I'm still waiting for a firmware that delivers better write quality for more (inexpensive) media.

If I hadn't cut the UPC off the box to send in for a rebate, mine would belong to Officemax again! And as far as I know, the support sux. I have heard several people boast of Marco helping out, but it seems he left right when I starting comming here(mid December).

I'm currently in possession of 17 BTC1004IM's and three BTC1008IM's.

Build quality is good, and it is aesthetically pleasing.

They are quiet in operation and have amazing error correction abilities.

Ripping badly scratched CD/DVD's with them is just a breeze.

Half the fun I've had is from reading this forum - the absurd comments, the naivety of some owners, the dis-information that gets perpetuated every now and then,...

It just puts a big knowing smile on my face.

Hardware wise, the drives are still a bit troublesome.

The firmware just hasn't reached a sufficient level of maturity for me to release them into the wild.

So, on that score, I'm going to reserve judgement on them for the time being.

I guess that BTC is short for Burn That Coaster

Totally agree. Anyone knows if their DVD-ROM drives are just as good with scratched media?

Cheers,
Peter

After upgrading to fw 0048 I haven't had any problems using Memorex 4X DVD +R discs. I am very pleased with my BTC1004 drive.

I have a Pioneer 05, the BTC 1004 and a Lite-On 811s. They all have their good and bad points. I flashed the BTC to fw 47 as soon as I brought it home and have been pleased with it. It has burned Fuji DVD-R and DVD+RW (4x), Ritek 03 DVD-R, Imations DVD-R and DVD+RW, Extreme DVD-R (4x), CompUSA DVD-R and Optodisc DVD-RW. The only issue has been with a Princo DVD-RW, but that's a piece of junk. Overall I would say the Pioneer is better than both the BTC and Lite-On for DVD-R and DVD-RW. Yet, I remember all the forums whining about media when I first bought that drive too. The BTC and Lite-On both do a fine job on the DVD+ media I have. I go to the Lite-On forums once in a while and I see them having similar problems with cheap media and DVD- stuff. Bottomline - I'm okay with the drive.

I like the burner very much. It makes me not paying so much money into the domain of dual DVD. I now stick the burner with Maxmax 1-4X DVD-R(MID is GSC001) and Ritek 4X DVD+R(MID is RICONJPNR01) and they are great. I only argue that the burner can't update the firmware by using external box. It is not convenient for many NOTEBOOK users.

Every company has their policy. Maybe BTC company don't like Macro BTC(represented by the manufacturer) to touch the endusers directly. I respect Macro BTC no matter what he has decided to do.

So far, I'm pretty happy with my 1008. It seems very solid and I've burned a couple CDs with it and no coasters. The only problem I've had is that I can't flash the firmware (PC just locks up every time).

I'm quite happy with my 1004 too.
Right now I found the right media (PRODISCS03) and everything is ok. I tried also, with success, OPTODISCK001 and Verbatim TY DVD-R.

My drive works great, too many people try to find the limit of the drives capability instead of sticking to a media that works.

My analogy is use media that works and stick with it. Only use media that works and don't complain when you buy crap discs that don't work.

Too many people with problems shouldn't be using DVD+/-RW drives because of their inexperience and lack of knowledge on the topic. DVD+/-R / RW drives are not for your average person...at least not yet.

i'm happy with my 1004, only one coaster so far. ( my own fault).

Works fine with different media-brants (tried philips, fuji, ricoh).

No experience with burning cd-r(w)s however, as i have a 52 speed Lite-on burner.

Stay away from the cheap media, they are unreliable,
on ANY burner.....

No reason to be happy with ide1004

Ive had few problems, wasted money, trying to get this product to do what its ment to

my ide 1004 is fully working and all but its tempramentel. and because of this I wouldnt have been abled to get a refund on this item.

If this item had been a another electrical like perhapps a washing machine that shredding clothes, I would have rushed it back for replacement.
I am aware a lot of people are pleased with their drives thats cool but for me its a thumbs down because btc were not preapared to offer some kind compensation for money spent.

Don't want to start a war, OK. But, what is crap media? Are you the one to decide, or BTC, or maybe Pioneer or Sony or Lite-on??

I have problems with Memorex brand media with this drive. It is not cheap and the MID code is listed on the compatability list.

Sorry, but this quote is rediculous! Just how would someone who is not a pro at this ever get started then, I guess some are just born knowing everthing about DVD writing. And to finish up sugesting that people who have problems are ignorant is, well, ignorant. You have no idea of anyone on this forums level of education or intellect.

What is crap media, you ask?

Crap media is media that can only reliably produce coasters. When I first bought my Pioneer drive, I bought Imations DVD-R discs. Good discs right? WRONG! they failed well over 50% of the time. I immediately put Imation on my "CRAP MEDIA" list and swore that I would never buy Imation again. Then I tried Khypermedia branded discs from OfficeMax and they worked great, I added them onto my "good media list". Then I learned about MID codes and figured out how to ID high potential candidates for my burner and the rest is history.

As for DVD +/- R /W drives not being for the masses, remember VCR + ? It was an easy way for anyone to use a VCR to record their favorite show, took all the guess work out of it. DVD burning on your computer doesn't have a VCR+ feature, yet.

I have several friends who just totally piss me off as to how they approach problems solving WRT computers, no rhyme or reason to their approach, just shot gun blast in all directions until all living things in sight are dead. I hate that method of problem solving and think that some people should be washing or waxing cars instead of burning DVD's on the computer.

All the pros I know in the industry didn't just fall into their professions, they studied in school and learned from others, they didn't just piss and moan about something that didn't work, they figured out why it didn't work and then made it work. That's the educated approach, not the shot gun approach.

It's funny you mentions Imations, the ones I use on my Cyberdrive burn at 8X and look great in Kprobe and CD Speed, +'s though. Also, I rarely find any -R media that my 105 can not write perfectly, but they have been making dvd writers longer than anyone, they should be better. Now if you conpare + quality with the Cyberdrive and - quality with the Pioneer than the BTC drives flat out suck. Furthermore, compare both formats quality with that of Lite-on, NEC, Phillips, Sony, or Plextor and where does it stack up?? I'd say it's all the way to the bottom. That places it in the area of Optorite and Benq, not really great company.

One more thing, what does it say about a manufacturer that SPECIFICALLY states a particular media works on there web site and it does not. I have used two brands of media that were on that list that failed, ervery time. I am not alone either, look at the media threads and see how many officially supported media failed.

This is not whining, it is stating the obvious.

I do know assemby for several processors so I guess with your logic I need to learn the opcodes for the mediatek chipset and write my own firmware. I have spend considerable time in school.
