DVDRW IDE1004 Bitset hassle

ok, I found out that my Burner's FirmWare was WAY outdated, I also found out that my burner is a BTC 1004, I have upgraded to firmware 0050 (from MicroAdvantage's site), and It seems to have corrected my problem, but has also brought up some new questions...

Now with the new firmware, I have to Bitset my DVD-R's to get them to work with my standalone DVD player. Why is this ? Why in the past with the old firmware would my DVD-R's be recognised in my Standalone player(although they wouldn't play smoothly with out skipping due to the old FW) but now I have to bitset before burning ?

The bitset program (MicroAdvantage v1.05 of the bitset utility ) isn't working for me... i woun't set it to DVD-ROM.
I have also tried DVDInfo Pro and got a error message (see attached). BTW - The error says the DVD-R has already been written on, but it hasn't it is a brand new blank DVD-R.

---Added---
I have even tried putting firmware ver. 0049 on my drive to get me to be able to play DVD-R media in my stand alone, with out Bitset.
I am using DVD Shrink v3.1 to make my copy's.
--------------

Will the firmware found at The Dangerous Brothers page (http://tdb.rpc1.org/#DRW1004IM) fix the bitsetting problem ? or will I still have to bitset before burning ?
Or is their a Hacked Firmware that will take care of bitset automatically ?

Are there any other solutions to Bitset I can try ?

You cannot change the booktype of DVD-R/RW media! This feature is for DVD+R/RW discs only!

The booktype of DVD-R media is prewritten.

My Standalone DVD player can read DVD-R media, untill I installed FW v0050, now it can't read any of my DVD-R burn's ...

The media I am burning on is "Taiyo Yuden" [TYG01] DVD-R's (which I was told was one of the best media's for burning)...

So after 5 coasters using FW v0050(trying to get bitset to work), I reverted back to FW v0048, and once again my standalone DVD player can read them again,
BUT, the video playback is VERY sloppy... it is choppy and skips... not a smooth movie.

Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated ?

It has nothing to do with the booktype of the discs.

Ok,
Then why when the burner is in FW v0048 my DVD player (which supports DVD-R's) will play them, although the quality is very choppy, and poor quality [NOT watchable, but still plays]
But when the burner is in FW v0050 my DVD player woun't play them at all ?

I will leave my FW @ ver.0048 if I can fix the quality problem of the play back of the movies, but I don't know what is causing the problem... the DVD-R's I burn play fine on both my computer drives [DVD-ROM - (lite-on 166s) & DVD+-RW (BTC IDE1004)]

Strange but tru

I recently upgraded my Panasonic RP62 to firmware v.073 from v.051...

The reason i decided to upgrade my firmware is because I am having a hard time getting my Panasonic to play DVD-R's (the drive clearly states that it is capable of playing DVD-R's), I have been using Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 4.7GB, 4X media (which I was told was one of the best types of DVD-R media around)...

This media plays fine in other stand alone DVD players I have in my house, one of them is a sony. But, I can't get the Panasonic to accept it, I thought the firmware upgrade would help, but it didn't.
...

Ok,
I have now tried the following DVD-R media :
FujiFilm
Memorex
Imation
Taiyo Yuden

I also just tryed a DVD+R by fujifilm... and guess what, IT WORKED (no bitset either)!

This is really strange, the Panasonic RP62 spec's say it can only read DVD-R's NOT DVD+R and yet it will play my burned DVD+R ?

Why is this happening ? I can't get a DVD-R to work for the life of me, yet the first DVD+R i tried worked and its not even supposed to...

How does this make sence ?

Thanks

My computer drives:
DVD-ROM - (lite-on 166s) - Used to rip the DVD's
DVD+-RW - (BTC IDE1004) - Used to burn the DVD-R's and DVD+R's

BTW - Both drives have the latest FirmWare

ok, I have done some media tests using K-Probe, I have heard that your not supposed to use K-probe with a Lite-On DVD-ROM drive and only a Burner drive but it worked anyways...
I tested out the media I have been using and here are the results...
All the DVD's are either the original or burns of Billy Madison:
1. DVD-ROM (original)
2. DVD+R Fuji-Film 4x- This did work in my player
3. DVD-R Imation 2x
4. DVD-R Memorex 4x
5. DVD-R Taiyo Yuden 4x
The only one that played in my Panasonic RP62 was #2 "DVD+R Fuji-Film 4x"
---
1. DVD-ROM (original)

---
2. DVD+R Fuji-Film 4x

---
3. DVD-R Imation 2x

---
4. DVD-R Memorex 4x

---
5. DVD-R Taiyo Yuden 4x

The only one that comes close to the FujiFilm DVD+R is the Memorex DVD-R, but it still doesn't beat it...

Now does this mean their is a problem with my BTC Burner, with burning DVD-R media or is it a fact that DVD-R media isn't as good as DVD+R media ?

I am just trying to figure out what is wrong with my drive(s)...
please help
