Which compression format is better for archiving DVDs?

Nero Digital = kind of XviD quality (good but far from perfect) and fast encoding.
Nero Digital AVC = almost x264 quality (very very good) and not-that-fast encoding.

I would use AVC one. I would never trade quality for speed.

I hope x.264 standalone players will become mainstream soon.
x.264 is twice more efficient than XVID

How much time do you need for .264 encoding in comparison to x.263?

Is there any chance to speedup the compression process by disabling some function which just have a low influence to the quality?
