Re: Limewire problems

So far I have not seen any news about Limewire (such as server raids, network attacks, etc) other than them recently countersuing the RIAA.

The only thing that comes to mind is an ISP related issue. Just out of curiosity, do all your friends with this issue use the same Internet service provider? If so, this is a sign that the ISP has set up restrictions on its network to limit P2P related traffic.

Re: Limewire problems

well see i've got limewire as well and we all are on the same ISP....its a cable network and no restrictions ....so i'm thinking they might have some corrupt files or something they have downloaded ....
One of the guys says...he always got an excellent connection (all green) but now its just one or two green bars is as good as he gets....

i told them all to uninstall and download the newest version.....they did that..but still the same issues...

It has been quite a while since I used Limewire, so can't really comment on its downloading performance over the past month or two. I loaded up the version I have, which is fairly old (4.10.9) to see how long it takes to connect. For the first 30 seconds or so, it shows that it is connecting to the network. For the next 30 seconds, it jumps to 3 bars and finally around 15 seconds later, it shows excellent with 5 bars. As a second attempt, I closed out of Limewire and opened it up again. It had a 2 bar poor connection in 15 seconds, and increased one bar each 15 seconds until ~50 seconds after launching when it showed all 5 bars lit.

The files they may be trying to obtain could likely be the culprit also, particularly if they have only been trying the same file(s). One thing worth checking also is attempting to redownload a couple of files that they had no issue with before to see if these also give the same issue.

Finally, a simple test for bandwidth throttling is to try and download a commonly shared file. For example, search Limewire for "Limewire 4.12" and download the file "LimeWireWin4.12.4" (most common one listed on my search results), which has a file size of 2,806KB. I know you may have a later version, but just want to use this as a test download example, since this is one download where you should not experience a slow transfer rate. During my download, it peaked at around ~110KB/sec and took 37 seconds to download from the time I clicked 'Yes' to confirm the executable warning, so if your peak transfer rate is much lower than this (assuming your broadband is at least 1Mb), then there is likely something restricting your connection.

There should not be more than one software firewall running on a system as there is a very good chance they will conflict with each other and have seen this happen before. On the other hand, if the user has a hardware firewall (such as in their router) and a software firewall, there generally is no risk of both causing problems with each other, however, what rules are set up on one must also be set up on the other. Generally most router firewalls outperform the software firewalls what it comes to blocking incoming attacks, with the exception of on any ports the user specifically opened. The only main thing hardware firewalls don't do (which most software firewalls do) is warn if a new application is trying to access the Internet, but generally a good virus checker would catch most unwanted malicious software, viruses or worms before it even gets a chance to run and start accessing the Internet.

Then again, I cannot see firwalls causing the issue they are experiencing, unless they all installed or updated their firewalls around the time they first started noticing problems with Limewire.

Re: Limewire problems

Yep, same problem, about a week or two ago, all of a sudden it's like my searches and downloading of movies is cut off or downloads at a low speed. Downloading music is still mega fast for me...weird.

Re: Limewire problems

I've been having problems with Frostwire recently (both Limewire and Frostwire use the same network). I can still search and get search results but I can't download anything.

I'm guessing that something is up if other people are also having problems.

Nope, that can't be it.

I've tried Azureus and Ares and both are working fine so the problem must lie with the Limewire/Frostwire network.

Re: Limewire problems

I've had issues. I start downloads then they stop. It use to see a firewall that I never had up. Now with pro it quit doing that but I still have downloads that don't finish all the time.

Re: Limewire problems

Try using "Frostwire" instead...same network and its interface looks virtually identical to LW and operates almost identically as well. It's freeware and spyware-free. Get it here:

I've got FrostWire. It hasn't worked for me for a while now.

The last time I used it successfully was all the way back in October.

Yeah I'm having limewire problems, only, limewire fails completely to initialize. I try to open limewire and nothing happens, I get the file loading icon, then it goes away and nothing appears. Please send your response to my email at, michaels_little_big_boom@hotmail.com. Thanks.

Re: Limewire problems

With just a standard install of Limewire (free edition) on my system and no further configuration, it will show one bar for about 30 seconds and then gradually increase until all 5 bars are shown over the next few seconds, with a firewall symbol shown on the globe next to the signal meter. When I reconfigure my router to map a port for Limewire or change its port to an existing port number I've already mapped and restart Limewire, it takes about the same length to connect and after about 30 seconds, the firewall symbol disappears.

So this seems to indicate that the regular version will still get a good connection if there is no issue with the Internet Connection. The only thing this version generally rarely says for its connection status is Turbo charged, as this is more limited to the pay Limewire Pro version.
