which tools to check burning quality ?

Hi,

I currently use the firmware 043 on my drw1004im drive. I've burn some MAM/Mitsui DVD-R 4X (code MCI4XG01). I've burn them only at 2x speed because with previous firmware all tries were not successfull regardless the speed. The result seems good at 2x, dvd-r seems readable on my dvd players and nero cd-dvd speed scandisc return no error, even in another dvd drive on another computer. But after, my kids discover that some of them (at least 2 of 5) present some freeze on video playback. Which other tool can i use to check the quality of dvd burning, and to verify that there is no freeze on video.

Thanks

When looking at a K's Probe scan you should note the following:

1) PI (or C1 errors) are reported in the top graph. The average count should be below 280.
2) PO (or C2 errors) should probably not be present at all - but they will.
3) In general you should set scan speed to 4, uncheck Max and Sum: 8 ECC

For more info check this thread http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread....threadid=75573. Please note that a CD-R media is used as an example - not quite comparable to DVD media.

You can also find a more technical explanation here http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/127/5. Besides it's an interesting review of the Liteon LDW-411S dual burner based on the same Mediatek chipset as our 1004IM.

You're right - the scan indicates a non-optimized write strategi for the Mitsui medias (Mitsui is known to produce high quality CD-R so their DVD-R should be of equally high quality). Actually I was thinking of buying this media myself (yeah yeah, I know they are not listed on the BTC compatibility list but since this list needs updating ...). Anyway If I were you I would definately stop using this media for now and save it until supported in a future firmware update.

Did you do a Nero Scandisc (surface scan)? This will check if the burned media has any defective sectors. Also a transfer rate test will give you an idea of the burnquality. If the transfer rate graph keeps rising/falling it means that the drive is strugling reading the media. Oh, do always check the media in another DVD-ROM drive. This is in my oppinion a much better verification than testing in the burner itself. To sum it all up:

1) Burn the media at the certified speed. If you buy a 4X certified media but can only burn it at 2X it usually means the media is not fully supported in firmware. Try another media or accept the risk of producing a coaster.
2) Do a C1/C2 error scan in K's Probe. Avg. PI/C1 count should be below 280 and avg. PO/C2 count should be very low
3) Do a surfacescan using Nero Scandisk IN ANOTHER DRIVE.
4) Do a transferrate test IN ANOTHER DRIVE. The graph should start low and keep rising to the very end of the media

Now you know if you have found a good/compatible media for your 1004 drive - or whether you should keep looking. A media that works great for me (except with firmware 0045) is Verbatim DataLifePlus 4X DVD-R. The MID code is TYG01.

Cheers,
Peter

Hi,

I will follow your advises, and check in another drive the surfacescan and the transferrate. For information, On the BTC drive the surface scan in OK and the transferrate is as you describe.

I hope that marco will include those DVD-R to the next firmware enhancements.

I know that it's 040 but i hesitate to downgrade...I prefere to wait for the coming 047 (soon i hope).
But i've made some new test with the 043 and MAM/Mitsui media:

At 4X : "burn process fail at 4X" after (or during ?) the lead-in. Two tries, and two DVD-R unusable anymore

At 2X : 1 test with much better results, no more freeze, better result with kprobe (i will post it later). I've burn it just after a reboot because i have the feeling that burning quality is decreasing when i made several burning successively (nero issue ??).

Bye.
