Newbie needs help - Install ?'s and Slow Read Rates

I just got my 3500 in the mail today.

I already have a CD+RW drive so I left that connected as is. I didn't make any adjustments to the drive (i.e change jumpers). I just slid the drive in connected the power and another portion of the IDE cable that was going to my other (CD+RW) drive.

My Computer is a Dell 2.6 MHz running XP home SP2 with 512 RAM
My Primary IDE channel has 2 hard drives (one 40 GB the other 120).

I thought I'd boot and give it a try. During the boot I got a an error in the bios that said "secondary drive 0 not found - hit f1 to continue or f2 to setup"

Setup just takes me to the BIOS and F1 took me to windows where I get an message that some of my hardware that has been in place for a while (ipod, CF card reader) is recongized as new hardware. It then recongized the NEC 3500 and lists "DVD-RW" under my computer

Problem Any time I try to use any software to read a DVD it READS extremely slow - I mean like 10-85 kbs. In DVD Decrypter it says its reading at 0.1x. DVD Shrink was to take 2-5 hours just for the initial analysis. A quick seach of the forum turned up few threads talking about DMA so i went in my device manager and under the second channel made sure it said "DMA if available"

Any help would be appreciated - I'm obviously pretty new to installing hardware here

Re: Newbie needs help - Install ?'s and Slow Read Rates

you may want to see if you have a 80 pin ide cable you, you may need a 80 pin cable especially if you are also running a cr-rw on it. also make sure you have it set to master or slave depending on your config. Not cable select.

just a quick reply till someone else comes along, Im still trying to get the 2500 to work !?#$%
