physical sharing

Hi, I was wondering if it would be legal to give away CD's. For example, I have pile of disks I don't ever look after anymore. Would it be OK to dump them on a site and give them to anyone who has interest in them? And have other people do the same? And have some sort of rating list of 'good people' and people that don't participate like the ratings at ebay.

Maybe the idea is stupid, but I get irritated about all the lawsuits. Even though I don't actually use anything like kazaa or such. I think companies should innovate if they fail to keep up with current standards or else bleed to death. I mean no one is obligatory to buy a typewriter next to a computer if they only want to type a letter in Word. So update your typewriter so it's better than word or die.

Second issue of pain is the royalties that go to the artists. Well, they're not exactly suffering in poverty, are they. And the artists who are, aren't of interest to the companies.

Re: physical sharing

Depends on the country (read http://www.euro-copyrights.org/ )

I'd say that if you hand over backups to people who don't have the originals...it is illegal. But read the above-linked website for all the legal stuff...

If you live in the USA, and these are commercial discs (cd / DVD ) or you personal back-ups of discs you own.......it's illeagle, period. If they are back-up of discs you no longer own..it's already illeagle just to own the b-ups....

Personally, I agree that it's bullshit, but thats the legal wind here in the states...

IC, I always thought it was legal to resell (or give away) a product that was legally bought. Just like I can resell my computer or my garden hose.

You were referring to the originals, rather than the backups...
Sorry, my misunderstanding.

If you are selling (giving away) the originals (and not keep a backup copy), there should be no problem as far as I know.

Re: physical sharing

My misunderstanding also, I thought by your original post that you were physically uploading tracks to a website to give away for free. If what you meant was, upload a list of old cd's (originals) with the idea of free cd's email me if you want any of these rather than me throw them away.........thats legal. It's still not legal to keep back-ups of the originals though....
