DRW1004IM reads/writes CDRs but no DVDs/DVDRs

Hi,

(posted this before in big bad "BTC Dual Format DVD Writer" thread, but a new thread seemed more appropriate after all)

About two weeks after I bought my BTC DRW1004IM (firmware 039, MediaMarkt in Amsterdam) it does only seem to read or write CDs/CDRs. Thats right, it even does not read regualr DVDs I have, let alone DVD-Rs. To be precise: when I put a DVD in the drive Windows Explorer shows it as empty.

I've tried the following things (according to the well known First Aid kit) without succes:
- Flashed firmware 045
- Tried the drive alone on secondairy IDE master or slave
- flashed my motherboard with the latest BIOS and checked proper BIOS settings.
- installed the latest drivers for my motherboard
- flashed firmware 043 (I recently noticed there was no 045 anymore on BTC's site, but 043, so I guessed perhaps 045 had some problems)
- kept fingers crossed a lot while flashing.

Current Nero Infotool report:

Hi orbital,

Seems like you have already tried everything possible. Some other users have reported the same problem so the drive may just be defective. Hopefully Marco will read your post and advise accordingly.

Cheers,
Peter

That's right. This problem has been reported before and can't be fixed with a firmware update.

Please return the drive to your dealer and get a replacement.

After you receive a replacement, I recommend to first update the firmware to V0043 or later, then start installing software and burning DVDs.

What's the reason for so many drives failing to recognize DVDs after a while with these old firmwares? Some internal EEPROM-data that is accidentally overwritten?

I'm just curious, because I had the same problem with my drive.

We're not 100% sure, but we think it's pickup head burn out due to accidental laser power overload. V0043 firmware has overload protection.
