| I've updated one section on in the docs which hasn't been updated on the webpage yet. It should be updated tomorrow by the DVD2DVDR admin. Here's the complete directions minus the pictures. If you want the pics, visit the url. Version 1.4 I've been struggling through many guides on how to backup DVDs for the past few weeks, as I'm sure you all have at one time or another: DVD9 to DVD5, Basic Guide, IfoEdit, etc. I've wasted many hours trying to figure out why one guide works for one DVD and not the next. Many of the guides skip steps because they assume that readers are already well in tuned with some of the programs. Being that there are so many programs, I find it hard to master them all in such a short time. Feeling your pain, I am going to try and outline the exact step that has been successful repeatedly for me. Hopefully this will help many of you that are new or have just been struggling to backup a successful COMPLETE DVD. Using DVD2One and jdobbs program MakeItEasy, this guide will show you how to create an exact backup of your original DVD9 to a DVD5 with one audio track and one language subtitle. Although jdobbs has already outlined the method to do this, I'm including pictures as well as showing you exactly how to pad and transcode multiple VTS Sets to get everything on a DVD5. Programs Needed: DVD Decrypter 3.1.4.0 MakeItEasy 0.12 (jdobbs you are the bomb!) IFOEdit 0.95 DVD2One (Awesome Program) Nero 5.5.9.0 DVD Title: The Bourne Identity Ripping: Start DVD Decrypter, click Mode the select File. Click on Edit and choose Select All. Everything will be highlighted. Pick the location where all the files will be saved. c:\temp\movies\The Bourne Identity\Ori Click on the Decrypt button. Once the rip is done, looking in your specified folder. In my Ori folder I see that the main movie (largest size VTS Set) has a total of 10 files. At the moment, we will only be concerned with VTS_01_1.VOB through VTS_01_7.VOB. Note that your main movie might be on a different VTS Set such as VTS_02 or 03, etc. This is ok. Create another directory and Move all of your main movie VOB files, in my case, VTS_01_1.VOB through VTS_01_7.VOB to another directory for padding. I recommend naming the directory after the VTS Set that you are going to put into the directory. The reason behind the naming convention is that later on you will find out that sometimes, multiple VTS Sets will need to be padded to fit all the extras onto the DVD5 disc when dealing with a very large movie. I created the following directory for all of my VTS_01_x.VOB files to be moved into. c:\Temp\Movies\The Bourne Identity\vts01 In this directory you should now have only the main movie VTS Vob files. In my case, the files are show below. VTS_01_1.VOB VTS_01_2.VOB VTS_01_3.VOB VTS_01_4.VOB VTS_01_5.VOB VTS_01_6.VOB VTS_01_7.VOB In my original directory, c:\temp\movies\The Bourne Identity\Ori, I now have everything that was ripped using DVD Decrypter except for the main movie VTS_01_x.VOB files that have been moved to c:\Temp\Movies\The Bourne Identity\vts01. Padding: From this point on, just leave MakeItEasy open and do not close the program until you are completely done backing up the movie. Open MakeItEasy go to step 2, in the "DVD2One Source:" section click Browse and select the file VTS_01_1.VOB in the directory in which you moved the main movie files to. Mine is c:\Temp\Movies\The Bourne Identity\vts01\. In the "Increase Size By:" section you have to tell MakeItEasy how much padding to make. For those of you that don't understand, from what I gather, padding adds information to your VOB files and or creates new VOB files to make the total size of all of your VOB files larger. DVD2One will then transcode the larger VOB files to a smaller size. Then Unpadding will remove the padding and you will end up with VOB files much smaller then 4.38 Gigabytes, which should then give you more room for all of the extra features. Here is where many people have trouble determining the correct amount of padding needed. In previous post, some people say to use the formula: pad = vts*xtr/(4380-xtr) to determine the amount of padding needed. Although this formula will works great for many movies, use it with caution. Movies with a large total size of VOB files for the main movie cannot use the formula. You will see what I mean in my example below. Formula Breakdown vts = the total amount of your main movie files in Megabytes. In my case, it is the total of all the files in my c:\Temp\Movies\The Bourne Identity\vts01\ folder which is 6.742 Gigabytes in other words 6742 Megabytes. * = means to multiply. Don't mean to insult your intelligence. xtr = the total amount of all the extra files in Megabytes. In my case, it is the total of all the files in my c:\temp\movies\The Bourne Identity\Ori folder which is 1.14 Gigabytes in other words 1140 Megabytes. / = means to divide. Don't mean to insult your intelligence. 4380 = the maximum size that a DVD5 disc can hold in Megabytes. Remember to follow mathematical logical order when using the formula. Parenthesis first then Exponents then Multiplication then Division then Addition then Subtraction. Formula Result for The Bourne Identity pad = 6742*1140/(4380-1140) 6742*1140 = 7,685,880 4380-1140 = 3,240 7,685,880/3,240 = 2372 This means to put in 2372 into the "Increase By Size" (Padding) section of MakeItEasy. I'm sorry to inform everyone that this formula won't work for this DVD because after the padding, the total size of the entire movie VOB files will be over 9 Gigabytes or in other words greater then 8999 Megabytes. A DVD can be up to 9 Gigabytes or 8999 Megabytes. Using the formula for this instance will create a DVD that is 9.114 Gigabyte (9114 Megabytes), which is out of spec and will cause an oversize error in MakeItEasy. You can tell right away if the formula will work by adding the total amount of your main movie files in Megabytes with the padded result from the formula. 6742 + 2372 = 9114 <-- Out of Spec by roughly 115 Megabytes. If the formula produces anything greater then 8999 when you add your main movie VOB files and the padding together, do not use the formula, use the SureShot method in the next section. Else, read below. If the formula works, add another 90 Megabytes to the pad result and use what is left for the padding. This will guarantee that once you are done padding and unpadding, the end result of your total DVD files will be less then 4380. Otherwise, the total DVD files might end up being greater then 4380 which is out of spec. i.e. pad = 5000*1300/(4380-1300) 5000*1300 = 6500000 4380-1300 = 3080 6500000/3080 = 2111 2111+90 = 2201 Use 2021 for the padding value and not 2111. SureShot Way The SureShot way that I use when doing padding for main movie VOB files that have 7 or more VTS files is to work backwards using the following formula. pad = 8999-vts This way, you can be sure that you will never exceed 9 Gigabytes or 8999 Megabytes. Using this formula resulted in a padding of 2257. It is a good idea to use a number lower then what the formula states for sanity check. Enter your padding number into the "Increase By Size" section of MakeItEasy then hit enter and click on "Pad Original VOB Set". In version 0.12, the "Pad Original VOB Set" option won't be usable until you hit enter. When step 2 of MakeItEasy is finished, you will notice that your main movie directory has increased in size and that there are a few more VOB files. The size should now be close to 8999 Megabytes. My C:\Temp\Movies\The Bourne Identity\vts01 directory increased from 6742 Megabytes to 8940 Megabytes. Since 6742 Megabytes is roughly 3/4 of 8999 Megabytes and since I'm padding close to 8999 Megabytes. After the next few steps, I should have main VOB files that are 3/4 of 4380 Megabytes, which is roughly 3285 Megabytes. IFOEdit: Open up IFOEdit and click on "Create IFOs" at the bottom. A new "Create new IFO Files" window will appear. Leave everything as default. Don't worry if you have a multi or single PGC DVD. Set the Output Stream to the first VOB file in your main movie folder. This should be the same folder that MakeItEasy just padded. Check "Same as source" and click ok. After a while IFOEdit will be done and you should have 4 new files in that folder: VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VTS_01_0.BUP AND VTS_01_0.IFO. You will need these files to use with DVD2One. NOTE: If your main movie VOB files are named something other then VTS_01_x.VOB, change them all now to VTS_01_x.VOB. Replace x with the correct number. i.e. Your Movie VOBs VTS_02_1.VOB Change to VTS_01_1.VOB VTS_02_2.VOB Change to VTS_01_2.VOB If you do not do this, later, DVD2One will complain and say, "Unable to Open vobfileset 1 in directory 'C:\Temp\Movies\The Bourne Identity\vts01'." DVD2One: Open DVD2One, select the folder in which you moved the main movie VOB files to as the "Source Directory." This is my C:\Temp\Movies\The Bourne Identity\vts01folder. Then create a new folder following the same naming scheme for your "Destination directory." I called mine C:\Temp\Movies\The Bourne Identity\vts01dest and click next. At the next screen you will see only one video choice since the directory that we are using only has one movie VTS Set in it. Click next to continue to the Audio and Subtitle selection screen. On this screen you will be presented with a lot of choices. Notice that since IFOEdit created new IFO files, all the options in the "Language" and "Subtitle" sections will be unspecified. Usually the first audio option is English. To be safe, open the original VTS IFO file that pertains to your main movie VOBs with IFOEdit and look for the numerical position of the Audio and Subtitle. In my case, since my movie VOBs are VTS_01_1.VOB through VTS_01_7.VOB, I opened the VTS_01_0.IFO file located in c:\temp\movies\The Bourne Identity\Ori with IFOEdit. If your movie file belongs to another VTS set such as VTS_02_1.VOB through VTS_02_4.VOB, you would open the original IFO file that belongs to that set, VTS_02_0.IFO. Start IFOEdit, click Open and select your original main movie VTS IFO file. Do not accidentally open the IFO files that were created by IFOEdit in the previous IFOEdit section shown above. Looking inside the original IFO ( my case VTS_01_0.IFO) file that belongs to your main movie VOBs, under the section "Title Set", you should see the order of the Audio and subtitle. I can see below that both Audio 1 and SubPicture 1 are in English so I will select both the first Audio and Subtitle choices in DVD2One. I always select the first AC3 6ch because I don't have a DTS capable system. From what I heard, AC3 is universal and will work on every player unlike DTS. Although DTS will sound better. Do not do anything else in IFOEdit, Close IFOEdit. Go to DVD2One and click start after you have made the correct Audio and Subtitle choices. The "Progress" screen in DVD2One will appear, when DVD2One is complete, close it. When DVD2One is complete, if you look inside the Destination folder you will notice that there are new BUP, IFO AND VOB files created by DVD2one. NOTE: If your original movie files were not in the VTS_01 set, you notice that DVD2One named everything that it created to VTS_01. Don't be alarmed and continue on. Go back to the MakeItEasy Window and proceed to step 4. Click on "Browse," navigate to the Destination folder that you had used for DVD2One and select the first VOB file and click open. In my case it's C:\Temp\Movies\The Bourne Identity\vts01dest. Don't be alarmed if you cannot see the entire directory in the "DVD2one Destination" section of MakeItEasy. Click Update to remove the padding. This process is quick, MakeItEasy will inform you to proceed to step 5 when complete. Once step 4 for is done, go to step 5. Click on the "Browse" button and navigate to the location of your original main movie IFO file. This would be my c:\temp\movies\The Bourne Identity\Ori directory. In the original directory, you will see many IFO files. Select the IFO file that pertains to your main movie file. Mine is VTS_01_0.IFO. If your main movie VOBs show VTS_02_1.VOB through VTS_02_4.VOB then you would select the VTS_02.IFO file. Use the same logic if your main movie VOBs are in a different numbered VTS set. Click "Open" to choose the file. Click Update to update the original IFO file. If everything was done correctly, MakeItEasy will inform you that it has successfully updated the IFO file. Now Close MakeItEasy. Open up the destination directory that was used with DVD2One. Mine is C:\Temp\Movies\The Bourne Identity\vts01dest. This next step is split into two sections: A and B. Do A or B depending on the original VTS name of your movie VOB files. Do not do both A and B. A: If your original movie VOB files are in the VTS_01 set, you simply have to move all of the VOB files from the destination directory to the original directory. Do not move any of the IFO or BUP files. Once the files are moved, go to step 5 of MakeItEasy, browse to the original directory, select the VTS_01_0.IFO file and click “Update”. MakeItEasy will inform you that the VTS has updated ok. B: If your original movie VOB files are in a VTS set other then VTS_01 such as VTS_02 or VTS_03, you simply have to rename all the VOB files in the destination directory from VTS_01_1.VOB TO VTS_02_1.VOB or whatever the VTS set it is suppose to be in. Do not rename the VTS_01_0.IFO files or any other files besides all the VOB files. Once you have renamed the VOBs, move all of the VOB files from the destination directory to the original directory. Do not move any of the IFO or BUP files. Follow the pictures in step A if you don't understand what I mean by moving the VOB files from the destination directory to the original directory. Once the files are moved, go to step 5 of MakeItEasy, browse to the original directory, select the VTS_0x_0.IFO file that you are working on and click “Update”. VTS_0x.IFO pertains to the VTS set that you have been using DVD2One and MakeItEasy to shrink. If the set that you are currently working on is VTS_02 then select VTS_02_0.IFO. MakeItEasy will inform you that the VTS has updated ok. Read carefully the next section. This next section is also split into two: A and B. A is for DVDs that are smaller and there is not much else to do except burn the DVD. B is for large DVDs that require to you to pad and transcode an extra VTS xtra set to shrink the total size down even further for everything to fit onto a single DVD5. A: Verify the total size of the original directory. If the total size of the original directory is greater then 4.38 Gigabytes or 4380 Megabytes, proceed to step B and do not continue with step A any further. If it is less then 4380 Megabytes then create two new folders: AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS. Move everything inside the original directory into the VIDEO_TS folder. Skip step B and proceed to the Create An Image File section. B: Verify the total size of the original directory. If the total size of the original directory is greater then 4.38 Gigabytes or 4380 Megabytes, you will need to pad the next largest VTS set and do the entire process again from the first step except this time, don't do it on the main movie VOB files, instead do it on the next largest set of VOB files. In my case, after moving the newly created VOB files to my original directory, I find that my total directory size was roughly 4.539 Gigabytes which is 4539 Megabytes. This is out of DVD5 size specs. This means that I will have to somehow get rid of 159 Megabytes from the total size of the original directory. To reduce the original directory down even more, select your next largest VTS set VOB files. Mine happened to be VTS_04_1.VOB, which is 689 Megabytes. When you locate your next largest set of VTS VOB files, follow all the steps mentioned above again starting with the Padding section and do everything that was done to the main movie VOB files to this set of VOB files. The most important thing to remember is to renumber the VOB sets after you have ran IFOEdit for the first time on this new set of VTS VOB files as you have so for the main movie. Also, remember to renumber the new VOB files that DVD2One created back to its original VTS Set prior to moving the VOB files to the original directory. For my movie, since I only needed 159 Megabytes, the number I entered into MakeItEasy for padding was about 5000 from what I recalled. At the end this gave me a new VTS_04_1.VOB file size of 450 Megabytes, well beyond what I needed. When you have completed everything for the second set of VOB files, continue to the next step. Create An Image File: Always create an image file to retain the structure movie files. Else, you might run into compatibility problems with different standalone home DVD players. Create an image file using WinIso or Nero. In this method, I will use Nero since I find that WinIso sometimes crashes on me when a file gets larger then 4 Gigabytes. Open Nero, click on the "Choose Recorder" Icon. The "Chooses a recorder" window will pop up and display your DVD drives including the "Image Recorder." Select "Image Recorder" and click "Ok" to close the window. Click "File," "New," to open a new DVD Compilation. Within the "New Compilation" window, make sure "DVD" is selected on the top left hand corner. On the left side of the scroll bar, move to the very bottom and select "DVD-ROM (UDF/ISO)" then click "New" to open the "UDFISO1_DVD and "File Browser" window. Using the "File Browser" window, locate the directory where you created the AUDIO_TS AND VIDEO_TS folders for your movie. Highlight those folders and drag them into UDFISO1_DVD window. On the top left of the UDFISO1_DVD window you will see a DVD disc picture, next to the picture if you left mouse click once, you will be able to change the DVD name. Once done, click on the "Opens the Write-CD-Dialog" button to proceed to the "Write DVD" window. At the "Write DVD" window, click on the "Write" button. A new window will appear asking you where you would like to save your image. Save it where you like. Mine is in C:\Temp\Movies\The Bourne Identity\Ori. Once the Image making process is complete, click "Ok" and then click "Discard" to close the completion windows. At the main Nero window, click on the "Chooses a recorder" button again. This time, select your DVD drive instead of the Image Recorder and click "Ok" to close the window. Click on "File" select "Burn Image." At the "Open" window, locate the image file that you have created and click "Open." The "Write DVD" window will appear. uncheck "Determine maximum speed" and "Simulation." Select your "Write Speed" and click on "Write." Once done, you should now have a complete backup of your originally DVD. Brought to you by: BigBlack and DaRipper. |

| First of all... 6.742GB does not equal 6742 Megabytes (unless you are a HDD manufacturer hehehe ).Multiply by 1024, not 1000! 6.742GB = 6903.8 Megabytes. It is simple with new DVD2One 1.02: DestDVDrSize = 4.3GB static = the content on the SrcDVD that we are not going to transcode or modify like menus or extras that we will leave exactly like it is. (DestDVDRSize - static) x 1024 In above example, (4.3GB - 1.14GB ) x 1024 = 3235MB. 3235MB is the value you would put into DVD2One. I suggest knocking off a few more MB, like say make it 3200MB, to account for unforseeable overhead (although DVD2One is so fast you could easily transcode again smaller if the actual result is > 3.16GB). If there is more than one VTS then it is slightly more complex to figure out how much to transcode each VTS to. Here is a simple formula for figuring out how much to compress with DVD2One 1.0.1 or 1.0.2 when dealing with multiple VTS: Transcode multiplier = (DestDVDrSize - static) / (SrcDVDSize - static). Example: DestDVDrSize = 4.3GB SrcDVDSize = 6.75GB static = 1.14GB (4.3GB - 1.14GB) / (6.75GB - 1.14GB) or... 3.16/5.61 = 0.56 5.61 x 0.56 x 1024 = 3217MB But this is sort of silly and could have got same result with first formula (4.3 -1.14) x 1024 (well not exactly because this is due to slight rounding error and is acceptable)! But this multiplier is useful when there is more than one VTS. Using same DVDsrc size, let's say ithat one VTS is 3GB and another VTS is 2.61GB, therefore: 3 x .56 x 1024 = 1720MB 2.61 x 0.56 x 1024 = 1496MB Note that I am always rounding down. The other tools needed are IFOUpdate. I don't feel like explaining this here as it is explained. Maybe soon I will make a good tutorial. |

| I'm trying it right now... I am now trying to use this guide to back up Band of Brothers Disc1. Did everthing seemed to playback fine with power DVD using Hard-Disc mode. Burning now on dvd-rw with copytodvd. I didn't use MakeitEasy for padding (why bother we have a choise of the destenation size... in 1.01/1.02). just use it to update the IFO's. Will report tommarow If it was burned and playback ok. (This is a full backup including Menu and chapter selection, excluding French sound and all subs execpt 2). |

Those are rough numbers and not exact. But, from what I've been seeing, using exactly 1024 to = 1 Mb or 1000 to = 1 Mb doesn't hurt or hinder the end result. |
