I'm not trying to prove anything but without media codes and a problem description your post is nothing other than trolling. If you care to ask anybody here I don't hide from problems, I look to get them documented so we can solve them.

EDIT: I see some posts in the scans thread, is this what you are referring to?

If you want my help, you need to post your problem concisely and with lots of detail so I can communicate with our engineers and find a cause and therefore a solution.

Re: Suggestions and Feedback for Pioneer

With all due respect sverkalo You had this same problem with your new Samsung drive and then, members tried to explain the problem was your media. You asked for some advice on which drive might burn these discs well. I recommended the Pioneer 112 series. If the 112 series can't burn these discs with good quality then nothing else will.

off topic:

Is TY that hard to find in some parts of our big blue marble or are people just to cheap to buy them? Both?

@sverkalo are you using recommended media id's?

TY's are easy to get here but more expensive, plus we have a problem with fake TY in the wrong stores. People smart enough to buy from the distributor always get the right stuff.

Re: Suggestions and Feedback for Pioneer

I'd just like to say thanks to the guys and girls(?) at Pioneer. This is the first time I've ever owned a Pioneer drive and I'm really happy with it. The latest firmware update helped improve a lot of my burns too.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks Feena, the latest fw update is a very important one and people should update immediately if they are not using it now.

I agree. I'm very happy with my new DVR-112D (build date April 2007 ) with the latest firmware. For me quality is more important than speed.
I'd like to see only 16x reading speed for SL discs but I think it's not possible in this model.

I insist to that and I call everyone who made insulting comments to take them back. You can see my next tests to excellent media as Maxell (T03) which could be really excellent to be spoiled with some spikes that comes from nowhere.

Yes, @12X is safe, and @8X show fantastic burns with +R media in the 112/212 drives.

But as for the @16X (and faster) burns of +R, there is indeed an issue, in the form of re-linking PIF peaks that do have an impact on reading in some drives. You asked for a more documented report of the issue, I think this is a good place to start.. :http://club.cdfreaks.com/f87/pioneer...gnored-226064/

-R media burning is not affected or so it seems.

I'm pretty sure that this issue can be adressed with a firmware tweaking, but I'm no techie so I can be wrong of course.

It would be more logic and easier to edit cdspeed (settings) instead.

Re: Suggestions and Feedback for Pioneer

Hello Brad,

It would be really nice if Pioneer would release a Linux version of firmware updates, or at least a self booting version which could be run from a cd or flash drive without an operating system. I am about to do a pc upgrade and go completely windowless, Ubuntu only, but there is the problem that I have to waste disk space on carrying a Win XP installation just to upgrade the DVD burner firmware, or do an installation just for this purpose. It really is a major hassle.
What is the possibility of doing this? The Linux community is screaming out for this sort of support, and think of the kudos and the extra sales which would accompany such a move! Or perhaps be really radical and go Open Source with your firmware..........

Sorry, the answer for this is the same as the answer for Mac. We are only set up to develop, certify and support the Windows platform which makes up the most vast majority of our client base.

Re: Suggestions and Feedback for Pioneer

Redohare:

I understand your frustration. I too think it's inexcusable not to support Linux, esp. considering porting the code for the flash update program would probably be trivial.

One thing you can try as a workaround, is to get someone with a Windows machine to download the flasher executable, then have them run just the extraction part of the process on their Windows machine. IIRC, the resulting files in a folder off the root of C: are executable from within DOS. If so, that would mean you could at least boot using just a DOS floppy and execute the update from there. Can anyone confirm this?

Sorry, I fail to see how its "inexcusable". Our drives are a mass market product. Linux users would make up a tiny percentage of our users, and there's not going to be any increase in sales if we did have a Linux flasher. People will just buy the cheapest drive regardless.

If a linux outlet wanted to become an OEM and offer our drives then they could be given the tools to make their own flasher but they are then taking on the responsibility for bricking every drive they come into contact with if they make a mistake.

You guys claim making a flasher is trivial, the process to qualify and certify the flasher before release is actually quite exhaustive and takes into a whole lot of variables to make sure we don't make a mis-step, and a Linux flasher is not going to deliver us any tangible benefits on what will be a significant and ongoing investment.

Re: Suggestions and Feedback for Pioneer

There would be a small point to nag about "no support" maybe if Pioneer flashers only would work under windows..........

I really wonder why someone using Linux could post such lines...

I don't know what you mean Chef?

For those that do run Linux, I'd be interested to see if you can run XP under Wine and flash, I suspect it should work....

Re: Suggestions and Feedback for Pioneer

Hi Brad,

what I meant is: who has already a x86 architecture computer could easily make a bootable disk, even on a usb-stick, put also flasher & firmware on it, boot from it, flash the drive.
Could it be easier??

Re: Suggestions and Feedback for Pioneer

This was a solution given to me by seeker010, which allowed him to run my flashers under Linux:

1) update to latest wine from distro repositories
2) add "chmod +rw /dev/sg?" in the /etc/rc.local file
3) download frogaspi and copy it to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/wnaspi32.dll
4) [sudo chown ~/.wine to root] (in case the programs complain about rights issues)
5) then start the flasher with [sudo] wine flasher.exe (in case program complains about rights issues)
6) [sudo chown ~/.wine back to user]

The things in [] only need to be used if the program complained about rights issues. They don't have to be used with fedora 8, but fedora 7 complains about it (step 2 may also avoid the need for these).

Please make new/updated firmware for DVR-K17RS or at least put the 1.0 version on your site.

Almost every new DVD+/-R can be burned only at 2,4x :/

You have to ask the OEM for firmware.

@ pAq,

You need to contact your undisclosed NoteBook - LapTop computer manufacture for Firmware UpDates for your DVR-K17RS DVD Burner.
