted to state those opinions politely on this forum (as rolling56 has pointed out - thank you).

I agree, Blu, your opinion is just as valid as anyone else's on this topic. Anyone who says otherwise is COMPLETELY wrong. I don't think you've handled yourself in any manner for which you should be ashamed in this thread. You've stated your opinion and given reasons why you feel that way. That's completely valid. I also agree that the price increase is probably going to hurt Slysoft in the end. That sucks, but, that is their choice to make. To think that this price increase WON'T have an effect on sales is naive.

I would have to agree with you I think. Being caught is not a sign of not being clever, more unlucky. Besides, many people feel that LUK and the author of R4M didn't do anything wrong. I am one of those people. They provided a tool that allowed for fair use backups of legally purchased media. That, apparently, is bad because some people might use that to make backups of media they did not legally purchase. The logic doesn't fit there, either, I think.

Rolling, that's problematic if you're dealing with HD media, however. There is no "other app" at the moment that will work on the latest titles, much less on BD+. If they go under, I will not be able to backup my discs anymore and that will make me cry. I like having them on my HTPC so I can just mount an image and watch my movie. Lazy? You betchya!

Same here Rolling I own just about all of them right now.

Oh it will but what makes me start to wonder is the fact of the lifetime of free updates, how's this price hike going to affect that? I own all of Slysoft's apps and love them dearly but also still wonder what about the future too. When something is a great product one hates to see it gone.

I agree with you, my take is that a tool to backup HD is a lot more valuable than a tool to backup regular DVDs. The pricing should probably reflect that. I don't own any HD discs, and don't plan to in the immediate future, so paying big dollars for something that I won't use does not make much sense to me at this point...

I understand that totally SamuriHL. But it's not up to us what they are going to do. By the way they haven't gone under anywhere that i know of yet

I know people are upset but they will do what they want to and we'll just have to wait.

Sorry, I dont agree. Poor planning is not clever. I never mentioned LUK, when he had his problems noone knew what lengths authoritys would go to. I respect his new decisions and love his program. On the other hand , I guess the author of Ripit4me did not learn from others mistakes, that is not clever or smart. The program was just a compilation of other peoples work. Sorry I don't agree, bad decisions were made and the program paid the price. Its sad.

jeanl or LUK! know how to write s/w so we have to wait for something available. More power to you guys and whomever else. But like Alan said learn from others mistakes and we all benefit.

Re: Anybody note the intended price change after Jan 1/08 = buy licenses fast and use X_mas 20% off also

I'm not sure you understand the technology of RipIt4Me alan to make such a statement. And this thread is about SS's prices.

Look, folks, the long and short of it is this:

1. Prices are going up by 47% (outrageous IMHO)

2. SS is banking that sales volumes won't go down by more than 32% (1 - 1/1.47) and they'll be ahead. If they go down by say 25%, then they have gained a net 10% in revenue (more or less) and the champagne starts flowing in St Johns. If they go down by 35%, they are behind by about 4.5% and more "bargain discounts" begin to flow and the SS marketing director is looking for a new job.

In a market that is largely insular (it really focuses on a single pastime and can't be expanded to new areas), they risk a lot with this pricing decision - especially given there are so many competitors around at (what will be) vastly lower price points.

Regards

My turn to have to disagree with you! I don't know where you get the info that the program was just a compilation of other people's work. Stating this as a fact does not make it a fact! In fact, the program appeared to do a lot more than simply call decrypter and fixvts, all you needed to do was read the log to figure that one out... But that entire point is now moot... BTW, judging from what happens in general in such cases, I would guess that it was not just the program that paid the price!

Alan, I seriously have to respectfully disagree with you on this point. R4M was *FAR* more than a compilation of other people's work. I know you probably didn't mean any disrespect to the R4M program, but, the author should be given credit where it's due. And on R4M, the work they did was far more than was obvious.

That's an extremely true, and VERY unfortunate statement. We all need to remember that there are two sides to this issue...people who wish to restore fair use rights by providing tools to backup media and those who wish to destroy them. NOT kuel.

I just cannot not find any logic or sense of his posts/opinions in this thread,

This thread on a simple price notification and a good oppurtunity to take advantage of a sale is quickly going down hill.
and wasn'tt meant to be a primer on the economics of elasticity
