help a confused newbie please!

Hi

I'm new to this DVD burning lark. I bought a Pikaone/BTC external (which i understand is a 1004).

I'm using nero 6.0 and have firmware 0.43. Two problems which I'm sure are inter-related from reading these forums

I have successfully burnt a few +rw discsI have tried burning 2 types of dvd-r which are supposedly compatible (Benq/sony and Ritek G04) in Nero and both have failed 3 times.

I thought this would be a firmware issue after reading this forum so I tried to use the update on BTC's website, only it won't update the external drive. So if it's a firmware issue how can I update it?!

If it's not a firmware issue what hints can anyone hive me on what software I need to be buying/what updates I need to make this drive work. Basically, where do I eve start to solve my problem?

Any help is so appreciated! I only wanted a simple means of backing up my work and had no idea what a minefield it was!

Thanks in advance

SB

hy,

first update all to the last version and try again,

nero to 6.3.0.2 i think

the firmware update for your external drive you find here

www.pikaone.com/en/support/download_center.htm

last updated on 22 Jan so i think it´s v 0048 if your drive is a 1004.

cheers

Thanks Herbei,

That's the problem though. I can't upgrade firmware with this tool. It doesn't recognise my external drive.

I've updated my Nero to 6.3.0.2, and it's exactly the same. I'm trying to burn these 2 types of discs (which are supposed to be compatible and the burning stops at 2%

I'm going nuts!

It's connected via USB2. Tried firewire too to no avail.

Any other ideas? Is there anything other than the firmware that could be wrong here? And if I am stuck with a non-upgradeable external drive, can anyone tell me which dvd-r discs will definitely burn with the latest nero and the 0.43 firmware supplied?

Thanks again

...or simply open the USB case, remove the drive, and IDE-flash it.

Thanks for your responses.

I did the IDE thing. Now SOME of my media is burning with Nero 6.3! Better than nothing.

Thanks again
