My hardware's a very recent Shuttle which has an IDE cable on the primary IDE controller designed exclusively for the optical drive fitted to work as the Master IDE1 device - and this cable seems to have met the requirements of other burners OK... so do I need to go shopping for a better cable as well, or am I safe not to bother?

No yours will work fine.

"crossfiring"? Nope. Crossflashing, if.

And the features are discussed in many threads.

UDMA4 isn't a plug, it's just a signalling mode on the data cable to your drive.

If you have a Parallel ATA harddrive in your pc, you can look at the Primary IDE Channel under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers in your Device Manager, and see which Ultra DMA Mode your drive is running. Chances are that it will be UDMA5 and your optical drive will run UDMA4 if the firmware allows it and you have an 80-wire cable.

If your pc is recent enough to use a Serial ATA harddrive then it will definitely be able to run UDMA4 if the drive/firmware and cable allow it.

Re: CDFreaks Presents: The Pioneer DVR-111 Review

I am tempted to purchase the 111 right now, but if I knew that the 112 is going to introduced soon, I would go with that one. Any suggestions?

I burn a lot of DVDs and I would be open to any suggestions if there is a better choice for me as far as speed and quality of reproduction?

I am a newbie so you will have to have a little patience with me....

Thank You!

Re: CDFreaks Presents: The Pioneer DVR-111 Review

Still a few weeks before the 112 will arrive in europe.
If you need a dvd burner now, I would suggest to grab an 111 or 111D and flash it with the latest firmware.

I just bought a pioneer DVR 112D-BK with a Bytecc ME-340U2F enclosure. So I'm gonna use it as a external firewire drive. Will I need this 80-wire conductor cable to get the max 18X speed?

There will be an 80-wire IDE cable inside the enclosure. You will need a FireWire (a.k.a. IEEE 1394) cable to connect the enclosure to your pc. I don't know whether the FireWire cable is bundled with the enclosure.

Yes, it comes with usb and firewire cables, so I guess I'm all set.

Re: CDFreaks Presents: The Pioneer DVR-111 Review

I have this model, DVR-111D, & I would like a straight forward way to enable bit setting for it, I want to be able to book type DVD+R to DVD-ROM. I want/need a modified firmware + installer for my Pioneer 111D version 1.29 with bit setting function. I am inexperienced with this sort of thing, so I need step by step directions. Am running Windows XP home edition service pack 2 on a Dell dimension PC Pentium 4 processor computer system bought in 2003.

thanks for any help for a newbie,

Sossity

Re: CDFreaks Presents: The Pioneer DVR-111 Review

Download 8.19 INT and 8.29 INT frimwares for DVR-111L from http://tdb.rpc1.org/index.htm. Flash the DVR-111D with the 8.19 INT first to cross flash to 111L, and finally flash with the 8.29 INT latest firmware. The drive should then be seen as DVR-111L and will auto bitset DVD+R to DVD-ROM when burned. Be aware cross flash voids warranty, and the drive should be tested first in case it need be returned if defective.

Edit: See http://forums.speedlabs.org/index.php?topic=1082.0 for step by step details of cross flash.

Re: CDFreaks Presents: The Pioneer DVR-111 Review

I just finished getting my pioneer DVR-111D to be able to auto bit set DVD+R to DVD-ROM booktype, I think it did anyway, I checked a DVD+R disc I burned after installing the flash firmwares, in the verify disc part in Image burn & saw booktype DVD-ROM towards the bottom under last recording session. I have read that this makes DVD+Rs more widely compatable in general & with older equipment.

I want to archive/back up my movie files, jpgs, & tiff photos downloaded from my point & shoot digicam that are now on an external hard drive, onto discs. The movie files are mpg clips taken by my digicam. These files I want to burn now are not finished/edited DVD videos in DVD video format, but are more like data. what would be best for my purposes? I want/need the discs to last & be the most widely compatable the most operating systems, older & newer, PC & Mac, & set top DVD players. These will be archive discs, that I want to be able to open up in the event my hard drives fail.

I also have finished edited home movies in DVD video format as well, what would be best to archive these with?

Thanks for the links to the firmware & the links to the steps, I think it worked.
