If you are willing to $20 to $30 for $3 IDE cable then the retail version is for you otherwise go with OEM.

Agreed. In almost every case, the OEM drive is mechanically identical to the Retail. When there is a difference it is the faceplate or some additional software or cable. An exception is the Pioneer 109 and even this drive can be crossflashed to the A09.

The retail software is also an incentive.

I usually find I can get the same software for $5 or so like I did for Nero Ultimate. Also, lately Newegg has started adding software to some of their OEM drives for $4-$5 more.

Well.....you are asking the wrong guy if you want an impartial opinion on BenQ. But I have found that my 3520 is the best all round burner I own. Look at my media scores and the link to the 3500/3520 comparison. I would avoid the 3540 as I have seen problems in getting good burns and the firmware needs some work. There is no question that a working BenQ 1620 and an NEC are a good complement to each other. BTW, the NEC is fantastic for -R.

Re: NEC selling now retail kit in USA?

both do very well with -R
take this into consideration:
3500 has mature Firmware
3520 has scanning ability and the Firmware support is pretty good too, but interm of burning quality, I think most folks would say the 3500, but just marginal advantage on the burning quality

Re: NEC selling now retail kit in USA?

The 3500 is very hard to find but if you look at my media score link as well as the one for the comparison, you will find they are both very close. For a while people were paying outlandish prices when the 3500 was discontinued so I got a 3520 just to run the comparison and I found little difference.

Re: NEC selling now retail kit in USA?

I see no significant difference between my 3500 and 3520.
