Re: new to copying dvds

Nero recode does not remove copy protection, it only compresses the data to fit on a single layer disc. DVDshrink does remove CP but it has not been update in a long time and there are many newer forms of CP that it can not handle.

You need to use a CP removal progam like; AnyDVD, DVDfabDecrypter, DVDDecrypter (it's not updated either but it has workarounds to handle newer protection). For a noobie, AnyDVD is probably the easiest solution to removing CP, although it is not free. DVDfabDecrypter is free but is not updated as fast as AnyDVD, but it is updated. Use one of them first and then you can then run the files thru Shrink, Recode or any other compresser. AnyDVD folks also have CloneDVD which does the same as recode and you can get a bundle discount if you get both.

But you probably need to pickup AnyDVD for the simplest answer. Then use whatever app you like to compress & burn with. If you want to try the free route first, get DVDfab Decrypter and try it first. Some New release discs may cause problems until they update it, so be patient. AnyDVD seems to update within a day or two (sometimes "hours") of a new CP version coming out.

If you don't mind, I would like to get the benefit of you experience.
i fortunately have both Nero 7, AnyDVD, as well as CloneDVD 2. All legally registered.
  1. I have used Nero Recode 2 sucessfully with AnyDVD, but not 100% of the time.
  2. Since the amazing AnyDVD has been sending me so many enhancements and fixes, I wonder if it would work perfrctly with Nero Recode 2 ?
  3. CloneDVD 2, which was upgraded recently, is so simple and fast, with few options. One thing about it, I wonder if the output of CloneDVD 2 can ever be as good as Nero Recode 2, with Nero Recode 2 doing a 2 pass encode.
  4. With both products, I always have the output go to a image file. In that way, I can examine the output by creating a virtual drive from the Image. It only takes a few minues to burn from a Image file.
  5. Please your thoughts about the Latest Nero Recode 2 vs, CloneDVD 2.
  6. I have DVD Decrypter and have used it ###### times, I still use it sometimes to isolate audio files. But I think the time savings of going directly from DVD on disk or DVD to your selected media output is a great time saver. Also AnyDVD is constantly being enhanced to cover all of the instanity that is going on.
  7. I have used DVD Shrink in the past, but with having AnyDVD, CloneDVD 2 and Nero, I don't see a reason to use DVD Shrink like before. Weren't 't the DVD Shrink people invovled with Nero Recode 2 and Nero Vision 4 ?

Re: new to copying dvds

I have CloneDVD & Nero 7 as well. I used DVDdecrypter for a long time but am using AnyDVD more and more as newer CP schemes are coming out and I don't want to hassle with PSL files to get it to work.

I do use DVDD to copy the discs to the HD. I have AnyDVD running and use DVDD (with bad sector stuff turned off) to copy the files over. That way it will keep hammering files if it gets ahold of a scratched disc (where explorer won't). And I alsways copy it to the HD first. I never do on-the-fly, it just seems alot of folks have more problems that way.

That said, I generally use Recode more. It does have the guy behind DVDshrink doing the coding (probably why shrink is no longer developed). I like to 2-pass option of Recode and that I can change the quality of compression, so if I want to squeeze the extras a little more, I can.

I use CloneDVD when I have a disc that has almost no extras or I want to compress fast as CloneDVD does a better fast job. I output mine as files and if all test out, I usually burn with ImageToolBurn by CuoJo (which uses the Nero API). (old habit). I will probably move towards making an image and testing and then just burn the image later.

Bottom line is that's its your choice. I personally feel Recode does a better job because of the 2-pass option and that I can lower some compression %s while raising others.

Re: new to copying dvds

Thanks for the great reply. Since I am a moron, could you please tell me what DVDD means ?

goober22, your fexperiences and mine seem similar when it comes to evaluating CloneDVD 2 and Nero Recode 2.
I find CloneDVD2's speed, simplicity, reliability and consistency absolutely amazing. It just works and works fast.

I have feel as well that if the speed isn't an issue and I want the best quality that I can get, the two step Nero Recode 2 gives the best looking output to play on my stand alone DVD player.

That is cool that you mention using a technique that I have fallen in love with for both CD and DVD and DVD + RL burning. I find the image burn takes takes only about 3 to 10 minutes longer than going directly to media. With products like Nero, CloneDVD2 has as well as many free ones as well as Daemon tools that I have been using for years, it can save so much aggrevation to create a virtual drive and just play the video/audio copy that was just made.
Just yesterday I saved myself some aggrevation with seeing that I messed up by not having the menu that I wanted to start off first.

With audio in partiular. If some image files are backed to DVD, then if one wanted to play them again in original form or re-encode them in another form, the image file is a bit by bit exact copy of the original source.

Last thing. A Image file burn is the fastest adn safest type of burn there is. No calculations.

If one double clicks on a .img or .nrg file, Nero will come up, all ready to burn the image file to media. It just neads another click to go.

I agree with you also on the flexibility that Recorde gives you, as far as being able to really control where you want a better quality and where you are willing to sacrifice quality.

I have found that sometimes recode 2 gets stuck for some unknown reasons.

I also have found that, now that I can get some DVD + R DL media for a little under $2 (the Verbatim's), that CloneDVD 2 does such a fast, find job on them, I am starting to use them more. Especially when the extras are items I want to keep. Especially on convert DVDs.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Jon

No problem. I'm by no means, an expert. I just found what works best for me.

"could you please tell me what DVDD means"

DVDdecrypter. I just didn't want to type that over and over!
