Howto convert "Nero Digital" to "AVI" (Divx Compilant) use with Standalone Playe

Hi,

first of all (sorry for my bad english - i'm german).
The Quality of "Nero Digital" is better then XViD or actually DiVX.
Thats why i found a way to convert the mp4 Container to avi.

1. First of all start Nero Recode 2 and convert your DVD (use with AnyDVD to remove the CSS) to standard mp4.

- we dont need the aac audio track yet (because, we must convert the dvd/ac3 audio track seperatly to produce mp3)

2. Download the prog. "mp4UI" from http://www.mpeg4ip.net

- install and start it
- extract the Movie track to AVI out of the mp4 File.
(just right click on the Video Track und extract to AVI)
- Voila, now you got a playable AVI File (use media player to verify) without sound (use ffdshow)

3. Use XMpeg or an other Prog. to extract the Audio track out of the DVD to MP3

4. Start VirtualDub and merge the AVI-File with the converted MP3 File to one AVI with Sound.

5. -> test it on your Xoro 400 plus, SEG DVX or any other standalone Player.

Any comments or a better way to convert the Audio Track to me

enjoy.... SiENcE^KáGe

that's nice, but I would first rip the dvd with dvddecrypter, and use stream processing and demuxing to extract the audio, and then transcode using besweet (with gui). Offers much more quality IMO.

I tried this last night. I used mp4ui and extracted an AVI from the Nero MP4 file. I didnt bother with the audio, I just wanted to see if the video would play. The video doesnt work. It doesnt play in Media Player. It doesnt play in Divx Player, and it doesnt play on my Archos.

The only odd thing is I selected 'simple profile' in Nero's options when creating the mp4. I fail to see how this would complicate the matter, but I'll try again with Nero's default settings.

Unhappy

I tried it too today. I converted a DVD to "nero digital" and extracted the movie with mp4ui. I could play the avi with the ffdshow filter. But without them I only got a black screen. My standalone-Player (hiteker HE-920) couldn't play the file.
Changing the fourcc didn't help either. I tried "DIV5", "DIV4" and "XVID). Is there anyone who could play the extracted avi-file in his standalone?
P.S: I tried Simple Profile like FredStone, but it didn't help.

thats true

I dont know why DIVX or XVID does'nt play the ISO conform MP4 of Nero Digital.

The "ffdshow" Filter plays Nero Digital, also Apple "Quicktime" and http://www.3ivx.com/ .

So try these (De)Codecs an PC.

On standalone i'm waiting for good news. So let's try!

Red face

The Nero Digital files packed into AVI container dont play on my Archos, so the whole format is useless to me. the only place I can watch Nero Digital is using the Nero player app.

If anyone figures out how to convert this format to a simple profile AVI, with less effort than going straight to Divx, let us know.

I got da solution

Hey you guyz. . .i found out how to make your Nero Recode Mpeg4 moviez into DivX and it is not even a difficult task. All you need is Dr.DivX prog from divx.com. I know it workz becuz i tried it with one of my Recode moviez last night and the file came out perfectly. So instead of messing with that tutorial, just use the simple interface of Dr. DivX . i hope i help you guyz out~!

Well, simply put, it jus re encodes the file into divx, so actually, you'd be better off encoding to divx in the first place

Thumbs down

He's got it right: In other words, rather than using nero to encode your movie to nero digital, then using Dr Divx to convert that to Divx, it's easier just to use Dr Divx in the first place and go straight to divx.

What we need is a way to convert nero digital mp4 to divx compatible AVI without re-encoding (if this is possible)

Until that day, the Nero Digital format is little more than a useless novelty.

I found this thread in a google search.

I am very impressed with the speed and quality of Recode2 mp4 files.

I am in the same boat as FredStone... I am looking for a way to get excellent quality video into my Archos AV300. After reading Fred's reply, I had my doubts, but I trudged on anyways....

I used Recode2 to create the 352x256 mp4 file of a DVD i created using Pinnacle Impression DVD Pro... therefore it did not require ripping. Next, using the MP4UI program, I was able to create a video only AVI file that played back beautifully on the AV300. I was not expecting it to work...

This morning I used XMPEG to extract the audio from the DVD to a 128kbps cbr Lame MP3 file. Then I was able to combine the avi and mp3 tracks via the direct stream copy mode using NanDub. The resultant avi file played back great in my AV300.

Has anyone else been trying to figure out this same puzzle?

I am still not sure if it is worth all the extra effort, since the latest versions of FairUse and AutoGK work extremely well. I guess this method is for all those die hards that used to rip DVDs prior to the DVD2One generation of software...

Trying again

I'm going to try MP4UI again and see if it will work. Recode is a nice app. Combined with AnyDVD, there is no ripping any more in life.

I have no problem with Dr Divx, but if Recode will do the job then that's one less app to use. I dont want to use 14 programs to do this job, it's either the Dr or Nero, whatever works. I'm suprised it worked for you as I did the same thing, I'll try it tonight

Well, the audio sync was way off when I tried to convert an entire movie using the method I explained above.

I guess I will stick to FairUse and AutoGK.

besides, i think with a bit of tweaking xvid looks alot better than nero digital, it looks way to soft and blurry IMO. But I think that your sync probs could be easily solved if you'd use dvd2avi to extract the AC3 and then use headAC3he to convert that to mp3, headac3he automatically uses the delay value that dvd2avi indicates in the filename (the_boondock_saints_delay 200ms.ac3 or something like that)

Unhappy Tevion DVD 4000

I just tried my new Tevion DVD 4000 divx player. Unfortunately it doesn't work with the Nero Recode encoded movie. It stops working after about 10 seconds and hangs.

As far what I've seen the quality of the Recode avi looks pretty good. Any idea how I could get it could work on this Player?

Would be much better working with Nero because it's converting the videos much faster than divx or xvid. On my computer it works with about 40 frames/sec. Quality look pretty good.

You are trying to use a Divx player to read an mp4? That will not really work. You need the Divx format, nero digital in not divx

Re: Howto convert "Nero Digital" to "AVI" (Divx Compilant) use with Standalone Playe

DivX is just an implementation of MPEG4 (A)SP video, and NeroDigital is exactly the same.

The problem seems to be that a lot of the standalones have incomplete or broken decoders, and were only tested with DivX/XviD videos.

I too am searching for an easy way to convert DVD to SVCD as easily as "convert main movie to Nero Digital". For example, and extra step in using Nero Vision Xpress would seem appropriate, but I cannot figure it out. Can a MP4 be used for input into NVE? ... and, how do I get past the option for menus without creating a menu? (i.e., a SVCD which will play straight away in generic (most) DVD players?)

Could somebody please supply a link to a Windows executable port of the mpeg4ip project?

A utility called mp4UI can be downloaded from mp4ui.sourceforge.net

This app will allow you to convert the videostream in the MP4 container created by Nero Recode (using the simple profile) to an AVI file. And yes, it plays back flawlessly on my Denver DVD-438 standalone.

Angry Re: Trying again

Spent the better part of a day, got it to work going from divx to nero. Problem is that the nero stuff won't playback on my philips 642 dvd player. I'm switching back to divx. Dr. divx has more power than recode anyhow.

When will Nero make divx video?

Nero will not make divx video. We make industry standard mpeg4 in standard mp4-container and higher quality than divx.
DivX has at the moment more hardware support, but support for Nero Digital mpeg4 is appearing too.

Re: Howto convert "Nero Digital" to "AVI" (Divx Compilant) use with Standalone Playe

It seems to me that the real problem here when discussing .mp4 and .avi etc is the failure by hardware manufacturers to manufacture DVD players that will play .mp4 files. I have been using Recode for 12 months and have been very happy with the ease of use and the results that I have achieved.

I have just purchased a standalone DVD player that seems to play almost anything, Divx, Xvid, HDCD, .wma, .wmv, mp3 etc but it won't play .mp4 !!!! Consequently I have to go down the Dr Divx route if I want to play my movies on this player.

The problem is that the alternative encoders to Nero Recode have to be purchased, take longer to encode any given movie and are more complex to use.
I cannot notice any increase in quality.

This all goes bak to Nero not liasing with hardware manufacturers so that .mp4 became the standard instead of Divx!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, .mp4 is an industry standard supported by a lot more companies than just Nero. The hardware manufacturers ignored it so they could put DivX logos on the players instead and now the customers are left with the fallout

You can buy players that support both btw, like the Siemssen SCO 5000, and newer KISS players. With some luck there will be firmware updates for older players, too. It may help to complain to the manufacturer of your unit that it doesn't support industry standards.
I personally think this is even deceptive marketing since most of them claim to be selling "MPEG-4 players", but that is clearly not true. In many countries this kind of deception is illegal.

I think .mp4 format will be included in all new DVD players soon. For example, all new phones with video recorders record directly into .mp4. It would be silly for the players to not support this.
