Confused by subtitles

Hello.
I'm a little confused by the subtitle option and hope someone can educate me.
I understand the audio part (I simply tick the box which says 6 channel as this maintains the 5.1 right?), but I always tick each 'English' subtitle (unless it's director's commentary - I don't want this) and don't understand whether I need to or not.
As I'm from the UK do I need to tick these boxes?
My concern is I'll lose things like the elvish subtitles in 'Lord of the Rings'.
Are these tick boxes *just* for other languages of the main dialogue, can I get rid of them all?
Many thanks for any assistance,
Will

It is fairly simple, just check the boxes of things you want to keep

Yeah, that is a very simple premise but perhaps I didn't make my post clear.
I don't want to keep any subtitles other than the ones that are necessary to the movie.
I'm not clever enough to know whether the subtitles in the movie are *just* for our friends all over the world who don't speak English, *or* are *just* for the parts of the movie where, for instance, the elves are speaking elvish language in Lord of the Rings.
All I am asking is, (as I speak English) can I not tick any subtitle boxes and *still* keep 'movie' subtitles?
That still doesn't sound clear, does it?

I know what you`re asking and to be honest I can`t say that for every movie you are guaranteed that the small sections where an alien or elf says a few words and it appears on your screen doesn`t require you to click on subtitles. However, most of the time, the translations are included in the vobs and will appear in the movie without having chosen subtitles.

I always click on subtitles because the file doesn`t take up much space and because sometimes the actors say something I might not understand so I can go back and use subtitles to read what the actor was trying to say.

The good thing about DVD2one, you can transcode the whole movie and check a section to be sure it has the subtitles you want before burning and if it doesn`t, you can transcode again with the subtitles and not have wasted much time.

Aren't those elvish things in the movie stream itself instead of a subtitle?

In other movies i checked the translations are in the normal english subs but with the FORCED flag on.

(for example in SW-eps 2 : CloneWars)

I agree with you CyberMM on this one.

I know that most people are saying that it is best to remove all unrequired streams to leave more space for the film in order to maintain quality. However, I would challenge anybody to find ANY difference in quality to one transcode with subtitles left in and another without.

Subtitles only take up a few MBs and make no difference to the resulting quality of film. Extra audio streams however, take up lots of valuable space and should always be stripped.

Then again there are programs about that will allow you to demux subtitles and from this file you can then check to see if they are Forced at any point during the film. If they are then include that particular stream etc. etc.. but then we're beginning to defeat the whole point of using DVD2one in the first place (i.e. a couple of clicks and you're done)

So, my advice (fwiw) to you silky31 is to keep the English subs. Particularly if there is more than one English set (tick them all) 'cos that can be a fairly good indication that there are Forced Subtitles but in a separate subtitle stream.
