Choppy disc playback (audio or DVD) copy or original - HELP!

I have a Pioneer DVR-K15 (firmware version 1.1) one of those combo CDRW and DVDRW drives... The laptop I bought came with Sonic Burning software. It works great. I installed 1clickDVD and DVD43, it also works beautifully. No problem making copies; the discs play well on other DVD players.

The problem is, when I try to play any disc on the drive, (DVD: copied or original, Audio CD: copy, MP3s, or original CD) it stutters. Its very choppy the whole time it attempts to play. When I first bought the computer, it played DVDs and CDs great. This only stated after I installed 1clickDVD and dvd43.

I have since deleted/uninstalled both 1click and dvd43, run a registry cleaner to make sure they're gone (RegScrubXP), defragged, rebooted, and tried to disable the digital CD Audio for the drive. I also downloaded Codec Sniper and the windows xp codec pack and deleted all the broken codec’s.

After doing all the above, it did get a little better, but it’s still ridiculously intolerable. It's like the music or DVD has a weird pulse when it plays: stop and go every second. Very choppy stutter. Do I have a bad drive or is there a registry setting I missed? Maybe a bad codec? I really have no clue. PLEASE HELP!

Re: Choppy disc playback (audio or DVD) copy or original - HELP!

Does a regular music file play alright? If so then there might be a problem with the drive. But it definitly sounds like a codec problem. Maybe see if there is a driver update for your onboard sound.

Re: Choppy disc playback (audio or DVD) copy or original - HELP!

This really sounds like it is not a drive problem.

Do a Nero CD DVD Speed burst rate test...

Re: Choppy disc playback (audio or DVD) copy or original - HELP!

Music and video files that are on the computer (itunes, wmp, mp3, etc...) play just fine. In fact, the only way I can listen to music from a disc is to rip it first.

I ran a Nero Speed test: (the results below are tab delimited, paste into excel to view easier) The audio disc I used had no damage or errors.

Serial Number Drive Firmware Transfer Rate - Average Transfer Rate - Start Transfer Rate - End Random Seek Time 1/3 Seek Time Full Seek Time 1 X CPU Usage 2 X CPU Usage 4 X CPU Usage 8 X CPU Usage Burst rate Spin Up Time Spin Down Time Load Time Eject Time Recognition Time
EGDL151476WL PIONEER DVDRW DVR-K15 1.11 6.15x 6.20x 6.07x 129 ms 148 ms 251 ms 16 % 33 % n/a n/a 953 KB/sec 0.01 sec 1.75 sec 0.00 sec 0.38 sec 7.33 sec

I went to the manufacture to check, and I have the lastest drivers for my sound card. Here is a list of all the codecs on my system - is there a confilct somewhere, maybe?

I think you should REINSTALL your on-board sound drivers.

Re: Choppy disc playback (audio or DVD) copy or original - HELP!

I'm having this EXACT problem, boys! It's spooky...

My dad ust got me a new laptop, went home, watched some movies on it, worked fine. Then I installed 1Click and DVD43FREE (or whatever). This worked awesome! I was having a hayday - couldn't drag me to bed to get some sleep.

Suddenly, choppy video (and sound). I tried everything, reinstalling drivers, uninstalling 1Click, fiddling with my resolution settings, trying different things with my graphics driver settings. Nothing worked! So I wiped out my new computer, formatted, and reinstalled everything.

This worked. Video ran great again. So I thought I'd take a sneaky approach.

I installed all my drivers. Then I installed CyblerLink PowerDVD. My anti-virus, and then 1Click and DVD43FREE (or whatever). Video worked great.

I updated my antivirus (Norton Internet Security). DVDs still played great. Then I ran the Windows Update...and pow!

Back to choppy video and sound. I reinstalled my graphics and sound drivers, but nothing. I'm stuck with choppy video. I ran through the DVD Troubleshooting over and over again. Nothing works.

Someone help? Pleeeeeeze?

Hm, it's still possible that various softwares cannot work together without issues.

Re: Choppy disc playback (audio or DVD) copy or original - HELP!

Hey, first time poster here.

I'm having the exact same problem as these guys with my Compaq V2000, also with the Pioneer DVR-K15 drive. I strongly suspect it's a problem with the DVD drive because not only do I get the exact same issues with choppiness, but sometimes the drive doesn't even recognize discs I put in (and I'm talking about original discs in good condition, not burned ones). Mine worked perfectly at first, but at some point it just seems to have stopped. I never installed 1click or dvd34free, but I did install Nero and that's about it. Has anyone found a fix for this yet?

I think I found a fix here on Compaqs website:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...0035557_choppy

Worked for me! DVD playback is perfect now.

Re: Choppy disc playback (audio or DVD) copy or original - HELP!

lol, how old is this?

DMA mode is the first thing that always should be controlled.

Anyway, it worked at last.

Re: Choppy disc playback (audio or DVD) copy or original - HELP!

Alright, I'm having the same exact problem as described above by 3br8 with my HP also with this Pioneer drive. It started off as being just choppy, while CD-ROMs worked, DVDs played choppy, CDs took 20 times longer to import to iTunes. So I call HP, they tell me to do pretty much everything described in that link 3br8 posted, so now I no longer have Secondary installed.

So the good news is it doesn't play choppy anymore. The bad news is it doesn't recognize that there's a disc in the drive. What can I do?

Any help or suggestions are much appreciated.

Yes, or by the proper method (using Isopropanol and a q-tip).

Re: Choppy disc playback (audio or DVD) copy or original - HELP!

Had the same problem on my Presario V2000, was working just fine then began the choppy DVD and CD playback. Took about an hour of surffing the web to find some answers, all of which were a bit off, then I hit the Compaq help center that is installed on my machine and it had several suggestins, none of which were right on but closer to the answer then most of the forums. Asked my son who is a professional computer geek working for the local internet outfit and he said the drive was toast.

Then I happened on a little site where the guy said try uninstalling your secondary IDE channel and reboot. THIS WORKED 100% my machine is back up and working just fine MASH now plays without a burp where it had been so jerky that Hawkeye sounded like he had a horrid stutter or perhaps territ syndrom.

At any rate this worked for me, when I had looked at the DMA setting for the secondary it was stuck on PIO mod only and could not be changed to Ultra DMA after the reboot it came up with DMA enabled on the secondary channel. Who'd of figured that Compaq would have used the secondary controller for the DVD/CDRW drive? I guess perhaps some way they use the primary slave for something else or something, who knows.
