I dont know, my ASUS 5232AS and Lite-On 52327S are both great burners (the ASUS is one of the few drives that can copy and play Tegas backups) however they both just wont play SafeDisc after 3.10 (unless with CloneCD emulation).

[quote=Cantab]Prince of Persia Warrior Within
(SafeDisc 4.00.001)

Alcohol 120% 1.9.2 build 1705: SafeDisc 2/3 profile

Hi guys,

Yesterday I bought NEC DV-5800C and NEC ND-3500A(G). For the newcomers the first is a DVD-ROM and the second is a DVD+-R+-RW(DL).
Since then I backed up with TOTAL SUCCESS Syberia I, Syberia II, Need For Speed Underground II, Rome: Total War and ... PRINCE OF PERSIA Warrior Within.

All the above using the DVD-ROM as reader (SafeDisc 2/3 profile) and the ND-3500A(G) as writer (same profile, MAX speed).

Note: None of the above plays on the writer (which is expected without an ATIP hidder, BUT all of them play just FINE on the reader).

I recommend buying reader and writer of the same brand. I read that the same really good results you can achive using a combination of LiteOn devices.

Note II: There is no problem at all playing PRINCE OF PERSIA Warrior Within from Alcohol's fake device (virtual DVD-ROM). I do not think that up to this point there is a protection that can trace Alcohol. On the other hand CloneCD is practically useless on SafeDisk above 3.15. The games refuse to play even from the original CD.

Re: Safedisc 4.00.000 Successes and Non-Successes

Thanks for your assitance...invaluable.

However, one answer still eludes me. I am running a Toshiba P35-S629 with a super multi-drive;

D: MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-820S
E: AXV CD/DVD-ROM

which came with the system. I'm using the Matshita for both reading and writing at 2x and 2X with the Safedisc 2/3. However, after using both CloneCD and Alcohol 120% I am still unable to run the game (Prince of Persia- The Warrior Within) on this machine. Are you suggesting that I purchase an external CD drive to run the backup.

Thanks again.

Re: Safedisc 4.00.000 Successes and Non-Successes

Is the Plextor Premium a better all arround drive for this protection? I have Alcohol for burning it but have no space to buy a separate reader as copying source. I have seen that some members have copyed this SD reading and writting with the Premium but no members have copyed it using the LTR-52327S as a source reader.

I have the same drive on my Laptop. It's not bad but I sincerely doubt it can write SafeDisc 2/3/4 properly (can't even do RAW). On the other hand, it is an unfussy reader, so backups that won't play e.g. in my Toshiba drive will play in this one.

Re: Safedisc 4.00.000 Successes and Non-Successes

Well guys,

I am not that experienced in the backup 'business' but as far as I know, writers cannot read backups without an ATIP hidder. From my experience I can tell you that there was no problem until safedisk 3. For example AOM and the TITANS worked just fine (both use safedisk 2.9). When the version 3 appeared thinks changed a bit. First of all the original game before running does a quick scan in the registry for emulation software (it traces CloneCD BUT NOT alcohol, even the newest 4.00.010). So, remove all this programs before trying to run the game.
Before trying to write the image, first try to play it from the the fake drive (that is the AVX device).
If so far everything is cool, try to burn it (personally I find Alcohol by far better than GamesXCopy, CloneCD and the Blind Suite).
I am not in a position to tell you for sure that if you buy an external drive the copy will be readable but worth trying it.
BE CAREFUL to find on the net the brand of the mechanism used in your MASTUSHITA drive (e.g. ASUS uses PIONEER, SONY uses LiteOn e.t.c.) and then procced to the purchase.
Hope the above helped.
Please let me know ...

Could somebody try making a mini-image of a SafeDisc 4.0 game and see if it works?

They probably added the ability to customize where and how many times it checks for the protection. IIRC, there where a few Safedisk protected games a year or so ago that would check at each level, not just at game start. I think Safedisk is made customizable in this way for the game publishers, just not many utilize it.

It'll have to be taken on a game by game basis.

Re: Safedisc 4.00.000 Successes and Non-Successes

I have to query the results as posted by iamthatonedude.
Safedisc 4, as modified for EA, checks the reader to see if it is a Liteon, if it is it won't run a copy.

My results for Sims 2 University Expansion.

SafeDisc 4.00.001

Alcohol 120% v1.9.2 (Build 1705) Safedisc 2/3 Profile.

Reader Liteon ltd-166s

Writer Lliteon 482448s

Read and write at MAX.

Works in TEAC Cdr-55s

Does not work in Liteon ltd 166s, Liteon 482448S or Pioneer A05

Re: Safedisc 4.00.000 Successes and Non-Successes

Query away my friend. I have been playing that backup for a couple days now with no troubles. It is indeed a liteon 166s that I am running my backup from.

I will say this: That post was my second attempt. My first attempt everything was set the same except I read it at 4x instead of 1x. While I was installing the first attempt it would freeze a little over halfway way through the installation (still installing from the first disc), it said that it could not read some file and everytime I tried to 'retry' it wouldn't get any farther. I have been using RiData (Ritek) 48x CD-Rs as my media. I trashed that one, gave up for a day and played from the original disc. The next day I decided to try it again as I don't like being beaten down by a protection! First I uninstalled University and restarted my computer, then I did what I posted above and everything has been working like a charm. No problems whatsoever. The installation of 'The Sims 2' is done from a backup of the CD version of the game. Also, I noticed the initial load time is a few seconds longer than the official disc, but to me that's no biggie.

Re: Safedisc 4.00.000 Successes and Non-Successes

Sorry for the double post, but Black Diamond got my curiosity sparked. I tested Sims 2: University backup play disc in my other two drives, as well as in my litey again for good measure. Results (See sig for model #'s and firmware releases):

Litey: Loaded (a few seconds slower than the official disc) and played the game.

Plex Premium: Loaded (regular speed) and played the game.

Philips DVD+R/RW: Failure. Loaded the splash screen and asked to put disc in drive after a couple minutes of searching.

I dunno where that info about it not playing in Litey's came from Black Diamond, but I sure am having a good time playing it in my Litey!

Re: Safedisc 4.00.000 Successes and Non-Successes

I've just backed up Sonic heroes - Safedisc 4.00.000 SUCCESSFULLY! No one else on the forum seems to have mentioned this game, given that it is one of the first to incorporate v4.00.

Read + Wrote with LiteOn SOHW-1633S + Alcohol 120%. Successful. Fantastic drive!
Funny, but the image file loaded into a virtual drive would not work - stated 'Please insert correct Cd/Dvd and press OK.' Maybe virtual drives are something programmed to be hated by Safedisc 4?

Copy also works in LitOn SOHD-167T. Ignore media type is only emulation. Strange also that doom 3 backup won't work in this drive but will in the SOHW-1633s, and that is Safedisc 3.2!
