Layer Change

Hi...

...I don't know if anyone ever noticed, but DVD2one doesn't get rid of the layer change.

It's easy to change with IfoEdit but I'd like to see it as a bug, since it's creating single layer DVD-5 discs...

- start ifoEdit
- open the "VTS_01_0.IFO"
- click on "VOB Extras"
- deselect all except "Correct original IFO files"
- click OK

To fix pseudo layer breaks:

- load VTS_01_0.IFO into IfoEdit.
- Go to "Vob Extra"
- uncheck everything except "Correct Original IFO files" and "Create New IFO files"
- Select a temporary folder
- Go
- Quit IfoEdit
- Copy the new IFOs into the original's folder, overwriting the exiting ones
- Open IfoEdit, load the new VTS_01_0.IFO
- Do "Get VTS sectors"

That should do it.

To pedah,
I don't think this is considered a bug because even some original single layer DVD movies have a layer change in them. There are also some dual layer DVD movies that have 2 layer changes in them when I think they should only have 1 layer change being a dual layer DVD movie.

This retention of layer break info: has anyone experienced a pause when playing back a DVD2One disc as a result of it?

See my thread 'momentary pause'

Ummm...you know that this sounds kinda ridiculous...

A layer change is a laser adjustment of the DVD-Player to read the layer under another. And SINGLE layer tells me that there's only 1 at all...

pedah, you don't seem to understand. Single layer DVD movies aren't supposed to have layer breaks because it's a single layer DVD. However there are some single layer DVD movies that have a layer break, but this is not actually a layer break, this is what I call a dummy chapter (a chapter that contains nothing). Now if the DVD movie has a dummy chapter or not then it should still play the DVD movie properly. Dual layer DVD movies only have 1 layer break, but there are dual layer DVD movies that have 2 layer breaks. The first is actually a layer break and the second is a dummy chapter. What DVD2one does is make a 1:1 GOP structure but with a lower bitrate so that the movie can fit on a 4.7GB DVD-R. So if a dual layer DVD movie has 1 or 2 layer breaks then the resulting DVD movie that was re-encoded by DVD2one should have the same number of layer breaks as the original.

You must have changed something else, I think.

IFOEdit, used in the way described earlier in this thread, cannot remove subtitles. Silly question I know, but were they there in the first place?

there are no silly questions.

had german and english subtitles. ifo-edited, german subs were still there, english couldn_t be seen.

standalone (pio 444) let's you choose english, but they don't show up on the screen. checked dvd on ifo-edit again, says there are english subtitles. tried it on software player (windvd 4), also let's you choose engish subtitles but again, they won't show.

hmmm...

Will Layer Change screw up video playback

If I don't remove this 'layer change' and just burn the dvd compliant files made from dvd2one with UDF 1.2 (default in RecordNow) will it not play properly or something?

Does these layer changes when burning a single layer disc screw up the video playback on standalone dvd players?

Not necessarily.

Most of my DVD2one derived discs seem fine. However, 'Reign of Fire' had a distinct pause and at the same time the front panel of the Pioneer player showed 'Search'. This point would would have been the layer break in the original disc.

You may not even notice such a brief pause. Or care.

But, until the matter is resolved in a future release, I shall continue to correct the IFO files manually with IDOEdit. It's a pain as it introduces another step in the process.

I do think with any copy, it's probably worth testing first with a re-writeable disc before going ahead on the final burn.
