Dead BTC 1004IM - Any chance of resurrection?

In my work we had used for sometime a BTC 1004IM with no problems until yesterday it went dead. Now it doesn't read or write dvd's but only reads cd's. A "clever" coworker had the brilliant idea to open it and the warranty flied from the window.
There was a power failure the night before (maybe it has something to do with the problem). Anyway after installing the latest firmware and trying it in two pc's still nothing.
Can anyone tell me if there is something that can be done to fix it or is it bye, bye BTC?
Has anyone had a replacement of a drive that was opened?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

What was the firmware? If it was 0039 or earlier, then the firmware caused the drive to burn out. I had such a drive, and even opened it up as you did (removed the 'void warranty' lable). But I returned it to BTC and they quickly replaced it no questions asked.

Thanks for your reply blueman2. The firmware was ver. 0048 and now i updated it to ver. 0050.
When you say that you returned your drive to BTC, do you mean your local dealer? Where i work (Greece) the drive was bought from a local shop along with some other things and i'm told that it cannot be returned. Can you be a liitle more specific about the procedure you used to get the replacement?

I just discovered that the drive can in fact write on cd's.
Is this normal to be able to write cd's but to not recognise or write dvd's?

What, your dealer won't accept a defect drive? Dealer's warranty period expired? Get an RMA from the manufacturer and return your drive there.

Sounds like a problem with your laser. Probably beyond a user's possibilities.
