Does "merging titles" in Recode 2 cause reduction in original quality?

I have noticed that merging titles using the 100% video quality setting will result in a vob file that is smaller than the the combined size of the seperate vob files before merge. Wondering if anybody knows whether there is a loss of quality compared to the original source when merging titles using 100% quality setting?

Did a test to combine two VOB files.

2 x 330782 = 661564 compared to the final size 661558

So I would say no. If you get a considerable higher size difference it could be that a stream (language/sub) is removed based on your settings in Nero Recode.

Do be aware that there is a bug in the merging function. The time table is not 100% right after the merging. To solve this, open up the merged folder in PgcEdit (freeware) and let that program automatically fix it for you. (You just need to open the program and save the files).

Re: Does "merging titles" in Recode 2 cause reduction in original quality?

Hi, thx for the tip.

I did the test with 13 smaller titles. The smaller ones (only counting vob files) were a total of 43.2Mb while the finished merged title was 42.1Mb (nothing was removed during merging). I'll redo the test in different versions to make sure that i'm not lying to you.

With the time table problem are you referring to the fact that it's not the total time of the vob that is being displayed but the playing time for each single pre merge title? Or is there a sync problem with video or audio? If its the former then thats allright as i dont mind seing the time for a single episode during play.

Without a time map, you cannot seek to a specific time in the title. This means that the "time slider" or "seek bar" of the software players are disabled, as is the "goto time" feature of the standalone players.
Of course, a wrong time map leads you to a wrong position in the title, and can even crash the player.

So out of old habit, I always load up merged files from Nero Recode into Pgcedit, just to be sure that there will be no problems during playback. It's not all mergings that get a wrong time map table, it's very random.
