Just download the plugin for winamp and play them (or make .wav files of them)

Re: Downloaded .flac files, what's that ?

Yep- mp3 is simpler, but flac is lossless! I much prefer flac on my Audigy 2 ZS + Altec Lansing ADA-995 5.1 setup!

Re: Downloaded .flac files, what's that ?

I couldn't tell the difference on my old system, but i can tell the difference on my current system. FLAC has a fuller sound and is very crisp. MP3's sound alot muddier and you lose quality on the higher frequencies. But you have to sacrifice a hellava lotta hard disk space - about 10 times!

@ red ripper: have u used the lame 3.90.2 encoder with API (-- alt present insane)?

It is better than flac and only takes up a little bit more than aps.

Just a point - how can it be better than flac? Flac is lossless! Flac is exactly the same as the data on the CD, only its compressed using lossless algorithms so absolutely no quality is lost!

Although if API is better than APS it'll be pretty good (as APS quality was pretty good). I'll give it a try.

U won't notice any diff on ur pc or an old player .. but on newer hi-fi players offering proper amplification of all frequencies , it will be a lot different .
A 192 kb/s mp3 wud sound a lot better than a 128 kb/s mp3 on these players .

Re: Downloaded .flac files, what's that ?

Your looking at about 20-40 meg a track for flac. The quality is superb, but you are unlikely to hear any difference compared with 192 (or even 128) kbps mp3 on any portable device to date. You need yourselves a decent sound card and a decent set of speakers to notice anything.

Re: Downloaded .flac files, what's that ?

ok, thanks so considering most of my mp3s are used on my iPod it wouldnt be worth the masisve amount of space needed for .flac files, .aac is the one i am considering.

Just use foobar 2000 to play them, you might find yourself using it for a lot of other stuff too!

I can HEAR a difference between any 2 files, the real question is whether or not I care.
