| Anyone afraid to use Limewire? I used it for years, but now I am afraid to and deleted off both computers because about 30 miles from me, a woman is currently being sued by limewire for downloading illegal music. WTF!!! Is that not what people use limewire for? Limewire they say is not illegal, just downloading the music and stuff is, so what would you use it for? Anyway, the news is saying limewire is suing this woman because her kids donwloaded music. I don't know for how long or how much, but when I did some research on limewire, it says the RIAA is suing limewire. Maybe limewire is scared, so they are going to turn in some of their users and sue them to make some money to pay them off? This woman also said that before this happened, she received a letter in the mail requesting her IP address which she ignored and threw away. Just wondering if there is any safe p2p site out there, or should I try a torrent site. I have actually tried a torrent site, but could not get it to work no matter what I did. |

| Re: Anyone afraid to use Limewire? There's no safe P2P, only safe countries to use it in. Although I would suggest that using a bittorrent client on a private site would be about as safe as it gets.

| Re: Anyone afraid to use Limewire? Well, first off, I used to use Limewire, but I found there was always a fairly large threat of malware/viruses. That's when I got into using torrent clients (uTorrent, Azureus, etc.) and sites like Demonoid & The PirateBay. These "public" trackers (anyone can join for free) are safer than Limewire IMO, but there's still risks involved. (depending what you're doing, your country's laws, still some malware, etc.) The safest sites to use, as I have learned over the years, are "private" torrent sites. That is, the only way you can get into one of these sites is if a member there invites you in. I've found that these sites tend to be very well moderated & "policed"; meaning I've yet to see any malware on any of the ones I use, and legal issues seem very few and far between. There are always risks, but there are ways to minimize them.

| Re: Anyone afraid to use Limewire? There is a lot of junk on Limewire, as Woodenhead stated, although you can 'block hosts' and mark certain retrievals as "junk." While one can debate the usefulness of both features, if you're concerned about 'privacy,' then use the Limewire options well--such as only sharing a complete download and then moving a completed download to another folder if you don't want to share (that's the consensus here and elsewhere, that if you don't want problems, don't share, or don't share 100s of things [the fewer the better]). Of course, Limewire is probably better for finding certain music and perhaps certain videos, although you'll probably find more using Emule and possibly Azureus.

But that's also why LimeWire already got sued, and agreed to implement blocklists.. Still, I need to agree that LimeWire itself doesn't alone bring people to share copyrighted files, and that any kind of information technology, be it CD-R, USB-Sticks, Computer Networks or Servers for Hosting files are very often used that way. Give a user a high capacity HDD, what does he want to store? LimeWire is different from stores like AllofMp3.com that exclusively and directly sell copyrighted products illegally. LimeWire gives you the ability.. it's up to you how to use it. I would still think there's another problem: LimeWire is optimized for sharing music tracks, I would say. Which music track is not copyrighted, but still well-known? This is where LimeWire get's it power from, and almost everytime it is copyrighted music having these fitting attributes.. Quote:
If it was the RIAA, this seems to be a strategy by the music industry to make people listen: report about cases in their region, with a personal story. Read about it: RIAA Shifts Lawsuit Strategy Quote:

Best advice ever!! Anything and everthing is better as simple as that. You will find most of the releases at these kind of sites first as well. No disrespect but the only thing good about demonoid and piratebay and similar sites is the amount of torrent they offer and hard to find torrents. Private sites do maintain strict but simple rule. All you got to do is give back what you take.

| Re: Anyone afraid to use Limewire? Want my advice? Shut the fudge up! Shut the fudge up! Shut the fudge up! Shut the fudge up! Shut the fudge up about downloading stuff you cleary know is illegal. Shut the fudge up about what's the best download tool for pirated stuff. Shut the fudge up about private and public. There is no private or public. You are on the internet and anybody with the right legal authority can see everything you are doing on the internet. Shut the fudge up about your rights. You have no rights on the internet. None. Shut the fudge up about how everybody is doing it. This doesn't magically make it legal. Shut the fudge up fooling yourselves. Do you really really think that total internet newbies can outwit the intelligence of the police, RIAA, MPAA or otherwise? You can't because you have no right doing what you are doing with those networks. You haven't been caught because you are careful, you haven't been caught because you are just not that interesting to them. Keep talking about it and you will be interesting. Keep doing it and perhaps you will be lawsuit material. Talk about the technique, not about what you are going to do with it. God you people are stupid. |
