Re: Utorrent Vs Azureus

Utorrent 1.6 is better by far, imo, unless you need the extensive set of features available for Azureus.

I used Azureus for years - got tired of the bloated, slow performing enormity of the app. I heard about Utorrent, and tried it, and now at 1.6, think it is the best solution out there for most users, again, who don't need those advanced features.

I'm totally biased now. Used to be an Azureus fanboy, now I'm totally in favor of Utorrent.

Re: Utorrent Vs Azureus

I also used to be a Azureus fanboy until I switched to µTorrent right when it came out. Since then I've never gone to anything else. You can use Azureus if you like using up a lot of memory, use a bunch of useless features and have slightly lower download speeds. µTorrent is for people that want speed, stability and an overall good client. µTorrent is the way to go!

Re: Utorrent Vs Azureus

Well imo, i havnt used Azureus but before using Utorrent i used Bitcommet ( my first ever ) and now ive got used to utorrent and understanding of how it works i like it allot, the thing i like about utorrent is the memory it uses, its unbelivable..

Also people might not agree with me but i also like the graphs and options you can look at to see how well ur download is doing,

So thats why opinion, we need more votes people

I prefer Azureus.

I've never managed to get a download started with Utorrent. And yes, I have configured port forwarding properly.

Re: Utorrent Vs Azureus

what about the "safepeer" option? though i know utorrent has something like this.....i always felt that the azureus team is larger, and keeps up on important updates better than the microtorrent team....

I can't really say. I use bolth. I use uTorrent a lot, but I think my bandwidth has been capped. So none of them download.

Re: Utorrent Vs Azureus

Well i am using Azureus and it is running perfect i dont have in mind changing to another, as uTorrent and Azureus nearly have the same performance but one of the programs take a lot of CPU that is Azureus and the other is eating all your memory that is uTorrent.
But have a look at this link and make your own choice http://gomeler.com/2006/04/23/an-int...rrent-clients/

Re: Utorrent Vs Azureus

I use both but mainly Azureus. A lot of the problems people have is bandwidth. When i had 5Mbps service i couldn't hardly surf the net and have a client running but with 10Mbps i have no problems at all. Friend of mine has DSL 1.5Mbps and he has to turn down his down/uploads to surf when using either client.

Re: Utorrent Vs Azureus

Azureus is slow and bloated, uTorrent is small, fast, easy to use and has a large amount of features.

But uTorrent for some reason much slower at me than BitComet. For example when there's a torrent that has 25 seeds and 300 peers and the maximum allowed connections for a torrent are 70, uTorrent connects to 3-4 seeds and 60 peers (but 30 of them has only 0.0-0.5 % of the torrent) and the resulting speed is aroung 5kb/s.
However when i load the same torrent in BitComet, it connects to 15 seeds and 50 peers (who have already downloaded a large portion of the file) and speed is aroung 50-70 kb/s. So for this reason i recently moved from uTorrent to BitComet.

Re: Utorrent Vs Azureus

That is because Bitcomet has some leeching features, and thus it is banned on some trackers.

I mainly use BitSpirit, but out of the two, definitely Azureus. uTorrent is owned by BitTorrent now which is partly owned by the MPAA, I definitely wouldn't trust uTorrent.

Re: Utorrent Vs Azureus

You can argue about the topic til death if you want to...
Everyone who still uses BitSpirit, BitLord and god knows what should upgrade switch to either uTorrent or Azureus. Linux/BSD users should consider Azureus or rtorrent and OSX has a few to choose from where Azureus and Xtorrent seems to be among the better ones. Most other clients (I may have missed one or two) are highly outdatded, abuses the tracker itself and/or sends corrupted data. Many clients also dont support encryption which is highly recommended for speed reasons. For those saying that client X is faster than client Y I'd say that is pretty much bullshit, it all depends on what peers/seeders you connect to and how aggressive the client is towards others. In general Azureus, uTorrent and rTorrent are pretty fair to each other. Azureus, uTorrent and rTorrent may also provide a little speed boost due to support for encryption but it taxes the CPU slightly more. Also keep in mind that both Azureus and uTorrent supports DHT (rTorrent doesnt) which is really nice on public torrents in case the tracker goes down. Keep in mind that Azureus and uTorrent uses different algorithms meaning that they wont find each other, you can though thru another Azureus/uTorrent user depending on what client you use. This feature is although requires a bit of pressing power on a router which most routers for home use lack resulting in a dead router after a couple of minutes/hours or a deadly slow one so I'd suggest that you disable it. A few routers can handle it though perfectly like Linksys WRT54GS (V1-V2 mainly) and Asus WL-500G Deluxe/Premium-series although you may need a 3rd party firmware. Also use reasonable setting, connecting to 1000 peers wont make things go faster on a 4mb connection or whatever you have. Roughly I'd say 80 global connections per mbit (and 80 max per torrent) and dont go over 250 if you have a router even if you have a faster connection than 4Mb, it will most likely slow it down to turtle speed and eventually hang. As for upload slots I'd say that you should have roughly 4 per torrent if you have less than 5 mbit otherwise bump it up to the double.
Regarding the clients themselves Azureus uses in general more memory than uTorrent although feature-wise its much better and it actually does have a disk cache that works and they use about the same amount of CPU. General misconeption regarding Azureus is that its slow, mostly because people have an old Java Run-Time installed and doesnt read the docs. FWIW I have an old Athlon 500Mhz computer that runs Azureus among a lot of other apllications perfectly fine. uTorrent doesnt on the other hand use Java at all, it free and all but keep in mind that its closed source and Bittorrent Inc which works with MPAA and RIAA have bought it meaning that you may get some rather nasty surprises later on. No "ET phone home"-issues have yet been reported though. rTorrent is an excellent (text based) client for Linux/BSD which has little memory footprint and is also like Azureus open source, only downside is that it doesnt support DHT yet.

And btw, bandwidth issues are either caused by your router and/or by improperly configured clients. If you router supports QoS (the ones mention above does with 3rd party firmware) use it and configure it properly and you'll be fine. Otherwise set upload to roughly max upload speed to 80% of your total upload. Be aware though that if you have multiple computers you'll need a router supporting QoS if you want it to work smoothly.

Re: Utorrent Vs Azureus

i have used both.... i pick Utorrent BY FAR ... as it's really small and seems overall faster.... just a flat out better program.... plus you can just run it from the .exe file as it dont need to be installed.

although the comments about about how utorrent is partly owned by the MPAA ... does make me worry a little about it now

Hence the reason I've just stayed with BitLord. I know it's not one of the clients mentioned by Syko at the beginning of the thread, but I just kinda felt it bears saying. Yes, I know it's locked out by some trackers. I still get what I need in the end though. I don't know if anyone can tell it because I DO use BitLord, but I maintain a respectable U/D ratio none-the-less, just on principle.

BitLord is based on a very old version of BitComet (in fact it IS a very old BitComet with adware added) and its probably the worst client ever. Id strongly recommend to switch to BitComet. The interface is the same, but you get some important features like DHT and protocol encryption

Re: Utorrent Vs Azureus

BitLord (considered spywayre too) and Bittornado users should both upgrade to either Azureus or uTorrent.

@ NBR

I'd say that Azureus bypasses by far when it comes to remote admin, WebUI (which works very good an reliably, XML frontend, IRC frontend, Telnet frontend) and IMO the RSS reader works slightly better too.
