The same title that I have been having problems copying using both DVD2ONE and DVDXCOPY, was successfully copied using Instant Copy on the first try with the demo. Size: 8.3 GB Total rip time using DVD Decrypter: 33 minutes Total Encode and burn time using Instant Copy: 213 minutes DVDXCOPY doesn't know how to split a 3 episode DVD properly because of it's poor VIDEO_TS recognition capabilities. The authors admit this and have no recommendation other than, "don't attempt episodic DVD's with our product right now". DVD2ONE, of course produces the "Encrypted Data Detected" error. It also doesn't allow the selection of the remainder of the "episodic" material which is actually the rest of the movie, not extras, or bonus material. Even if one uses the VOBEdit to IfoEdit to DVD2One method to get around this limitation, the "Encrypted Data Detected" error precludes completion of the project. The authors have not responded to this error, so it's hard to say what their take is. The new version produced the same error as 1.0. Instant Copy had no such issues. The quality is very good, with some pixilization in out of focus objects. Considering that the original bitrate was averaging 7200k, I am not at all disapointed in the results.

For all of you with those nasty encrypted errors please tell me A) The title of disc complete (region, distributor etc etc) B) Your OS (incl. service packs) C) The way you ripped the disc We can't reproduce the error here at our testmachine's, but we want to do our very best to fix this problems. But it is very hard to fix problems which we can't reproduce ourselves ![]()

My setup is: *Hardware* Dual 1GHz Motherboard ATI All in Wonder 128 Pro AOpen 12x DVD Rom latest ROM firmware Sony DRU550a 1.0g ROM firmware 1 GB 133 RAM (2) 100 GB Western Digital HDD's at 7200 SB Live 5.1 sound card *Software* DVD Decrypter - Latest version Smart Ripper - Latest version Win2K Pro SP3 ASPI 4.72 layer The DVD title that I'm trying to back up has no region coding, no macrovision, no sub-titles no extras, no 5.1 sound. The title is The National Parks of America - Yellowstone. It's 162 minutes of video footage broken into 3 seasons (summer, fall, winter). Each season is it's own episode. The VIDEO_TS.VOB has the menus for each episode contained within it. I am ripping the DVD the same way I have for every title that I've done to this point (dozens in DVD to SVCD rips). That's why I believe this is not hardware or software related... but title specific. DVD2ONE works on other titles using the exact same setup. I have backed up 6 or 7 titles successfully so far with DVD2ONE. I have re-ghosted this PC with XP Home, XP Pro and NT all in an effort to disprove this. Every OS fails at the exact same point with the same "Encrypted Data Detected" error. I have changed every setting under the sun in DVD Decrypter in the ripping process to "remove" the encrypted data that DVD2ONE says is present. My questions to you and Erwin are: What in the code of DVD2ONE generates this error? Why is the program looking to determine if the source is encrypted data? Does this really matter legally? Pinnacle and 321 obviously don't think so. How does the program determine what is encrypted and what is not? Is this really a generic error code for something else? And... what does Edwin mean when he wrote... "DVD2one detects encrypted data on basis of the info in the PES header. I have seen some decryption source code in which this bit is read using a fixed offset. This can and will cause problems, since there are a lot of disks that have sometimes longer headers. Are you sure that those decrypter programs update that info in the PES headers correctly?"

I'm running WinXP Home with all the updates/service packs on a T-Bird Athalon 900 256 megs SDRAM 30 Gig Quantam Firball HD Soyo SY-K7VTA-B Motherboard (latest Via Drivers) Pioneer 104 DVD-RW (tried with different firmware ect) A-I-W Radeon 32 Meg Video Card SB Live Value Sound Card I've reformatted the HD and tried a clean install of XP Tried ripping from a different DVD-ROM Used both Smartripper and DVDdecrypter in various modes and combinations. The error is not cosistant so a list of titles doesn't mean much. I'm in region 1. I've had success with Chasing Amy, but failed with it on the same set of ripped Vobs as well. Same thing with LotR extended disk 1...failed...then success...then failed. Not always in the same spot. Failed with Shreck and Nightmare Before Christmas, both of which shouldn't even have required re-encoding. As I've said before, I've tried ripping in file mode, and tried ripping as an image then mounting the image...even tried re-ripping from the mounted image...so I don't think the ripping method or hardware has anything to do with it. I really don't think the files are encrypted. Something was mentioned about the amount of data DVD2ONE has to process on the HD and that it might be too much for my system. Is there a way the process could be slowed down? Maybe having a slower option would help.

I just wanted to add that I'd be more than happy to test any modifications that may help and let you know the result. The software is small enough that it could be e-mailed (which is one of the great things about DVD2ONE). Thanks very much for looking into this. LIGHTNING UK, DVDdecrypter is one of my fav pieces of software. I will be making a donation shortly.

No, I cant think of any instance where this would happen. Especially not if the files play just fine off the hdd. We'll just have to wait and see what the dvd2one team come back with. I hope to find out what it is EXACTLY that they do to determine whether it is encrypted or not.
