Asus / Pioneer Burner Discuss, pioneer ao4 firmware hack at CD and DVD Burners forum; does anyone know if the rumors about a firmware hack that lets the ao4 burn 1x certified dvd's write at 2x true or is it just bull s**t

That is partly true, yes, and it's more than a rumor, I think. Even then, it is best to use 2x-certified DVD-R media.

If you don't use 2x certified media, then you can burn coasters at 2x speed on 1x media. That's all.

Exception is "RITEKG03" media. These are only labeled 1x, but can be written at 2x speed.
