107D DVD Region Free Question

Hi all,

I understand that there are two "layers" of region protection; the first being hardware-related (DVD recorder) and the second being software-related (OS and DVD player software).

After flashing my Pioneer 107D with AnyDVD or the likes) before I insert my original DVD movie. Movie plays fine without any problems. Now, while the movie is playing (or the DVD inserted for that matter), I browse to my 107D drive properties under System in the Control Panel, and tells me that I have "1" change left until the drive is permanently region-locked. I fire up Nero Infotools and it correctly tells me that my drive is still RC-1 (region free).

Ok, now, I remove the DVD, close Region Free software, and check the drive properties again (under Control Panel, System) and it still tells me that I've got 1 region change left.

So basically, my question is, is the purpose of region free software (like the Region Killer, AnyDVD etc etc) to allow the user to play region protected DVD movies even though the Windows may eventually be "region-locked"? So as long as the drive (107D) is region free, the use of the said region free software will bypass Windows' region protection?

Thanks.

Re: 107D DVD Region Free Question

what region free software are you using? dvd region killer is good to use because it's free. in order to view a region 3 movie, you'll have to enable dvd region killer. you can set dvd region killer to default to region 3 and so forth. just because dvd region killer is installed on your pc it has to be enabled in order for you to watch any region dvd movie. to sum it up using dvd region killer will bypass the windows region protection. hope this clears things up for you.

Re: 107D DVD Region Free Question

Cheers for that.

One more question though, in order to get DVD Region Killer to bypass Windows' region counter, do I need to "set" a region in the Windows' region counter, or do I just leave it as "unspecified" and let DVD Region Killer do the work?

Cheers.

Re: 107D DVD Region Free Question

at the risk of hijacking this thread, when I bought my drive DVR-107D I noticed that the region was not set, I'm assuming this is region free then since I havn't been able to test this.

I've flashed it, and region was still not set on the drive.

I don't think anyone used this drive previously, the sticker says firmware 1.13 which it was, unless someone flashed it with a hacked firmware

If you flashed it with the hacked firmware then it will be "REGION FREE". If the drive region is not set then it wasn't flashed with the hacked firmware. Use dvdinfo pro to see if the drive is ALL REGION. If it shows region is not set then the drive isn't REGION FREE.

Re: 107D DVD Region Free Question

Region not set simply means that you have not yet played a region protected DVD video in the drive to set the region.

Re: 107D DVD Region Free Question

ok, for some bizarre reason, the drive is now set to Region 1, I have no idea why, i've not played a DVD movie in this drive for ages, plus UK is region 2.
