I second that question. I'd really like to be able to interpret all those pretty charts and graphs, but I can't so . . .

Does the 116D do as good as the 115D for writing DVDs?

@ i_am_jim,

Perhaps the reviewing the below CD Freaks posting concerning Disc Quality Sans will be helpful ->

http://club.cdfreaks.com/f76/interpr...r-scans-80545/

A quick and dirty check is to view the Scan ‘Quality Score’.

The general rule with scans is, lower is better, lower PIE,PIF & Jitter, but from what i have seen in the 216 needs a few more firmware updates, if i was to choose between the to of them, then i would probably be getting the 215.

Re: Pioneer DVR-116/D/XL, A16FX/J - Results & Discussion

My limited scans in the 116D have been more or less the same as the 115D. If you absolutely must have a burner right now, I'd get the 115D, since MCSE supports it for bitsetting single layer right now but not the 116D. If you can wait, I'd go for the 116D later on, since Pioneer will probably support that drive with firmare updates for a longer time.

I didnt even know that Verb +R and -R 16X came as TY (MIJ?) discs
I have never seen one.as such, and I have bought a LOT of VB discs from various sources
If so, are they avail in U.S. anywheres?

Verbatim-branded Taiyo Yuden is mostly a European thing. For [North] America, there are only Verbatim's own disc models. Some in South America have had "A-grade" Ritek and CMC MIDs. I am not sure about other parts of the world.

Re: Pioneer DVR-116/D/XL, A16FX/J - Results & Discussion

This sucks I heard that without read speed patch that the 116D reads 8x +/- R slower than 16x I gotta say that is the only thing that I hate abouit pioneer and what I think is so STUPID is the fact that reading at 16x causes no errors anyways. I just use ala's read speed patch. On my pc I always get problems with slowing down but 0n my duplicator and my 112D the rip speed is faster than any other burner I own I do believe that it toips out over 16x

As far as I know, it's only limited to 12x reading on low-rated because there are still a number of 8x media types that just don't read that well at 16x. As you said, if you have media that reads at 16x just fine, you can patch it yourself. But I could see where Pioneer comes from with limiting the speed. They're not the first to do it.

Yeah I see where your coming from I just wish I had some proof like something showing me that on these certain disks sometimes that by pioneer doing this lets say versus another reading at 16x that there is an actual integrity/quality drop and so the pioneer reading at 12x or whatever this loss doesn't happen. My 112's the one I use as a reader in my duplicator is speed patched and it rips hella fast and I haven't as far as I know any quality loss. Again I know they have probably well for sure have been studying/ testing this for years so I can't even compare but sometimes this causes me to go elsewhere because well whenever I have to duplicate say 100 disks & I never do copy on the fly then there is a big difference between 12x & 16x but also i wonder if i would stay with the stock 12x if my duplications would be better??

Re: Pioneer DVR-116/D/XL, A16FX/J - Results & Discussion

So ALBERT are you saying that there is a kind of "Read speed table" for the reading kind of like the burning that tells the drive what MID it is reading so it knows whether to read @ 10x or 12x or 16x or whatever?

I think they have done their testings and made that decision within a reason.

It appears that whatever speed Pioneer DVD Burners Read/Rip at Pioneer cannot please its customers.

Some Pioneer customer wants a slower Read/Rip speed ->

http://club.cdfreaks.com/2104275-post1.html

Another customer wants a faster Read/Rip speed ->

As far as I know, it runs based on the allowed write speeds for a given MID in the firmware. I think it also happened for 16x media locked at 12x, causing those media to also be locked to 12x reading [but don't quote me on that, as I will never be able to find the post for proof].
