So is this really a "three sheep" burner. How many three sheep burners are there, anyway?

Re: CDFreaks Presents: the Asus DRW-1612BL Burner review

Well, I see in some posts that this drive has 1.04 firmware, but mine has 1.06. After checked Asus site I can't find any firmware upgrade. Is this the same situation as LG drives, where are the firmwares ?

It passed all the test for a three sheep burner, sorry I don't have any more information than that.

Re: CDFreaks Presents: the Asus DRW-1612BL Burner review

Just got the Asus DRW-1612BL burner. Delivered with the 1.06 firmware.
Upgrade it to 1.10.....tested it with the sheeptest...only passed the 2.51 and
2.90 test. NOT passed the SHEEP3 test
Whats happening ?, is it because my upgrade to 1.10 or could it be different version of the hardware?
How to downgrade it to an older firmware version for testing?

Later this week I will have another system up and running and I can put that drive back in. I will upgrade the firmware and give the sheep test a try again and let you know.

Re: CDFreaks Presents: the Asus DRW-1612BL Burner review

So you should add a model from TSST too.

The 182M has no Lightscribe, the 18xL has.

Re: CDFreaks Presents: the Asus DRW-1612BL Burner review

This DVD-burners also use the same chipset as the ASUS DRW_1612BL
According to information from : http://www.hardware.info/en-UK/produ...1l/viewbyspec/
Just compare all the burners in this link.

HP dvd940i

Lite-On LH-20A1H

Philips SPD6003BD

Re: CDFreaks Presents: the Asus DRW-1612BL Burner review

In contrast to the review, I could not reproduce the sheep3-test.

With firmware 1.04:

sd2old.dat - works
sd251.dat - works
sd290.dat - works
bad.dat - NOT WORKING
sheep3.dat - NOT WORKING

the same with firmware 1.10

testing procedure exactly as in the guide, Multisession burning, Mode1, Track at Once, 24x.

Hence the question is, what went wrong here?!

a) different h/w versions around (is this realistic?!)
b) the reviewer made some kind of error in the procedure
c) some cosmic illuminati rays are attacking my PC

@the MegaDETH
would you please be so kind to repeat the sheep3 test (maybe with fw 1.10) and if you pass it, could you please describe as detailed as possible how you setup the test?

Maybe also generate a hash of sheep3.dat and bad.dat to compare?

Re: CDFreaks Presents: the Asus DRW-1612BL Burner review

Sheep Test additionally performed with firmware 1.06, another drive (January 2007 batch), another OS (Win98SE) and another software (Nero 6.3)...

...leading to exactly same result: failure on sheep3.dat and bad.dat.

This concludes that the review is indeed wrong and misleading. I'd recommend to correct this as that feature could be relevant to some buyers!
