| Dvd2oneX problem Hello: I am have a problem when I finish using Dvd2oneX. After the program compresses the movie, the computer get's very slow. It slows down when I do the following things: Open a hard drive, access any menu, even if I just pass the cursor over the dock, the computer reacts slowly. After a couple of minutes everything get back to normal. Is this normal????? I am using a ti powerbook 1ghz g4 with 1Gb ram. Thanks. Jonzg |

| you're not alone while dvd2onex seams not to take much cpu it takes alot of the hd and drags the system down but it's kinda stupid to leave your mac untouched until the process is done. maybe rené or erwin can look at this problem ![]()

| The problem is not with dvd2oneX. It is with MacOS X and it's disk caching algorithm. When you access large disk sections as you do when writing a 4GB DVD most operating systems use unused memory to cache that disk section in memory to increase performance. Unfortunately Mac OS X seems to have an algorithm for this that is too aggressive against running applications. That means that it will page out to disk your running, but not active, applications to gather more free memory. This means that when you try to do something with these applications that they need to be paged back in from disk. This paging is extremely inefficient and cause horrible lagging and the performance impact you have seen. Unfortunately I have not found a solution to this problem. There are a couple of work around to this. One is logging out and in forces all your applications to be terminated and the new applications started won't be paged out. Not a lot of help I know but hopefully you now understand what id happening. |

| I notice the same problem as the original poster on my G4/466 with 640 MB RAM, though the problem seems to go away once I quit DVD2OneX (no problem since it's done anyways) and start using my other apps. For about 10-15 seconds, however, the computer is quite unresponsive. This isn't a big problem, and logging out and back in is definitely unnecessary. Hopefully, my shiny new dual 2 GHz G5 w/ 1 GB of RAM will take care of all that.

| I don't experience that on a QuickSilver 867/640MB RAM. it sounds like your cache it getting flushed, although you have more installed RAM than I. Try running CPU Monitor (in your Utilities) and Memory Monitor in your Dock to see what's happening to your CPU and memory. I also find that renicing DVD2OneX lets my machine remain totally responsive to me while ripping. |
