| Let's talk Quality!!! Ther's no question that it's cool to have the entire DVD just like the original. But sometimes, it's just not worth the time, effort or especially the picture quality. Case in point. Now that I'm armed and dangerous with JDOBBS's guide, I've been doing a lot of experimenting. Here are a couple of examples: The Patriot- first I backed it up with IC 7. it looked pretty crappy and the commentary with Mel Gibson etc was equally crappy. I decided to see what I could do with DVD2one, IFOEDIT and IFOUPDATE. Now that I'm an expert(LOL LOL) using JDOBBS's guide, I figured I could do better. Well, to make a long story very short...NOT!!! It was easy enough to shrink everything down and have it work properly but the quality just wasn't worth it. I opted to just keep the movie with DVD2one and the quality is outstanding. Pearl Harbor disk 2- Same thing, first with IC 7, it looked crappy, especially the "making of Pearl", it looked sorta' like a WMS file. Then, I tried doing it myself again but his time I decided to merge the movie VOBs with the "making of" VOBs. The image quality was certainly better but the "making of" had no sound. Apparently, that portion of the DVD was in Dolby 2 channel instead of Dolby digital or DTS, like the main movie. Unfortunately, my expertise fell flat here. LOL But the real moral of this story is that it seems that when the size of extras are close to, equal to or larger than the main movie, it's just not worth sacrificing video quality just to have the full disk. Whether it's with IC 7 or DVD2one. As with "The Patriot", I ended up just doing the movie with DVD2one for "Pearl 2" and because of it's small size, I believe it lost no quality. It seems that the ideal candidates for full disk backup either have smallish main movies VOBs or take up almost the whole disk. Also, I've found that for me, whenever I use DVD2one to transcode at less that 3300 or so, pixellation starts to creep in. So, now if I can't get a full disk while keeping the main movie at about 3300 or better, I just do the movie. Mike |

Better get one soon and the prices are reasonable too. You're missing out big time on the DVD backup scene! Ahhh...that thrilling Kodak moment when I made my first successfull backup. Couldn't wait to brag about to my buddies. I believe it was the Scorpion King. ![]() | ||
